Bailey optioned to Louisville
As expected, the ax fell on Homer Bailey Wednesday.
The Cincinnati Reds optioned Bailey to Class AAA Louisville, with instructions to find the strike zone and work on his off-speed pitches.
Bailey, 21, the team’s No. 1 draft pick in 2004, was expected to be part of the rotation this year - his job to lose - and he lost it.
In six appearances over 19 innings, Bailey was 1-3 with a 5.21 ERA. He walked 16, struck out 11 and gave up 24 hits. His major problem was his inability to throw strikes, which lifted his pitch count.
Bailey’s demotion leaves six candidates for five rotation spots - Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, Josh Fogg, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez and Matt Belisle. With Belisle missing time with a tender arm, he probably is the odd man out for now.
As manager Dusty Baker said, “Bailey will be back at some point this year. You never go through an entire season without needing additional starters. He just needs to take a good attitude to Louisville and get his command together. He has the stuff.”
Is it the right move?

Did they demote his ego too?

Since when does a minor league pithcers shake off pitch selections from veteran catchers. Another reason to go back to AAA. I love Bailey, but he is very stubborn. Not always a bad trait though. But not this early!

Maybe the Reds ought to hire Kevin Costner to come in and catch Homer for a while. Look what Kevin did for Tim Robbins in “Bull Durham” !!!

Indians fans had this same discussion a few years ago about one of their top prospects - a can’t miss 2nd baseman who had a ton of potential but never caught on at the major league level. They moved him back and forth between the minors and majors, then finally gave up and sent him to another team. That player? Brandon Phillips. I think you all know how that turned out. Bailey might turn out to be a great pitcher, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s with another team.

It’s the right move. He needs to understand why he’s being sent down and take the right attitude about it. No more whining that he started against the toughest teams (NYY & Boston) and the other starters didn’t. The strike zone is the same either way, and any big league hitter can hit a fastball. So he needs to be able to throw offspeed pitches for strikes - and keep the ball down. He seems to live high in the strike zone. It scares me to watch him throw waist high pitches just asking to be smashed into the gaps.

That was absolutely the right move. I said last year Johnny Cueto would be having us say “Homer Who”????

Good move. Bailey is 21 years old—an age where many think they know it all—and then hit up against the reality that maybe they have something to learn—and stubbornly deny it. As a baseball player he has all the tools needed to succeed. He just needs to grow up a bit.

As the man said, it was Homer’s job to lose. He did just that. If he was ready and had the right stuff, he’d be on the squad. He’s obviously not and didn’t. Sadly, he’s beginning to sound like the latest pitcher the Reds organization may have ruined. I hope not and like Scott, I sure hope I’m wrong on this one.

Homer is a marginal MLB pitcher at this stage. I have seen him throw and have generally come away unimpressed. He belongs in AAA until he can find the strike zone and improve his attitude. All the hype the last couple of years CLEARLY went to his head. The Reds are better off w/o him for now.

Good move, Homer will be back mid-season to give the Reds it’s second wind.

Bailey has nothing left to prove in the minors. I’d rather watch a bad Homer Bailey gain big league experience, than watch a bad Josh Fogg just be plain bad.

It was easily the right move ot make. However, one of the most encouraging aspects of this year’s spring training has been Dusty’s comments about Homer’s willingness to accept coaching.

Yes, I think it was the right move. He was all over the place in his last outing. Louisville is a good place for him.

It was the only move to make, in my opinion. I have to say, I’m a little worried about Homer long-term. It appears that he may have the stuff to blow away minor leaguers, but not big leaguers. Hopefully I’m wrong.

What’s the latest on the Stanton for Wes Helms deal? This possible deal was also mentioned on the mlbtraderumors.com website (along with a Helms for Steve Kline rumor, the Giants LHP). Seems like a nice move by the Reds to get out from under Stanton’s contract, while adding a nice RH bat off the bench.

Yes, let him fine tune his command, lower his pitch count, and be mentally ready when he is summoned back to Cinci probably before the all star break.
