Benson shows why team wants him back

FAST, STRONG AND SMOOTH,

BENSON DESERVES NEW DEAL

Cincinnati Bengals tailback Cedric Benson called the victory over the Washington Redskins a sign of things to come in 2009.

“We don’t have any playoff hopes,” he said, “so you’re working to propel us into next season. We’ve shown so many good signs at times. It’s kind of a sneak peek at what we can be.”

Benson, operating on a one-year contract, showed why the club wants him back next season.

He put his versatility on display, rolling up 161 all-purpose yards (73 rushing, 88 receiving), including a 79-yard screen pass from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in which he followed his blockers, darted through traffic and accelerated down the sideline.

Benson runs with passion, showing excellent vision and contact balance on runs between the tackles as he plows through the line of scrimmage.

He has the ability to make the first defender miss with shifty, powerful moves.

He breaks arm tackles, has quick acceleration and finishes his runs with a good body lean that keeps his momentum going forward as he fights for extra yards after first contact.

Elsewhere, WLB Brandon Johnson was injured at 10:32 of the fourth quarter when he suffered a blow to the head, but he returned to the game and tied FS Chris Crocker for team-high honors with 10 tackles.

Chickster, does CB want to stay here? Seems he has not had any recent problems w/alcohol. Perhaps he has conquered that issue.

So what do Dahane Jones, Chris Crocker, and Cedric Benson have in common? They all were not good enough to play for their previous teams, yet they are stars on this Bengals team!

Weird… but I’ll take it. That certainly was an odd win; especially that surrealistic sequence in the third quarter. It started with second and goal from the three when the Bengals stuffed Portis for a one-yard loss. But wait, there is a yellow flag – defensive holding… on a TACKLE? How often is defensive holding called on a defensive tackle? Was Shirley is pass protection? Now it’s first and goal from the two yard line. After an incomplete, the Redskins’ Sellers pounds the middle and a touchdown is called. Now a red flag — Lewis challenges. The replay is clear; runner down before the ball breaks the plane. For a change, the officials rule for the Bengals. Third and goal at the one; and Washington runs a nearly identical play. Sellers jumps, Jeanty meets him in midair, Herbert grabs shirt and Mays grabs ball as Sellers reaches toward the plane. The Bengals have come up with a monster play… but wait, another red flag flies. Did Sellers reach the ball through the plane before Mays swiped it? Bengaldom held its collective breath as the replay official walks on the field. Is it another typical day in PBS-hell? NO – the Bengals get two official calls their way in two consecutive plays that included great efforts by the defense. Folks – they just used up all the luck and answered prayers allotted to the team for the season.

Maybe it takes guys like Cedric Benson, Chris Crocker, and Dhani Jones to get the point across to some of the paycheck-players and underachieving stiffs that the NFL really does stand for “Not For Long.” Benson, Crocker, and Jones are literally playing for their NFL lives. On the other hand when you keep guys around who don’t want to be there, like Justin Smith (last year), Chad, and Stacy Andrews it just brings down everyone around them. Mike Brown will never wrap his mind around that, but then again he’s not exactly concerned with running an organization that players would WANT to play for unless they’re out of options, like Benson, Crocker, and Jones…
