Fourth of July Goof-up
How many demerits do I get for a Fourth of July faux pas?
For some reason, I plopped a Toronto Maple Leafs hat on my head this morning, a hat I purchased when I visited the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
As I walked into the clubhouse, Ken Griffey Jr. looked at me and said, “That’s unpatriotic right there.”
Knowing not of what he spoke, I said, “What?”
And he said, “Wearing a hat from Canada on the Fourth of July.”
When I mentioned it to manager Dusty Baker, he laughed said, “Well, Canada Day was July 1, you’re just three days late.” Good answer, I thought. And I told that to Griffey, who promptly said, “That’s you. Always three days late.”
Then pitching coach Dick Pole walked by and said, “Bonjour, Hal, bonjour.”
I surrender. No mas, no mas.
STOPPED in the Washington Nationals clubhouse before Friday’s game and before long a corner was filled with Austin Kearns, Aaron Boone, Dmitri Young and Jose Rijo. Also in the room were Wily Mo Pena and Felipe Lopez.
As Young sat down, he said, “I’m coming to this corner to be with the Reds Alumni Association. All I need is blond hair.” When Young played for the Reds, he dyed his hair orange-yellow, which really turned off old-school manager Jack McKeon, who said, “All he needs are platform shoes and flappy collars.”
Said Boone, “You know what this weekend is? It is the Throwback Reds vs. the Reds.
WHEN KEARNS leaves the stadium today, a surprise awaits him - not one he will welcome. When he drove to the park Friday, Kearns thought it would be funny to park in Adam Dunn’s personal spot in the garage. So he parked it and locked it.
Then Dunn arrived and saw Kearns in his spot. What did he do? What any red-blooded male would do when somebody takes his parking spot. Parking rage.
Dunn deflated all four tires and slabbed peanut butter under all four door handles. “He thought it was pretty funny to take my parking spot,” said Dunn. “Let’s see how funny it is when he wants to leave in a hurry after the game.”
ANYBODY EVER wonder what has happened to Brandon Larson, the Reds No. 1 draft pick in 2002 and who not only was a bad third baseman, his career average was .179 for 109 major-league games?
Kearns received a text message recently from Larson, somebody he hadn’t heard from in ages: “How ya doin,’ man? Hope you’re staying healthy. By the way, do you have any bats I can have? I’m playing independent league ball.”
Speaking of Larson, a Triple-A Hall of Famer (I made that up), Kevin Barker reached 227 career RBIs for the Louisville Bats Thursday, tying Larson’s career record for the Louisville franchise.
SOME NEWS, too.
Pitcher Aaron Harang has some tightness in his forearm, so he won’t take his turn Saturday in the rotation. His place will be taken by Josh Fogg, with Harang moving back to a Tuesday start in Chicago.
“Nothing serious,” said Baker. “He had the same tightness in his forearm a couple of years ago and I’m told he skipped one turn and then was fine the rest of the way.”
Ominous, very ominous.
Fogg has spent the last month rehabbing a sore lower back in the minors and said, “I spent a month in the minors and that went good. Now it’s time to test the big leagues again. My first round in the big with the Reds was not too successful (1-2, 9.85 in four starts and seven relief appearances). Let’s see if the second round can be better.”
For those wondering about the seriousness of Norris Hopper’s elbow injury this season, well, he is going to undergo Tommy John elbow surgery Tuesday - done for the season.
“That’s the reason I had to pinch-hit lefthander Paul Bako against Pittsburgh lefthander John Grabow the other night,” said Baker. “Hopper couldn’t do anything but pinch-run and maybe bunt. He winched every time he took a swing.”
Hopper said his elbow began bothering him the first part of May, “And I tried to play through it but it was unbearable. When they said it should be getting better it was getting worse. Hey, this comes along with the game. Injuries are part of it. It’s how you bounce back.”
The surgery is Tuesday and Hopper starts rehab work on Wednesday, “And I should be ready for spring training next year.”
THERE ARE some rumors floating out there that David Weathers is about to be traded to the Florida Marlins, or some other team.
“Haven’t heard anything about that,” said Baker. “Nothing at all. Hey, I hear talk about Aaron Harang, too, and that ain’t gonna happen. Teams are swooping in to pick the cherry trees of teams they think are out of it.”

