Of Griffey’s gestures
As former President George Bush once said, “Read my lips.”
That’s pretty much what Ken Griffey Jr. was mouthing to the radio booth Saturday night after he hit a home run. And for those who can (or those who can’t) read lips, yes, that was an epithet Griffey uttered as he make a cut gesture across his throat at home plate.
It was aimed at radio broadcaster Jeff Brantley.
“Oh, you saw that?” said Griffey. Yes, and so did the television world.
Griffey said he was upset that Brantley said Griffey was pouting because the Reds haven’t picked up his $16 million option for next year.
“If I was worried about money, would I have even come here in the first place?” said Griffey.
Brantley denies ever saying that on the air and, in fact, said he didn’t say it until he and Griffey had an early-morning chat Sunday in the players dining room. Brantley believes Griffey was angry over comments he made about the defense of the corner outfielders (Griffey and Adam Dunn).
Anyway, that’s the genesis of Griffey’s gesture. And do you know how I found out about this?
I was nearly Josh Fogg-ed in the press box Saturday night. With my eyes on my laptop as I wrote, I heard Reds PR man Rob Butcher yell, “Hal, duck.” I dropped my head and covered it with both hands. I felt the ball graze the hairs on the back of my hands.
The ball was fouled by Griffey.
After the game, I said to him, “I thought you were my friend?”
Said Griffey, “That wasn’t meant for you. That was meant to boxes down.”
Griffey didn’t know his foul ball nearly maimed me. He thought I was referring to his gesture toward Brantley.
JAY BRUCE, 0 for 11, took a seat Sunday, replaced by Corey Patterson. Said Bruce to Griffey, “A good, solid, benching.”
“No, no,” said Griffey. “You are getting a day off before you go home to Houston and have to deal with your first game in front of the home folks.”
Griffey was right on.
“Griffey knows,” said manager Dusty Baker. “That’s exactly why. Give him a day before he goes home. “Guys generally perform well near their hometown, but it can wear you down, too.”
Bruce produced a sheet of paper from an e-mail - his ticket requests for the three games in Houston, “65 the first game, 63 the second game, 53 the third game.”
“You know how many tickets I left for my rookie debut in Seattle, my first game?” said Griffey. “Two. One for my mom and one for the seat next to her for her purse.”
Baker also acknowledged that Bruce is on one of his bad-pitch chasing modes, striking out a lot on pitches outside the strike zone.
“He’s chasing that rabbit instead of stalking it,” said Baker. “You never catch a rabbit by chasing it. You have to stalk it.”
WHEN THE media walked into Baker’s office Sunday morning, he was finishing a phone call.
“My sister (Tanya),” said Baker. “She always calls when we’re losing. She calls and says, ‘You OK? I know how you are when you’re losing.’”
Baker then talked about getting only two hits Saturday against lefthander Jorge De La Rosa.
“We went fishing against him,” said Baker. “We went fishing but we weren’t catching anything. He was throwing a lot of bait at us.”
Dunn had one of the two hits off De La Rosa and said, “That guy had a 6.71 ERA. How can that be? I swear he was throwing a change-split-cutter. Really. I was on second base and that’s exactly what it looked like - a change-split-cutter.”
JAVIER VALENTIN walked into the clubhouse Sunday and saw a writer near his locker.
“You waiting for me?” he asked.
“Yeah, you’ve been traded,” the writer said, kidding.
“Where? To The Bahamas?” said Valentin.
Griffey, hearing that, popped up with, “If that’s the case, when you get there you will find me in your suitcase and you’ll have to buy some new clothes.”

Clomiphene(Clomid) tablet What is this medicine? CLOMIPHENE is a fertility drug used to increase the chance of getting pregnant. It is used to help women ovulate (produce a mature egg) properly during their cycle. Compared to other fertility treatments, clomiphene alone does not greatly increase your chances of having multiple babies. An increased chance of having twins may occur in roughly 5 out of every 100 women who take this medication. Occasionally clomiphene is prescribed to men with fertility problems due to low sperm counts.

