Sporting News prediction: Bengals grab DE and C in top two rounds of 2009 NFL Draft

FSU DE EVERETTE BROWN,

CAL CENTER ALEX MACK

PROJECTED AS TOP TWO

PICKS FOR THE BENGALS

With the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select …

… Florida State defensive end Everette Brown.

And in the second round, at No. 38 overall, the Cincinnati Bengals select …

… California center Alex Mack.

That’s the latest from the Sporting News’ draft expert Russ Lande.

http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/draft/mock_draft

My question is: Can Bengals fans live with that?

Everette Brown

Yes, the Bengals desperately need an edge rusher who can put pressure on the quarterback, and a center who can anchor at the point of attack against the rugged defensive tackles in the AFC North Division.

But what about offensive tackle?

Can the Bengals trust Levi Jones and Anthony Collins to protect quarterback Carson Palmer’s blind side?

Lande’s analysis on Everette Brown: “NFL comparison: DeMarcus Ware, Cowboys. Brown reminds us of Ware when he came out of college because he flashes special pass-rushing ability, but he struggles with inconsistent production.”

Lande’s analysis on Alex Mack: “NFL comparison: Nick Mangold, Jets. Mack is a thick-bodied, athletic center who plays with the same passion, intensity and aggressiveness that have helped Mangold become so good early in his career.”

Chick Ludwig’s take: “The last time the Bengals selected a Florida State defensive end in the first round was 1997 when they picked Reinard Wilson (14th), who became a classic bust. The Bengals should’ve drafted Mangold in 2006. But they selected CB Johnathan Joseph at No. 24, while Mangold went to the Jets at No. 29.”

I would hate to think Bengals go DE after signing Tank. I would think the emphasis will be OT in either Monroe, Oher, Jason or Andre Smith. If Alex Mack falls to the Bengals in the 2nd round that will be a coup!

OT the first round, Center the second. If the Bengal’s don’t improve the offensive line, their season will end as soon as Palmer goes down. If they trade Chad, their season won’t start. It’s asking an awful lot to have two new linemen and two new wide receivers take you to the the playoffs. It won’t happen and I can devote my attention to my other team, the Dolphins.

The Fort Myers Foursome makes a lot of sense. How cool would it be to see the Bengals and Dolphins square off for the AFC Championship? Very. Hey, I like dreamin’.

Jeremy Maclin in the second round? Did I miss something? Did they just forget about him?

I agree with FMF. The OT and OL need to protect CP or the season is over for the Bengals. Bengaldom won’t matter how good the defense is if Palmer is unable to play. CP ought to insist on an OL that will cover his back. Maybe we should do as FMF does and look for an alternate team in case the Bengals don’t protect CP.

Andre Smith at 17? Jeremy Maclin and Aaron Maybin in the 2nd round. Just a few examples of some laughable predictions in this trend. I wouldn’t put much stock into this mock draft. I expect better from the Sporting News.

Can’t see Mikey dropping huge coin on another defensive end considering all the money tied up in Geathers and Odom. The clock is ticking on Carson’s prime…

Mack would be a great 2nd round pick but I doubt he’s still available. Look, address the OL. It’s so stinkin’ simple plus makes a ton of sense so naturally, the Bengals will take a different approach.

I agree with Brian - no way Brown is going to want to tie up that much dough in one position group. They very well need to go o-line early and often this year .

Drafting Brown with the sixth pick when you can trade down about fifteen spots and still get him would rank as the worst move ever by the Bengals.

They have to take Monroe or A Smith to protect Carson’s blind side, moving Collins to RT. Mack or Wood on round 2.

Chick, you are one of my favorite columnists, but someone needs to take you out behind the woodshed for this. (kidding) With Zach Thomas signing with Kansas City, Curry could be falling in the draft. Do you really think that the Bengals would take him over any of the big OTs or Rey Mauluga? Dhani Jones would rather be a bumbling tv star instead of a team leader. We need a monster in the middle.

The Bengals need to take the best player available at 6, barring it is a QB. I would like to see us take Michael Crabtree if he is there.

It does no good to select a OT just because we need one. We could be looking at the third OT off the board at the 6 pick. I am not convinced that is good valuee at that pick. I would rather pick Crabtree, the best player in the draft, and then package some picks and move back up to the OT out of Ole Miss. We have a ton of picks so let’s get the best player available at 6, move back up to get the OT, and then get our C. Everything outside of that is a bonus.

