Fogg coming to Reds?

When Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker and general manager Wayne Krivsky say the hunt continues for starting pitchers, they apparently mean it.

Free agent pitcher Josh Fogg told friends in Denver that he has agreed to a one-year $1 million contract with the Reds.

Both Baker and Krivsky were attending a team party Wednesday night and were not available, but it is known that the Reds have been trying to land the righthanded starting pitcher.

Fogg was 10-9 with a 4.38 earned run average in 29 starts last season for the National League champion Colorado Rockies. It has been reported that the Rockies were prepared to offer Fogg a one-year $5 million contract, but Fogg and his agent believed they could land a multi-year contract.

But that didn’t happen and with timing running out and teams forming their squads at spring training, Fogg decided it was time to act and said he has agreed to sign the one-year deal with the Reds.

Most likely he must pass a physical before the Reds announce the signing.

Fogg is the second pitcher from Colorado’s staff who is a free agent to sign with the Reds. Earlier this month the Reds signed lefthander Jeremy Affeldt.

Affeldt was a relief specialist with the Rockies last year and the Reds had hopes of converting him back to a starting pitcher, which he was early in his career. But with Fogg, the Reds could strengthen their bullpen by placing Affeldt in it.

David Weathers wisely said todays players [and fans] are too caught up in stats when wins and losses are key. Fogg is a pitcher that knows how to win - he is the anti-Lohse and an ERA that hovers around 5 is meaningless to me is he pulls down 10 wins for the Reds next year at the back end of the rotation.

Fogg should be a good addition for the Reds due to the fact that he only has a 1 year deal and needs to pitch well to land that multi-year.

Fogg will at least provide insurance. My hope is that at least 2 of the youngters (Bailey, Cueto,Volquez, Maloney)will push Fogg and Belisle to perform consistently or to make way for them

Why are the Reds so darn secretive about player moves etc.? It’s a joke? If Fogg is telling friends about it. Then, come out with it!

This signing is an absolute joke. The guy has a lifetime ERA of 4.90 and gives up a TON of hits. Any one of the guys competing for the rotation this year could and will put up better numbers. It’s a waste of money, time, roster space, and developmental time for the kids. Totally ridiculous.

I like this, the one year deal gives Fogg incentive to perform and land a longer deal.

This is insurance. You need at least 8 starters going into Opening Day because inevitably, a couple are injured and not ready, one or two could be in the minors getting regular starts and be recalled when ready or needed. Way too many scenarios can and will occur that justifies the need to have another starter that can go out there on a regualr basis. One thing Fogg has going for him is he has “pitched to win” throughout his career and has as good a record as Ben Sheets. For whatever reason, Sheets doesn’t get the Offense, but Fogg gets the offense when he pitches in Pittsburgh or Colorado. Maybe his style keeps the offense loose and in the game.

WHIP of 1.5 + ERA of 4.9 = waste of time and money that could be spent giving the most qualified of our young studs some experience-building starts. Edinson Volquez could likely put up the same numbers as Foog WITHOUT further improvement. I don’t understand this move.

This is a good more at a good price for the Reds. A good solid number 3 pitcher. It is too much to ask to fill out your rotation with two or three rookies pitchers and expect to do anything this season. This move gives the Reds some options.

Is this really better than going with one of the young pitchers? I do agree with Sean that we shouldn’t sell the farm for Blanton though. But let’s play the cards that have been dealt before picking up any questionable ones like Fogg.

What worries me about this situation is Fogg’s ability to keep his ERA down in GABP… he’s a fly ball pitcher.

Regardless of what the naysayers say this would be a solid move. The Reds need another established started. People can cry about Blanton but I would much rather have a servicable stop gap pitcher like Fogg than sell the farm for Blanton. SOLID MOVE.

This will give the Reds a guy who will give 30+ starts and take some pressure off the young prospects and allow them to develop into the season. Maybe one of the young guys will step up like a Jensen Lewis from the Tribe or the young guy from Boston and give the Reds a chance to compete after the All-Star break for a change.