This coming from a person with the sn of “braindeadmatt”? I think I’m done laughing now so I can continue to type. I’m the child? Ha. Again, I’m not the one with the sn of “braindeadmatt”. I do act like an adult on this blog, and while I differed with your opinions, I didn’t question your character or insult your manhood. You and your friends brarhopper and Hubertexasohiotucky have done that to me, and it’s unacceptable and flat out wrong. In what way should I “act like an adult on this blog” in your eyes, Wizard? By agreeing with everything you and your two friends say? By believing that Dusty is a bad manager? By believing that Jocketty doesn’t know what he’s doing as GM? By believing that the Reds are a talentless team and that the players on the team don’t care if they win or lose? Those opinions are reckless, irresponsible and just simply incorrect. You can argue those positions until your blue in the face, but at the end of the day facts are facts and falsehoods are falsehoods. It’s like the illustration I gave of a person insisting that the sky is green. There are just certain facts that are clear cut and no matter how much you don’t want to believe them or argue them, it doesn’t make them any less truthful. The arguments that I make on this blog are based on facts, numbers and statistics. Those opinions are based on something. I don’t just talk out of my hind end about things that I don’t know about. A person who talks about things they know nothing about is foolish. Especially when they insist they are right when confronted and resort to personal attacks to win their arguments, which is what you, Wizard and your two friends brarhopper and Hubertucky do on an every day basis.

I stand by what I have already said. I will say this: I enjoyed seeing him sprint recently, on a couple of different occasions. It proved to me that he could run that way—it hasn’t always been there. I will also say, others on the Reds, have also jogged to first, when they should have been sprinting—EE is one of them. Now, I realize EE isn’t fast—but there is a difference in running hard and not doing so. I want to say this again—I have not said anything at all about some things you have heard from others—example:albatross/cancer/even-keeled—I have never said those words.Period. Because I don’t, and have never believed them. I do however, stand by what I HAVE said—This year he has hurt this team, much more than he has helped it—and for that reason alone he should be—playing less/hitting lower in the lineup/ and hitting more to left field than just this past week{he should have been doing it earlier in the year}—instead of trying to pull everything out of the park to right.Considering his lack of success at doing this—one could easily believe it was selfish of him, when he is capable of driving in runs, hitting to left—at least until he gets some semblance of a stroke to right field. I am most disturbed by your including my name with others remarks, when I, in fact, have NOT used those other terms about Griffey.I respect all the qualities that he has exhibited in getting his HOF stats; and how he has gone about it{no steroids, etc}. No one can deny that he has done it the right way. However, he is NOT what he was—And, just because he once was terrific, does not mean I have to admire what he is doing now—I don’t!And, nothing you say is going to change my mind. Many on here have more knowledge than I do about baseball—but I wasn’t too shabby myself, as an athlete—playing all three sports well, at the college level, and in fact, could have signed with the Twins had I not played football in college.I was also a professional bowler. So you aren’t talking to someone who is a complete never was… I have my opinions, and believe I deserve your respect of them.

Wizard, you and I just don’t agree about Kenneth Griffey Junior. Plain and simple. I respect the player Griffey is and was and what he has meant to the game of MLB. You and your friends brarhopper and Hubertexasfloridacaliforniatucky just don’t seem to respect Griffey at all. He can’t do anything to satisfy you. It doesn’t matter what he does, or doesn’t do. You three think that if he isn’t leading the Reds in a cheer before the game starts or sprinting off the field between innings that he doesn’t care about the game or what he does on the field. The fact is that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you listen to what his fellow players say, his former managers and coaches, you know that that’s false. I have heard several people who know Griffey personally talk through the media, and even Griffey himself talk about his “attitude” or whatever. The fact is that Junior is a very even-keeled, unflappable guy. He’s not going to yell and cuss and scream. That’s not his style. It doesn’t matter how much griping you do about it, he is not going to change. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about the game or how he plays. He is just a very even-keeled, relaxed individual. I think with the kind of career that Griffey has had, he has a right to be even-keeled and relaxed if he wants to. But to say or imply that Griffey has contributed nothing to the Reds this year or since he’s been with the Reds is simply a falsehood. A blatant, patent lie. You can think whatever you want. But the facts and statistics prove you wrong, period. And calling me names and attacking me is not going to change things either.

