Jocketty replaces Krivsky
The Wayne Krivsky Era as general manager of the Cincinnati Reds is over and the Walt Jocketty era has begun.
The Reds confirmed this morning that Krivsky has been relieved of his duties and has been replaced by Jocketty. A media conference is scheduled this afternoon at 4 o’clock in Great American Ball Park before thee game with the Houston Astros.
Although Krivsky’s contract doesn’t run out until the end of the season, CEO Bob Castellini is unhappy with the team’s sluggish start.
It was almost a foregone conclusion that Jocketty would succeed Krivsky, but most thought it wouldn’t happen until after the season, if the Reds didn’t shed their seven years of losing.
Jocketty and Castellini worked together in St. Louis when Jocketty was GM of the Cardinals and Castellini was a minority owner.
When Jocketty left the Cardinals after last season, Castellini hired him as a special advisor in January and the handwriting was splattered all over the clubhouse walls.
There was a hint of something to come on the team’s last trip to Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Chicago when Jocketty was on the trip and Krivsky wasn’t.

You go girl! Ah yes, money. Money— in Cincy sports teams. Remember, when one of the top three NBA players of all time wasn’t surrounded by a good team—and Oscar Robertson never won a title with the Royals? Same old story in Cincy and will be forever—Basketball,Football,Baseball— GREAT athletes here—are lonely!

You can make all the moves you want but if this team does not hit the ball consistently, they’ll be done by June

For those of you who don’t think Bailey is ready what more do you think he needs to do at AAA? His career AAA stats are as follows: 9-4, 2.50 ERA, .204 opponents BA, 1.11 WHIP, 75K / 36BB, 93.2 IP. Can you possibly tell me that you think Belisle or Fogg or Shearn or whoever else give the Reds a better chance to win games as a starter? A quick review of Bailey’s 9 starts last year for the Reds show that the Reds went 5-4. Bailey had 4 wins with a 3.13 ERA in those games. He had 3 no decisions with a respectable 4.44 ERA in those games. It was in his 2 losses that he got blown up and had his ERA shredded with a 21.94 ERA in those 2 losses. I contend that his growth is being stunted at AAA and that it is time for him to learn how to pitch at the major league level. The lumps taken in Texas by Volquez don’t seem to have crippled his psyche now do they?

Jack…Baily is not ready to come up. He will be….but not right now. You don’t want to see Belisle continue to struggle, but you want to have our Top Pitching prospect stuggle? That doensn’t make sense! Patience my friend……patience

Krivsky did a good job. He got rid of a lot of dead weight. PJ, last time I checked, Kearns and Lopez were not exactly tearing up the league. We got Daryl Thompson in the deal, who is going to be great. I just hope jocketty doesn’t go off and trade our young pitching.

PJ - Yea, Kearns and Lopez are TEARING it up right now aren’t they? Go ahead and put Kearns and Lopez back on the team and you tell me where they play?

I also have problems with a guy who keeps putting his hopes in guys like belisle over and over again, and refuses to give guys like bailey a real chance. baily wasn’t perfect last year, but he sure wasn’t given much time to show what he can do.

I think the move was neccessary. You have a guy who got rid of Kearns and Lopez for two minor league pitchers. He is also the same guy who refused to give up a lazy A league batter in Adam Dunn for an ace in Bedard or that A’s guy. The hitting this years is horrible, you can’t just keep waiting on things to happen on their own.

I saw an earlier post lamenting the “win now” attitude. What is wrong with a winning (now) attitude. When was the last time the Reds won? It has been 18 years since they won the World Series. I can’t remember the last time they were in the playoffs. I like an owner that wants to win and will do what is reasonably necessary to win.

It was going to happen sooner or later so maybe this will put a bit of a charge (through fear) in a team where the bats have been sluggish for the most part. My one hope is that Mr. Jocketty doesn’t break up this fantastic looking core of young pitchers (Cueto, Volquez, Bailey, and Burton) as well as the young position players (Phillips, Votto, Keppinger, Encarnacion, and Bruce) that will be the base of a playoff team in years to come. I hope the playoffs arrives sooner rather than later and I hope that O’Brien and Krivisky are given a bit of credit for the part they played in getting this young core together. While this year may not look quite so bright to Reds fans, I can certainly see 2009 and beyond being a well deserved renaissance for this ball club. The major question for me is what does Mr. Jocketty do with Dunn and Griffey and when do Bruce and Bailey get to come up. It is time to let them learn on the job at the major league level. They have proved (even in this short a period of time) that they can handle the AAA level. So my advice to Mr. Jocketty — bring on the youth movement and don’t trade any of it away (like you did with Danny Haren).

Horrible move…..Wayne was doing a heckuva job and moving in the right direction with this ball club. Stanton, Casto, Cormier kind of hurt his resume…..but I guess Phillips, Kepp, and Hamilton couldn’t keep Wayne’s job

Castellini saw a problem and did something to fix it and quick! It is nice to see the Reds make a GOOD quick decision. Now let’s go win some ball games. GO REDS!!

I’m disheartened by the Steinbrenner “WIN NOW” mentality this organization is beginning to develop.

Say what you want, Krivsky was on a short leash once the Jocketty thing happened in the 1st place. Has to tell you that there was a contentious situation already with Bob C.

I don’t agree with this at all. Timing is terrible. And after all, is it really Krivsky’s fault they are off to a sluggish start? I blame the start on the inconsistancies of the offense and terrible starts by Fogg and Arroyo.

What took so long? The first mistake was hiring this boob. Hopefully this will cause a wave of vast improvement in the Reds organization. Bob C means business and seemingly will not tolerate incompetence. Let’s hope so. This is a great day for the Reds…parise the lord and pass the syrup!

I feel bad for Krivsky. Although the team is off to a rough start, this is the first time decades that the Reds have promising talent in the minors.

It was a good move. But there is the same players and how can that help for this season. That is upper management changes but, you still have the same machine with the same problems. You have to fix the machine not the person operating the machine.

When or how soon will Jocketty be in the starting lineup? As we all know its the GM who win games and not pitching. I would rather an Owner come out and say I would rather have this guy as GM then blame his firing on team performance. Thats weak. I hope it works out. GO REDS

Hal — do you have a sense of whether Jocketty has a different philosophy toward the youth vs. veterans question?

Firing Krivsky shows how entrenched this organization is with Dusty. Lets just call it the St. Louis conection coup. Good job Wayne, if not for you Phillips would never have been in Cincy. And that was only your biggest of several quality moves. Best of Luck!

They can replace GM’s until they are blue in the face but if some money isn’t put into getting better players and pitching they are never going to win.