Hall of Fame baseball writer Hal McCoy is in his 36th year of covering the Cincinnati Reds, the longest tenure for any active writer covering one team. Counting spring training and postseason games, McCoy has covered more than 7,000 major-league baseball games, written close to 18,000 baseball stories and eaten enough hot dogs to give Babe Ruth indigestion.

Another ignorant comment by Brarhopper. Wow, man. Junior saying he would rather be on his yacht during the All-Star break is not him having an attitude or trying to have his head up in the clouds. I believe Hal has talked about this on here. Griffey’s mindset, according to what Hal said is, been there, done that. He would rather a newer MLB player who hasn’t been to the All-Star Game get to go. Before you come on here or anywhere else to sit and pick at or tear down (attempt to) a first ballot Hall of Famer, perhaps you should get your facts straight and have some type of valid argument.By Brarhopper

Griffey got bumped from the All Star roster. Guess now he’ll get his wish — to NOT play — and he can go cruising on his yacht. Imagine NOT wanting to play in the All Star game! What an attiutde that screams. Seems the public has picked up on that and his votes tailed off after he seemingly had 2nd slot locked up a week or so ago. See, Matt, it ain’t just a few of us…it’s the majority getting their eyes opened! That wouldn’t include apologists like you, of course. No, go argue with THOSE numbers!By Ron

Just a thought…the fact that Greg Maddux is very good and Dick Pole was one of his pitching coaches…could it be that Greg Maddux might have been very, very good no matter who was his coach? Just a thought.By L- in Indy

The flag patch struck me as odd too, but it is the correct way to wear it. The Union should always be closest to your heart or shown as advancing (never in retreat) when on a sleeve.By AP-FLORIDA

Yes they will. It seems as though the guy we faced yesterday (Redding) and the pitcher on the mound today for the Nats are the best they have to offer. But with Volquez crankin’ it up today, I think it’s going to be a fun day down at the ballpark. This will be Volquez’s last tune-up before the All-Star Game, which hopefully he will start. And what better team to face than the “Inepts”, errr I mean the Nationals.By Y-City Jim

Balester in his debut on July 1 pitched five innings, surrendered 1 hits and 1 run, walked 3, hit a batter, struck out 3, and threw 95 pitches against the Marlins. Reds will need to be patient.By Matt

I didn’t notice the flags being backwards, Florida Buckeye. Good observation, and good point!! I’m not trying to jump overboard here, but do we realize that if the Reds win today they’ll complete a 5-2 homestand, sweep the 4 games from the Nationals, and be 43-47? Might we be pushing for, if nothing else, an above-.500 season?By Florida Buckeye

Hey All, first off, I really wish Reds fans wouldn’t keep attacking one another…We’re all here for the same reason: TO comment on/support our Cincinnati Reds. . on that note, I wanted to comment on two things: I think that a salary cap argument is not warranted in MLB at this time. Case in point, the Tampa Rays…On another more disturbing topic: Whereas I appreciate the Reds wearing camo jerseys, I really wished they would have had the American Flags sewn on correctly. On every jersey the flag was backwards…Symbolic of our team: Trying to get it right; but just not getting it…By Matt

Hey, AP-Florida. Good morning. Yep, the Nationals pretty much aren’t a major league team. They are WOEFUL. Matter of fact, they give woeful a new meaning. With Volquez pitching today, a 4 game sweeeeeep should be in the works. Then it’s on to Chicago and Milwaukee for a big road trip.By AP-FLORIDA

Brarhopper, your post, quite frankly is ridiculous and has no truth to it. Griffey has no passion for the game? I guess that’s why he has played hurt many times for the Reds. Or why he has the career numbers he has. I guess all that must be dumb luck, huh? I don’t know about you but I happen to respect a man who has 604 career home runs, is one of only 18 players to have 5,000 or more total bases, and many more accolades. Yes, he has lost a few steps. But was he a rally-killer yesterday when he hit a 2 run homer in the first to give the Reds a 2-0 lead? Was he a rally-killer on Monday night when he hit a walk-off two run home run to give the Reds a win? I could go on and on with great moments that Junior has had while he has been a Red. Has he lost a few steps? Sure. Is he the player he once was? Nope. But should he be “riding the bench”? Absolutely not. You strike me as one of those “fans” who were pouring beer on Griffey and throwing peanuts at him when he was laying on the ground injured not so many years ago.By Brarhopper

