Janish a big hit — literally
Let’s talk mostly about good stuff because there usually isn’t much good stuff to talk about.
Let’s get this out of the way first. The negative baloney — the 6-0 lead the Reds had in the ninth inning Wednesday night before Mike Lincoln and Francisco Cordero gave up six runs, enabling the Marlins to tie it, the tying runs coming off Cordero on a three-run homer by Cody Ross (a member of the Reds for about 30 seconds two years ago).
It was Cordero’s first blown save this year. End of gloom, doom and sadness.
The Reds came back to win it, 7-6, with a heart-pounding finish. It was rookie Paul Janish, called up Tuesday night after Jeff Keppinger broke his kneecap, who ended the game with a single to right field, driving in pinch-runner Johnny Cueto (should the Reds be using valuable pitching beef to run the bases?).
What a story. Janish gets the game-winning hit in his second major-league at-bat. And a bloody nose from a teammate in the raucous celebration.
“I’ll take another bloody nose tomorrow if we can win it again,” said Janish, who came into the game in the eighth for defensive purposes and was the offensive star.
“It’s hard to explain the feeling, and I could say I hope it only gets better, but that’s pretty hard to beat,” said Janish. “It was pretty ideal. The bloody nose was well worth it, and I’d doing it again tomorrow if I got the chance.”
Manager Dusty Baker said he not only felt Janish would come through, he predicted it.
“Like Yogi (Berra) always says, ‘It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,’ and he ain’t lying,” said Baker. “To get a game-winning hit in your first major-league game? That’s heaven-sent. I said in the dugout, ‘Janish is going to win this game.’ You know, sometimes it’s your day and circumstances couldn’t be prevented because it might have been his day. It certainly was his day.”
It was starter Bronson Arroyo’s day, too. Then it wasn’t. It was his 6-0 lead that Lincoln and Cordero spit up, costing Arroyo a win. But his effort was magnificent.
Remember in St. Louis when Arroyo won a game and revealed that he added swimming to his workout routine, you know, “Swim to win.”
He wouldn’t say it, but after his one-run, four-hit effort Saturday in New York I wondered if the day before he swam across the East River and the Hudson River?
Then before his start Wednesday night against the Marlins — on only three days of rest — I spotted a large bag of dog food in front of his locker, something called Innova, and I asked, “Change your diet?”
He laughed and said, “That’s for my dog. I share custody.”
Then he took custody of the Great American Ball Park grass and treated the Florida Marlins like Yorkies — no runs, five hits, two walks, five strikeouts.
“I felt stronger as I went along,” said Arroyo. “I’ve been working out harder and I just feel like I can manage the game with 120 pitches and still be strong enough to beat guys in the seventh and eighth innings. I really couldn’t prior to a start in St. Louis.”
And he was performing on only three days of rest instead of the usual four.
“Three days rest? I think you feel better,” he said. “The command is there, you feel strong. You haven’t had that much time off and first thing you know you’re back on it again and that’s great. I was happy with seven zeros, that’s for sure.”
Florida came to town on a seven-game winning streak and in first place in the rugged National League East. The Reds have now whipped them three straight times, tying their longest winning streak of the year (3), done once before when they took three straight in San Francisco.
Are the young, no-name Marlins impostors? Is this the start of something big for the Reds?

Hall of Fame baseball writer Hal McCoy is in his 36th year of covering the Cincinnati Reds, the longest tenure for any active writer covering one team. Counting spring training and postseason games, McCoy has covered more than 7,000 major-league baseball games, written close to 18,000 baseball stories and eaten enough hot dogs to give Babe Ruth indigestion.

Chris Welsh is the best announcer the Reds have ever had and one of the best in all baseball. He is intelligent and does not waste our time expressing outrage about what has just happened which is what Thom Brenneman does, nor does he swim in baseball cliches like Jeff Brantley. He is the one who should be in the Hall of Fame. Yes, when I want to watch mock barbecue I will turn to Jeff Brantley. That’s just never happened for me.By mike cahill

George Grand gets on my nerves to the extent that I turn on the radio. He and Chris talk way too much about things other than the action on the field. Marty, in my opinion, is outstanding. I can put up with the banter, which is distracting at times, in exchange for his fearlessness in telling it the way he sees it. Jeff and Thom are great. I think Reds fans have been spoiled over the years with first class radio voices,i.e. Waite Hoyt,Al Michaels, Marty and Joe. George Grand is annoying but does anyone remember Ken Wilson or George Bryson?By d pi

Finally, others are starting to see the emperor has no clothes. While he does not sugar coat bad play, he has gotten quite lazy at doing the simple job of play-by-play calling the game over the past few years. Rarely does he give the type of pitch, location etc. nor is there much in the way of describing the defense with any regularity. My vote would be have Thom and Jeff simulcast on both TV and radio.By Sigh Yung

