DE Johnson a third-round steal for Bengals
Talk about a third-round steal, the Cincinnati Bengals cashed in when they selected Georgia Tech defensive end Michael Johnson with the 70th overall pick.
At 6-foot-7 and 266 pounds, Johnson has first-round talent.
But he slipped to the third round because of his inconsistency and the fact that he didn’t play hard on every down.
But make no mistake about it, this dude can rush the quarterback. That’s why he’s here — to shore up an obvious area of weakness, and that’s sacking the quarterback.
Johnson is an exceptional athlete with long arms, good strength, nice agility, tremendous quickness, fine body control and explosive pass-rush moves.
He forced six fumbles the past two years and has the tools to stop the run.
Head coach Marvin Lewis must light a fire under Johnson in order for his talent and potential to be maximized.
Johnson is the perfect size to be a defensive end in the 4-3 defense, and he’ll push both Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom.
The Bengals will let him rush the QB on third down, but they want to groom him so he can expand his game and eventually become an every-down player.