Hay Matt, never judge a book by its cover. I thought that a matt was something you stood on to dry off after a shower. So see? You gotta be one of those dudes who comes on here to knock somebody else’s post? Is that why you read this blog or is it to contribute an original thought? Personally, I believe Griffey is a waste of money and position on this team. Yes, he WAS great and had a spectacular career, but he’d be better off moving down in the order and sitting out more games. He has no passion and no longer emits any electricity. It would be better for the team. Or do you think he ought to play everyday just out of respect? There seem to be two schools of thought on this blog. Since you always blindly defend him, I guess your school is obvious…that the Reds should just play him all the time and let him make his regular rally-kill outs in the 3 hole.By Matt

With your name, “Brarhopper”, I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to take you seriously. At any rate though, it looks as if your another fan who is happy to sit back and wait for Griffey to strike out or make an out of any kind so you can come on blogs like this and rip him apart. While Junior should not be batting in the third spot, at least give credit where credit is due. As far as the Reds victory yesterday, it should be a no-brainer. The past two games, and today and Sunday, should be the easiest four wins of the season. The Nationals are the WORST MLB team. And, we’re out of the cellar now!! Hopefully for good!!By Y-City Jim

Wasn’t it the big city market owners who started this crap? Steinbrenner and Reinsdorf in particular? Educate me…it seems that’s who started all of this. And then that clown in Texas giving A-Rod a 10-year, $250 million deal? What a jaggoff! (No, not W Bush, a different clown.)By Y-City Jim

Pat, I’m not so sure it is the players holding it up. Lack of a salary cap only benefits the top players from a player’s perspective. I think certain controlling owners are blocking a cap because if there was one suddenly the rules of competition have changed. Then you would have to be smarter rather than just richer.By HuberTucky

y-city, I agree with a salary cap. But, I don’t think the players do. Another ideal is to have the leagues split into big market and small market. I’d rather see the reds compete with the pittsburghs, kansas cities and milwaukees of the world. They’d have a better chance.By AP-FLORIDA

Someone has to sit down with owners and players in order to convince them to the merits of a salary cap. Right now the only ones benefitting are the upper echelon of both. MLB will generate more revenue when the possibilities rise of there being winning franchise anywhere not just in Boston, New York, Chicago, etc.By Mike-Cinci

The Reds have been disappointing but there are many others in the same boat. The records: Dodgers 42-44, Mets 42-44, Pirates 40-45, Blue Jays 41-46, Braves 41-46, Reds 41-47, Astros 40-47, Royals 39-48, Giants 38-49, Indians 37-49, Rockies 36-51, Mariners 34-52, Padres 34-53, Nationals 34-54. The Yankees with their $220 million payroll have 4 more wins than the Reds. Are they happy in Gotham? The Tigers spend $137 million and have 2 more wins than our beloved Redlegs. Joe Torre in LA has one more win than Dusty. Bobby Cox and his high powered Braves have the same number of wins. The Tribe has been awful. The Reds have not been very good but they have plenty of company. Maybe there is hope.By AP-FLORIDA

Just when the Reds reacquire Andy Phillips and (in my mind anyway) make Patterson the obvious man out the next time the Reds need a 5th starter, Norris Hopper goes on the DL for the rest of the season. Just keep watching the numbers, folks. Yes, Griffey hit a HR today…but that is NOT the general rule. Rather, he is batting .237 which is not even 1-for-4 and USUALLY makes an out. There is bound to be the occasional flash from past greatness, but the man is essentially over the hill. Like the old saying, even a blind hog finds an acorn. Griffey is NOT your everyday 3-hole man. Again, look at the numbers. Check the facts (stats) and leave your emotions at the door.By Ridge Runner

And three batters into the game Dusty Baker proves why he is the manager and some number cruncher in Dayton is not. Bruce doubles from the two hole and Griffey homers two pitches later. Since Griffey has hit most of his 604 home runs from the 3 hole, I would think that history would be on his side as opposed to the five game reference point given.By Jeremy

Why, oh why, is Keppinger batting sixth today? The Reds are now 4-1 when Hairston and Keppinger bat 1-2. Why all the jiggling around of the lineup? Mainly to accommodate Junior so he can bat third everyday. If Dusty thinks Bruce needs to be moved up because his bat is getting hot, bat him third! Leave the 1-2 combo of Hairston and Keppinger alone.
