Baker’s TWO reasons for Patterson
One might label this one: “Beating the opposition the punch,” or, “A guilty conscience.”
Before he was asked by the media after Tuesday’s game, Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker brought it up himself, saying he knew people wandered why.
Oh, yeah?
So why did Baker permit Corey Patterson, a lefthander hitting .193, bat against Dodger lefthander Joe Beimel, a pitcher against whom Patterson was 1 for 13 with six strikeouts.
At the time, there were runners on second and third with two outs and the Reds trailed, 2-1. Patterson bounced meekly to second base.
Baker said his reason was two-fold:
ONE - He said at the time he didn’t believe Ken Griffey Jr. was available (out of the lineup with a virus), although Griffey pinch-hit in the ninth - and struck out.
And he said Patterson hits leftanders better than righthanders. Untrue. Patterson is hitting .167 against lefthanders and .199 against righthanders. Clearly, he hits neither.
TWO - Baker said he had no outfielders. Andy Phillips played outfield in spring training, but not since, and Baker said it would be unfair to him. Still, he could have played right field for a couple of innings, with Jay Bruce moving from right to center.
And shortstop Jolbert Cabrera played 16 games in the outfield for Louisville. He could have moved from shortstop to right and Paul Janish inserted a shortstop.
To me, those are feeble reasons, Illogical reasons.
Anyway, that’s Baker’s story and he is sticking to it as we sit in the press box at Great American Ball Park awaiting the second game of the Dodgers series.
The thing is - nobody is hitting. The Reds are hitting .178 on this 2-5 homestand. They’ve scored 2.3 runs a game. They are hitting .075 with runners in scoring position and are 0 for their last 11.
My Aunt Opal could hit better than that with her ironing board - and she is in a wheel chair.
The lineup hasn’t been posted yet, but if Patterson is in there I won’t be able to write tonight because there will be a mess on my laptop.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place.

Corey Patterson’s homerun; A MIRAGE!

Tuesday night Baker pinch hit for Bako, who, correct me if I’m wrong, has been pretty much a clutch hitter, and sent an ailing Griffey to the plate. Junior looked like the bat was way too heavy for him and struck out. I am, albeit at a snail’s pace, losing confidence in our manager. I don’t often agree with him and, you can ask my wife, I’m not second guessing him.

where O’ where was Chris Speier? Isnt’t the bench coach supposed to be next to Dusty, reminding him of his options? Unless Cabrera or Andy Phillips are horrible in the outfield, a pinch hitter should have come up.

It’s 9:15 and the Reds are once more getting their asses kicked AGAIN. Lousy pitching, no hitting in the clutch, and fear. Same old, same old. Very tiresome and depressing. Wait ‘till…what, 2010? 2011? 2015?

Hal..Dusty’s incorrect reasoning and his being vague should irratate you to no end. Does he think you walked into GABP 2 minutes ago? Really, it shows disrespect to you and other members of the press with the implication you don’t do your homework or I can blow smoke..they won’t know the difference! His credibility with you guys is certainly tainted!

Hey, Reds Autority. I see you still aren’t using your real e-mail address. Anyway, I wrote two days ago that Bailey wouldn’t start and Thompson probably would, so my blog readers read it two days ago.

Hopper’s activated and obviously, should be leading off but he isn’t because Patterson gets the nod with Votto leading off. Things that make you go: WTF? Honestly, doesn’t Jocketty question any of Dusty’s moves?

By the way, guys, Homer Bailey has been sent down to AAA Louisville and Norris Hopper has been activated from the DL. So who starts in place of Homer against the Yanks this weekend? I’m told it will be Daryl Thompson. Remember…you heard it here FIRST!

Aren’t two of the primary (and few!)responsibilities of bench coach to tell the manager 1)who’s available off the bench (Griffey) and 2)what certain players stats are in certain situations (Patterson vs. LH or RH? Either the bench coach was asleep or Dusty’s lying. Or maybe he’s just not very good at managing a baseball team.

“To me, those are feeble reasons, Illogical reasons.” Hal, I am proud of you for making that comment. With your comment plus what T. Brennaman, Brantley, and Welsh said last night, it seems the media is beginning to see what a walking load of B.S. Dusty Baker is.

I don’t understand why Patterson is still here. I do understand why Dusty gave him a chance. Patterson has not been terrible in the past and was a top prospect at one time, but he should be gone. He doesn’t even belong in the Major leagues the way he has played this year.

I read where Patterson said this after last night game:I thought I had good at-bats, he said. You cant worry about results. People look at charts and worry about results. Youve got to maintain your approach. You have your ups and downs. Could I be playing better? Sure. Ive been in this situation before. Youve got to keep playing.” Clearly Baker and Patterson doesn’t. Here all this time I thought that was what baseball was all about, just goes to show what I know. I guess we fans are suppose to be happy with last place. Think of like golf, where the one with the low score is really the winner. I guess that must be how Patterson see’s it and Baker too for batting him lead off or for even having him on this team.

nice blog hal..i don’t know what dusty sees in patterson or if he just feels bad for him i have no idea i don’t think he really knows what to do with the lineup cus he keeps the same every game he might move some people around but not that much every game its gonna be phillips dunn edwin votto in the middle i think that needs to change cus its not working at all..if patterson is playing tonight and batting leadoff i don’t think i will be able to watch the game..

I am convinced that Baker just loves the guy for whatever reasons. That is why he is on the team and that is why he keeps making excuses for putting him in the lineup and when he refuses to take him out. I cannot ever remember the Reds having a similar situation. I go all the way back to Fred Hutchinson and guys like Patterson were always shown the door by now. It is what it is and I give up trying to figure it out. It will be interesting when Hopper comes up in the next few days. Common sense says put him in CF and lead off. How many think that will happen?

Hopper is at the park. Time to activate him and send Andy Phillips home. Let’s be honest, we are stuck with Can’t Play til the end of the year.

Time to cut the losses and dump the bum. We have to have somebody that is a better backup OF than Patterson — maybe some high school kid we just drafted?