A lot has been said about A.Smith and his body type.Maybe if we look at W Anderson,B Williams,A Whitworth and R Braham. All of these men are not body builder typse.A Smith is going to be a very good playdplayer for a long time

Admit it “Kevin,” you’re REALLY Mike Brown, because only Mikey could justify drafting a wide receiver (or running back…) with the #6 pick even though your team’s franchise QB is operating behind the worst line since the glory days of Rod Jones and Melvin Tuten.

I dont think the Bengals should pay all that money for a high draft pick when they hardly ever play to their potential. An old Bengal fan

Good point Brian, don’t take the best player on the board, who might be the next Larry Fitzgerald. Take the guy who is rated the third best at his position with the 6th overall pick. You would rather have the third best tackle than the first and argueably best player in the draft. You sound like Mike Brown. I am not sure what makes you think that a guy drafted third best at his postion would be able to start and help the team right away. How would Smith be better than Levi anyway? Picking a OT here, if it is not one of the top two OTs, is like picking Akili Smith all over again. Get Crabtree, probably the best player in the draft at 6. That is good value. The Bengals have so many picks and few roster spots that their all of their draft picks will not make the team. Package the picks and move up to get the best player available at 6, then based on that pick address OT, C, DE, etc. It is smart and well thought out so the Bengals won’t do it. That makes good sense.

I agree with Justin, no mock draft that has Jeremy Maclin going in the 2nd round has any credibility whatsoever. Maclin is projected to go as high as 7, as low as 15. The Sporting News might want to do a little more homework first.

Will the next Larry Fitzgerald (or Charles Rogers) be the Bengals Wildcat QB when Palmer is placed on injured reserve after the first game?

The No.six pick is going to be the very large man…..or someone no one has ever heard of before.

If Levi is healthy, which they say he is right now, how is Carson going to be in trouble? We are going to get a new C, Collins did a nice job at RT last year, even though he wasn’t the first pick. My point is a team cannot draft for need at the top. And Brian you still didn’t answer my question from earlier, how do you know that the OT picked at 6 will beat out Levi. Levi has been pretty good since he got here. What makes you think he is done? We might need someone to do something with ball, since there is no more TJ. Unless you are confident in Jerome(I can’t get get activated on a bad team) Simpson to make plays for us.) I am still waitngi to hear your logic on how this rookie OT picked at 6 is going to stop all of the problems we have up front and instantly make the Bengals a solid team on the O Line. team on tally bad team

WOW…is there really a need to debate drafting Crabtree? Great idea…we’ll just start the likes of James Blair and Justin Britt, and the go out and sign Plaxico Burress and pull a trade for Anquan Boldin, mix in Crabtree and everything will be solved, right? i’ll answer the question for Brian….Andre Smith isn’t gonna beat out Levi…cuz he’ll be the RT! He’s about 6’5” 345lbs…molded to be a mauling RT, not a quick-footed LT. (Anthony Collins will be the LT, Levi will be cut.) Had Andre Smith’s Combine antics not gone down, we’d be talking about 3 OT’s going the in the Top 5 picks of the draft - Andre the Giant being the lead the candidate. Consider Andre the Giant the pick….you heard it here first…. Quoth Chickster - “…make love not war, give peace a chance, and strawberry fields forever…”

I’m down with Andre Smith at 6 also. His struggles, starting with the bowl suspension, have been mostly the result of youth and an idiot for an agent- who he’s since dropped. This guy will be our RT for years to come and be the primary factor in Cedric getting 1000yds this upcoming season. If it were me, I’d wait til the 3rd for a center and take Smith’s Bama teammate, Antoine Caldwell. Of all the vaunted centers coming out this year, Caldwell was the All American and facing 380lb. Terrence Cody everyday in practice ought to leave him best prepared to handle the Shaun Rogers and Haloti Ngatas of this division. Plus, he and Smith already know how to work with each other. In the second, I’d grab Connor Barwin and use him as a tight end and rush end until he mastered the OLB position.

It will not happen but they should draft Aaron Curry if he slips to #6. Then trade up to draft Michael Oher. Then pray that a good center lasts until round 3.