Perhaps someone can tell the wizard of facts—Mat—how many runners his over the hill right fielder has left on base, while hitting in the # 3 position during THIS season— I’m not talking about living in the PAST, as Mat likes to do with him. What exactly has his hero done for this baseball team this year, on a CONSISTANT basis? After, looking at the facts of his failures this year, perhaps we will realize that I am correct in saying the man is over the hill, resembling an overweight softball player, on many occassions. He can’t make the plays he once made—and that ain’t my fault—it’s his.If you can’t hustle each night, you shouldn’t be allowed to play anymore. What is hard to understand about that? Even ESPN broadcasters were calling out Manny for slowing up, when hitting into a double play the other night! It’s prima donna crap!

Yes, Wizard. He runs when it is necessary to run. If Griffey doesn’t sprint out a weak ground ball to second I’m not losing any sleep over it. I believe he has paid his dues, and if he doesn’t want to sprint out a grounder, he doesn’t have to. Get over it. I can’t read? I can’t remember what I read? I am delusional? No on all three. Do you have anything to back up those claims with or are you just blowing smoke again? I am a little girl and a clown? The insults continue. Again, you can’t win this argument objectively or on merit, so you resort to personal insults. That’s high-class, sir I’ll tell you that much. What I have said about Griffey’s career or statistics is not made up, it’s fact. Feel free to research it yourself. Just because you don’t want to see things for how they are doesn’t mean that it’s not that way. Either way, until you are ready to debate the issues where we differ in a responsible, adult way, I will not be corresponding with you further on this or any other forum. I’m not going to trade insults and name-calling with you. I’m here to discuss all things related to Reds baseball. I am able to back up my opinions with facts. I don’t just talk out of my hind end and be proud of my ignorance. Apparently unless you think Griffey is a horrible player and man, then you are “delusional” or “worship” him. One thing you should remember Wizard is that just because you and your friends Hubertucky and brarhopper claim something is real doesn’t make it so. Griffey doesn’t sprint out routine ground balls? How many veteran players who have played for 20-some years do you see sprinting down the first base line like they’re a 21 year old rookie? I think Junior has earned the right to jog out a few routine ground balls. You three act like if a player isn’t putting on pom-poms and leading the Reds in a cheer that they don’t care. That’s simply not the case. As Hal has pointed out in his blog on here, Griffey’s leg is being held together by nuts, bolts and screws, which are keeping his hamstring from falling off the bone. Give the guy a break. He’s 38 years old. He’s not the player he used to be. As far as him not being able to hit to the opposite field, I have seen him hit in that area several times this season, including a home run in the 4th inning of Saturday’s game. You act like all he hits are ground balls to second. Not true. You have no proof that Griffey “loafs”, other than something you heard somebody else say or what you read somewhere. That’s not good enough. Again, you and the rest of the “three Musketeers” don’t know what you are talking about when it comes to Griffey. It’s one thing to be ignorant about something. But it’s another thing to be proud of your own ignorance. And that’s what you are doing when someone calls your hand on your ignorance, as I have, and you respond by calling names. Not being able to answer questions. No, I won’t “go away”, Wizard. While you and your two friends Hubertucky and brarhopper continue to misrepresent Junior and this team, I’ll be here to give a Hall of Famer some respect that he deserves.

If he can’t hustle every play—“HE” is wrong. If he can no longer pull the ball, efficiently, except for weak ground balls to second, “HE” needs to hit to left, or sit down—If “HE” is no longer capable of his Hall Of Fame past, the very least he should do, is move down in the order! It isn’t about disrespect—it is about recognizing REALITY! Recently, I have seen him run the bases well; but He has not run hard every time he needed to do it—he has loafed. You don’t see young Mr. Bruce jogging to first base on routine grounders! He busts his a$$! Griffey doesn’t. If you want your hero to be given credit tell him to earn it! His PAST doesn’t count! You, boy, would do well to remember what has been said, before you do your police work on the blogs—or better yet, just go away, so others don’t have to read your blabbering.Griffey is not a cancer and I have never said he was—I have said, he loafs—and does not deserve to be in the lineup everyday—nor was Willy Mays played everyday in his last year! It’s REALITY—not HERO worship!

