Rookie TB Bernard Scott signs; 4 others ‘knifed’ (Expect an Andre Smith holdout)

IN ROSTER-TRIMMING MOVE;

LONG HOLDOUT EXPECTED

FOR ROOKIE LT ANDRE SMITH

===LUDWIG AT LARGE alert: Coming Sunday is my updated two-deep depth chart (unofficial, of course).===

On the drive back to Dayton from Bengals minicamp on Saturday, my cell phone rings.

Jack Brennan, Bengals director of public relations, is on the line with the latest news.

Beat writers were warned that cuts were coming, and the guillotine dropped swiftly at Paul Brown Stadium.

Andre Smith: You won’t be getting his autograph at Georgetown College

Rookie tailback Bernard Scott is officially in the fold, signing a four-year contract. And four others feel the knife, get the pink slip and pile on the NFL’s waiver wire.

Gone are WR Mario Urrutia, TE Matt Sherry, QB Billy Farris and long-snapper James Smith.

That leaves 81 players on the roster. The club can take 80 to training camp.

Yoy know what that means …

The Bengals anticipate a long and arguably agonizing holdout from first-round draft pick Andre Smith.

Defensive end Justin Smith held out 50 days in 2001.

Outside linebacker David Pollack missed all of training camp in 2005.

If Andre Smith surfaces at Georgetown College, it’ll be an absolute shock.

Anthony Collins and Dennis Roland will hunker down and share snaps at right offensive tackle in Smith’s absence.

Here’s the club’s news release …

BENGALS SIGN HB BERNARD SCOTT

The Bengals today signed HB Bernard Scott of Abilene Christian University, one of the team’s sixth-round choices in the 2009 draft.

Scott was the winner of the 2008 Harlon Hill Award - the NCAA Division II “Heisman” - after rushing for 2156 yards. It was his second consecutive season of more than 2000 rushing yards. He scored 73 touchdowns in his two seasons at ACU.

Scott is the third of Cincinnati’s 11 draft choices to sign, joining CB Morgan Trent of Michigan (sixth round) and WR Freddie Brown of Utah (seventh round).

FOUR PLAYERS WAIVED

The Bengals today waived the following four players:

• TE Matt Sherry, a second-year player from Villanova. Sherry was a sixth-round Bengals draft choice in 2008 and spent the ’08 season on the Reserve/Injured list, due to a preseason shoulder injury.

• WR Mario Urrutia, a first-year player from Louisville. Urrutia was a seventh-round Cincinnati choice in the ’08 draft and spent last season on the Bengals practice squad.

• QB Billy Farris of Colorado State and LS James Smith of Florida, both rookies. Both players joined the Bengals as college free agents, following last April’s draft.

Let Collins and Roland fight for first string…If Andre holds out - let him sit. Tired of these kids that think they are due crazy money. Did Willie hold out??

This could work out for the best. With Whitworth at LT, I would like to see Collins, Roland and Livings all get plenty of snaps. Once Smith signs he will be there and this could prove an opportunity to simply improve the depth of the line. The only thing I worry about is a hold-outs becoming overly toxic to Smith’s relationship with the organization and development. That seems to happen a lot with hold-outs.

As I have said in the past, this team has already started to implode. 7-9 at best and maybe, just maybe will finish third in the AFC north. Look for the 6 time World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers to claim yet another championship.

Yup. Here comes the obligatory Bengal 1st round soap opera. This is why Marvin announced Whitworth is his LT, so Collins can go to RT when Andre the Hut spends his idle time at IHOP & Fatburger.