Marty must have always been caught up with himself—when Thom was born he didn’t have the time to spell his name correctly!By Mike

Your’e right Mike….Marty the HOF guy does make an inordinate amount of mistakes during a game. Just began noticing that this season. Mistakes such as he forgets how many outs there are, announcing the wrong player at bat, players who have played nearly an inning or more in the field and he didn’t catch it,while announcing the precedinig player. One reason is..the game itself has become secondary while chatting with his partner about everything from playing golf to how many sweaters he has and other nonsense. Maybe it’s time to concentrate on the game and get back to the basics.By Jimmy1tIME

Is there a way to email marty brennaman? He should see what the “classless” cubs fans did today… giving San Diego’s greg Maddux a standing ovation when he was taken from the game today.By Mike

The cowboy is very good either with Thom or Marty but I like him much better with Thom. They work well together. Marty can be hard to bear sometimes. He loves being referred to as the Hall of Famer. It must be a requirement of anyone who works with him or interviews him. He makes more verbal errors in a broadcast than the Reds make in 2 weeks and that is not easy to do. When Marty does a game it is all about Marty.By OakwoodTucky

Freel is an idiot and a loose cannon. I JUST watched the replay of last night’s exciting game finish and loved the welcoming swarm of stoked Reds piling all over hero Janish. Freel couldn’t contain himself and his shaved-headed, Animal House, about-to-beer beer-stoked frenzy and at the end of the celebration, he kicks his right knee into Janish’s nose and damn near breaks it. How necessary is a knee to the nose? Or even close! Janish is luck to just have Freel-drawn blood. Freel needs to settle down a bit and maybe do something that’s totally alien in his genetic makeup and think first…even if just for a second! I love the excitement and enthusiasm but we don’t need another SS on the DL, Ryan.By nyc

theres no question that thom and cowboy are really entertaining and im a little jealous that i didn’t bring it up first. thom is outstanding and cowboy is better as a color man than a play by play guy. they may be the best fox guys around. and nobodys said but i really think after 3 out of 4 good starts that bronson’s got it together again.By Mike

Right on..Jimmy1time!!..Your’e right..Thom and Brantley make a great team..Reason..they are of the same generation..when the Cowboy works with Daddy..he obviously is 2nd fiddle..and as Marty would say ( as he does 6-7 times a game..” There’s no question about that!! ” Count em! Time to get a new response, But, Thom and Brantley identify with each other and are very good. Time to put George to bed and let Chris do JTM commercials with Bronson!By Rob

Man, some of you guys are kind of a buzz kill. Enjoy the game, one game at a time. a win is a win - haven’t blown a save all, bound to happen sooner or later, and like the last poster said; they won. Unlike that time when good ole Danny Graves coughed it up to the ‘Cards. These are grown men playing a kids game, let them act like idiots after a big release like that. They needed it. As for Dunn being on the team: He has a NO-TRADE clause until June 15 I think. Totally agree that Griff should have recognized that he needed to get that runner over in the 9th. That’s where versatility in the line-up helps.By Steven Ross

It’s one thing to blow a 6-run lead to lose but when you still come back and win, a good sign. The mugging Janish took was rather childish. Ease-up on the celebration fellas. Is Dunn still on this team and if so…why? For the last time: Bruce will be called-up AFTER June 1st. Management holds better arbitration rights.By tom

Agree with OhDave. What the heck was Freel doing to Janish? Stupid drunk! He could’ve broke his collarbone, his arm, his nose, something…Yes, I know it’s a BIG hit for the rookie, but how STUPID would it be if you break a bone congratulating him? Absolutely rediculous. Freel, it’s time you check yourself back into AA.By ohdave

Hal, can you shed any light into the insane ritual that requires the hero of the game to be beaten senseless at the end of the game? Freel was trying to ride his back and someone else looked like he was trying to kick Janish in the face. Seemed pretty pointless and childish to me, like a mosh pit at a punk rock concert. Whatever happened to the Bounce?By Pete

Who’s ready for Lincoln to replace Belisle in the starting rotation? PATHETIC! And who ready to sign Corey Patterson to a long term contract? HMMMMM???? Anyone paying attention to that ball he missed on his backup play when Votto threw that strike to 2nd? Then he launches a rainbow to home, which he had absolutely no business doing. And lucky for him, Bako bailed his sorry @$$ out. He’s a freakin’ mess! GET JAY BRUCE UP HERE!!!!! PULLLEEEEEZZZZEEEE!!By Don L

WOw that was a fun way to end the game after the blown save in the 9th.. I saw Janish on deck and thinking if Bako gets on, that would be a sweet way to get your first hit.. and wala.. i saw the ball go fair and i jumped up and down like a kid in my own apartment (glad i wasnt louder..lol)…The team looks good so far on this homestand.,. anxious to see if they can sweep then have a great series against the Indians..GO REDS!!