Were talking about the guy who won 10 straight gold gloves. you should also think about how hes never been involved with cheating unlike almost every other star in todays world of baseball. Bonds, Sosa, Mcguire, Clemens. Those are just some of the recent accused. Isnt it weird when that every star you see today is huge and has six different vains popping out of there arms. Pujols, Howard, Arod. I seriously doubht that at least one of these players has been invovled in cheating. Hey, brarhopper, Hubertucky and Wizard. Negative swagger on the part of Griffey? How so? Because he doesn’t jump up and down on the field and get on top of the Reds dugout with the cheerleaders when they cheer on the Reds? What proof or evidence do you have that Griffey has a negative swagger about him? You three always have your endless, ridiculous, ignorant barrages about Griffey, but you never offer one shred of evidence or proof to back up your claims. He has done nothing since he came to the Reds? I agree that he hasn’t been the same player he was in Seattle since coming here, but let’s be real about it. One of only 4 players to hit over 300 home runs with one team and over 200 with another team. All the big moments that Junior has had since coming to the Reds, and he’s done “nothing” to help the team? Nonsense. Unless he staged his own injuries he couldn’t help the injuries and setbacks that he’s had. Letting balls drop in front of him? Unless you wanted Griffey to break his neck, or some other part of his body, the ball that dropped in front of him a few nights ago was not going to be caught. But that’s right. Unless Junior goes 5-5 every night with 2 home runs and 6 or 7 RBI you won’t be satisfied. It’s ridiculous. And as far as Griffey being an “albatross” or “cancer” on this team, unless you’re in he clubhouse or on the inside looking out with this team, you have no business saying that, because again, you have no proof of those claims. Lay off the hate Griffey, hate-the-Reds Kool Aid “three Musketeers”, because it gets more ridiculous and more outrageous with each post.

I can’t believe people actually made the comment about New York fans. That’s exactly my point, those teams fans are known for “Fair Weather Loyalty”. They’ll cheer A-Rod when he’s hitting, but calling him God knows what when he is not. It was always my belief that our fans were better than that. I’m embarrassed that someone would actually compare Ken Griffey Jr to Barry Bonds. You might as well be a Cubs fan since that almost equates to their level. How someone can question Griffey’s committment to this team at the time of the trade is comical at best. He took a back-loaded contract with deferred monies to give the Reds the opportunity to win with him and they promptly caught a case of the “Mike Brown’s” and surrounded him with mediocrity. For a city that can forgive Pete Rose for betting on baseball and you want to toss Griffey under the bus because this TEAM has underperformed for 9 years either shows you have no concept of how baseball in this town is played or you’re just another tired New York wannabe. The offer still stands, either support the players on the team, for better or worse find another team since you like embarrassing the real fans of this city

After 9 years of disappointment with the “on field” production of Junior, his lack of leadership, and in many professional circles, his bad influence (remember Larkin’s turn in attitude in 2000?) upon the team, it’s time to part ways with the under inspired, underachieving, outfielder. It could have been a story of the ages…hometown kid comes to lead the Reds back to greatness, but Jr. lacked the offseason commitment to make it happen. At times he seemed like a good guy, other times he was cutting out of games early, against his skipper’s wishes. A spoiled apple turn good ones rotten. With the latest childish act of mouthing “FU” within eyesight of everyone present on Saturday night, just after gesturing to Reds announcer Jeff Brantly he’d like to slit his throat, enough is enough. If he’s not producing on the field, the feel goods of a former superstar coming home all went down the drain in these unforgivable acts on Saturday. Although many of us are diehards, sports were created for entertainment, distraction from the challenges we all face from time to time. No one needs to be subjected to the Kid acting like a fool, especially the future leaders of our city. Let Jr go into the Hall as a Mariner. His best years where in Seattle. As sad as reality is, his passion for the game, his drive, were all but washed up by the time he wore our beloved Red. Please, Mr. Castellini, do not pick up Junior’s option. His dismal production is only surpassed by the miserable chip carried upon his shoulders. Junior and the saddened Reds fans are left with “what could have been…”

Well, obviously the cursing and making the threatening gesture is not something a player should be doing. As an out of towner fan of a different team though, I think that the fans treatment of Griffey is laughable. Yes, Griffey has been injured quite a bit during his contract, it is the risk you take when signing a long term contract to get a discounted rate. If Griffey had been healthy during those years he would have been worth A-Rod money and he was making about half of that and happy to do so to play for his home team and help field a winning team. He has always seemed to fight hard to make it back to the team from his injuries and has played hard outside of this year. He does seem to be hitting a wall now and his age and probably some of the outside pressures are getting to him, but the way Cincy fans treat him like it is his fault that they have had some of the worst management in baseball is just foolish.

