A Bengals delicacy known as snot bubbles

Watching Chris Pressley and Fui Vakapuna bust through the line of scrimmage like wrecking balls, I’m reminded of a scripture reading from the gospel according to Jim Anderson.

“Jimmy A,” the longtime Bengals running backs coach, said it when Nick Williams was drafted in 1999, and repeated it when Jeremi Johnson was drafted in 2003.

“I want to see snot bubbles when they hit people,” Anderson said.

Well, folks, I’m seeing snot bubbles from both of these guys.

Pressley is 5-11 and 257 pounds. He wears uniform No. 36.

Vakapuna is 5-11 and 244 pounds. He wears uniform No. 37.

Both are kicking, fighting, scratching and clawing for a position on the Bengals’ 53-man roster.

“I run north and south,” Vakapuna said. No fancy moves. Just a sledgehammer.

Same goes for Pressley, who shook the earth at Camp Randall Stadium when he rumbled for the Wisconsin Badgers.

“Being a thumper, man, you’ve got to go out there and know that’s your job to open up the holes for the running back behind you,” Pressley said. “They’re counting on you.

“This is an opportunity. You can’t just be hungry. You’ve got to be starving.”
