As usual, Eagles’ Reid makes right choice
PHILADELPHIA HEAD COACH
SELECTED DONOVAN McNABB
OVER (AGHH!!) AKILI SMITH
SMITH SET BENGALS FRANCHISE
BACK MANY YEARS WITH HIS
INABILITY TO PLAY QUARTERBACK
Way back in the 1999 NFL Draft, the reborn Cleveland Browns needed a quarterback to lead their expansion franchise. The Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals wanted quarterbacks, too.
Tim Couch of Kentucky went to Cleveland at No. 1.
Donovan McNabb of Syracuse went to Philadelphia at No. 2.
Akili Smith of Oregon went to Cincinnati at No. 3.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid knew exactly what he was doing. He got the smartest, toughest, most athletic QB in the draft — McNabb.
Couch lasted five seasons (1999-2003), throwing for 11,131 yards, 64 TDs, 67 INTs and a passer rating of 75.1.
Smith lasted four seasons (1999-2002), passing for 2,212 yards, 5 TD, 13 INTs and a passer rating of 52.8.
McNabb is still playing for the Eagles.
Fast forward to 2008.
The Bengals select WR Jerome Simpson (Coastal Carolina) No. 46 overall in the second round. He has one catch for 2 yards.
Three picks later, the Eagles select WR DeSean Jackson (California) No. 49 overall in the second round. He has 38 catches for 586 yards (15.4) and one TD.
Andy Reid whooped ‘em again.

Well, you get what you pay for so with the league’s smallest scouting staff, what do you expect? Business as usual.By GURU

Chick, keep hammering on this bring it out in the open openly question and try to embarrass Mike Brown on all of these blunders from this one to Chris Perry to Jerome Simpson these are the perfect examples of why this franchise is a loser the ineptitude of the ownership and management they can’t judge talent and take way too many risks while turning their noses up at rewards (The saints Trade iffer for slot 3)By fredtoast

If Reid is such a draft genius then why did he pass up Chad Johnson in 2001 in order to take WR Freddie Mitchell (5 career tds)in the first round. Besides it is WAY too early to judge the rookie WRs NFL value. If you look at the 5 WRs with the most catches in the league last year (Housh, Welker, Wayne, Mason, and Marshall) they averaged 16 receptions in their rookie seasons. Over the course of his career Simpson will be better than Jackson.By Brian

With all due respect to DeSean Jackson, the guy the Bengals passed on to REACH for Simpson that just about resulted in my hurling a brick through Mel Kiper’s televised mug was Trevor Laws, the defensive tackle out of Notre Dame, taken by the Eagles a pick later (and currently getting significant playing time). It still pains me to think the Bengals could have gotten Laws AND Pat Sims a round later and solidified their defensive line for the foreseeable future.By HA