I agree that it is not Griffey’s fault that he got injuried, but I also believe that the Reds have insurance for that sort of thing, don’t they? As for who could do a better job hitting third, that is a moot point, but it should be the best hitter on the team, that isn’t Griffey anymore. To the poster who stated that the Reds are the worst, you are sadly misinformed. Try going to a Phils game sometime, for one. New Yokers have been known to be very hard on their players when they don’t perform.

I have to agree with Rich. Fans of other teams in great baseball cities (Cards, Cubs, etc..)would never treat one of their own this way. Who on this blog can say that it was a bad idea when we signed Jr.? Injuries happen. They happen when the player is hustling down the 1st baseline or jumping into a wall to make a catch. And with Jr. not being juiced up, his recovery time was longer than some of the other ‘sluggers’ in his era. Jr. took less money for his home team. He has revamped his contract to get talent here. 16 million is a ton of money for this team but if Jr. was going for home run #750 right now he would be a Cincy hero (and if you ask some kids or families in need, they would tell you he IS a hero as his off the field contributions are numerous). Not his fault he got hurt or that previous management never built a champion around him. Jr. gets warmer welcomes on the road, and I find that sad. Riddle me this- who would be better batting 3rd? This team just doesn’t have the pieces right now. Again, not Jr.’s fault. His dad must be so proud of the fans in this city…..

I’ve lived in Cincinnati my whole life and have been around the US watching games and I can honestly say that our fans are worse to our players than others. I sure hope Junior isn’t pouting about the Reds not picking up the $16.5 million option because it isn’t going to happen, and he isn’t going to find any club out there willing to pay a fraction of that. Considering he spent 35% of his time here on the DL while raking in $100 million perhaps he should consider playing for free for the Reds the next couple seasons.

Showing his true colors, “Griffey said he was upset that Brantley said Griffey was pouting because the Reds haven’t picked up his $16 million option for next year.” Upset? why the hell would any team want to spend that kind of money on a selfish guy who is done hustling, won’t move down in the order for the good of the team, is batting .243, is done hustling, doesn’t run hard and lets fly balls drop in front of him, and has a permanent negative swagger that rubs off on younger teammates? Only a fool would pay a prima dona has-been $16 million to infect a team the way this guy does.

Truth hurts as Brantley’s right! Our corner “D” is average. It’s time for Griffey to go. No class using an epithet as he make a cut gesture across his throat at home plate. Good role model. Goodbye!

Probably the worst three day drubbing I can remember at home, being outscored by Colorado 24 to 3 at the time of this writing. Horrific pitching, non-existent hitting and again poor defense. The team played this series with less than zero fire in the belly; time for some changes to get players, including pitchers, who want to step up. So, what’s on Walt’s mind now after watching this three day atrocity?

“This team is a few pieces short of a playoff berth or World Series berth, but this IS a good team, and Reds fans have a lot to be excited about.” “The Reds are close” “The Reds finally have a plethora of fine pitching, and they need to keep all of team that they can. And let’s not forget progress IS being made.” “the month of July winds down with the Reds playing a soft spot in their schedule, expect them to eclipse the .500 mark” Just a few optimistic comments made by the “experts” prior to the weekend. Care to rethink things guys. Oh well, there’s alwasy Bobby livingston.

How should Griffey’s gesture be viewed? On the one hand, we can say Griffey has enough to concentrate on during the game and shoudn’t worry about what Brantley is saying. On the other hand, Brantley needs to tone down the criticism. Too often it comes across as a personal attack. I side with Griffey, because Brantley has made a habit of angering various players. By the way, I’m about ready to give up on Encarnacion as a third baseman. Too many errors, too much indecision. Is the outfield in his future?

Nice, I didn’t think I’d ever find out who he was f’bombing last night after the HR. Thanks.
