Bengals not first to ‘franchise’ a kicker (plus my 2011 Strike Replacement Team)

The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t the first NFL team to franchise tag a kicker, and they won’t be the last.

Even though it’s rare, it happens. Why? Because it’s the cheapest of all positions to retain.

Seahawks used franchise tag on kicker Josh Brown in 2007

Patriots franchise-tagged kicker Adam Vinatieri in 2002 and 2005,

SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY …

When Shayne Graham was a restricted free agent in March 2004.

Did the Bengals make the right move by designating placekicker Shayne Graham as their franchise player?

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Graham to a five-year, $6.5 million offer sheet, with $2 million of the $3 million guaranteed.

Because he was restricted, the Bengals had the right to match.

As soon as the Jaguars’ offer sheet spit out of the Bengals’ fax machine, the Bengals decided to match it.

Graham made $1.3 million in 2008. He’ll make $2.483 million in 2009.

Not bad for a guy who was signed off the street in 2003, and earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2005.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

From quarterback Carson Palmer’s $14 million to guard Nate Livings’ $295,000, the Cincinnati Bengals spent $109.851 million in player salaries in 2008.

And while current NFL players make tons and tons and tons of cash, many of the men who built the game are hurting, even starving.

STRIKE, LOCKOUT COMING

TO THE NFL IN 2011?

Anybody up for a lockout and strike in 2011?

I sure am.

I’ve had a long list of names in the lap drawer of my desk in the Miamisburg War Room for a while now, and it’s time to dust it off and update it.

Why am I doing this?

Hey, I’m just getting prepared in case there’s a work stoppage in 2011.

Some facts, before we get going:

• NFL owners voted unanimously on May 20, 2008, to opt out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement they extended in 2006 because they’re upset that players receive 59 percent of total NFL revenues.

• The league will play uninterrupted through 2010. The 2008 and 2009 seasons will be played with a salary cap. However, if there is no new agreement before the 2010 season, that season will be played without a salary cap and free agency rights of players will be limited.

• The CBA will expire at the end of the 2010 league year if an extension isn’t agreed upon by owners and the players union. If that happens, look for the owners to lock out the players, and for the players to go on strike.

Franchising Shayne Graham doesn’t irk me as much as most. I don’t sense the same level of “I DON’T WANT TO BE HERE, SO I WON’T NEGOTIATE WITH YOU” as with previous franchisees Justin Smith and Stacy Andrews. Graham, when healthy, is one of the better kickers in the league and they were almost certain to lose him without the tag. If their defense continues to improve a reliable kicker will be key to any success they’ll have, because their offense will be just shy of putrid barring a miracle.

I think it was a move that had to be made. If TJ does not want to be here than take the train baby!
