Reds sign No. 5 pick

The Reds haven’t yet corraled their No. 1 pick, Yonder Alonso, but they haven’t been twiddling their fingers and sitting on their thumbs.

On Thursday they signed their No. 5 pick, Juan Carlos Sulbaran, a pitcher out of American Heritage High School in Fort Lauderdale. He was signed for $500,000.

Juancarlos Sulbaran, never told scouts he was going to school no matter what. As a matter of fact he was commited to UF under the condition that 1 or 2nd round money will keep him from school. JC Sulbaran was Red fagged by some teams because an freak injury in his junior year. I’m his father and his coach and obviously a Reds Fan. I congratulate the Reds management for their efforts to rebuild the Big Red Machine. With the talend Reds has on hand, the Big Red Machine should be back by 2010.

I heard Bench tell the barehanding a pitch story himself on a talk show, I think Letterman. It was Gerry Arrigo and was during a game in San Diego.

Alonzo won’t be ready for prime time until at least the 2010 season. As soon as the time passes for the Reds to still be on the hook for his remaining salary, Ross will sign with someone.

With Yonder Alonso signed to $4.9 million deal does that mean Votto is ticketed for left field? Sure looks like it or he will be trade bait. With the shortage of catchers you would have thought David Ross would be picked up by somebody by now. Something should happen in the next few days.

Y-City Jim,I have heard that about Bench catching a ball barehanded. I doubt though that it was Maloney because he had a great fastball. It could have been one of the others you mentioned although I really don’t know.

The saying goes “if you aren’t part of the solution then you are part of the problem.” I don’t know how you can accurately measure how well a catcher handles pitchers though. Two stories of how pitchers have sometimes been “handled” by their catchers. There is the Johnny Bench story (urban legend?) of him barehanding a pitch (Maloney, Merritt, Arrigo?) because he was trying to send a message that their stuff was lame that day. Also the Tony Pena story (not urban legend) of him being dissatisfied with Jose Mesa’s nibbling of the plate. He walked out to the mound and smacked Mesa with his glove and told him to throw strikes. Mesa went on to have his 38 consecutive saves streak.

I would never assume that bako is THE problem, but he sure as heck ain’t part of the solution. He’s ho-hum at best. Not very good defensive catcher, loust offense, and handles the pitchers? Have you check their collective record lately? Almost more pitches thrown than any other team, near the bottom is almost every category. Bako is NOT the answer. I don’t get why they ditched Ross and kept this guy. I’d have done the opposite. I guess another occupant of Dusty’s comfort zone.

Regarding John’s comment about who is untouchable on the Reds…I suggest there are no untouchables on this team. Jocketty should trade anyone if he thinks he can improve the team. The Reds have some good young players but I would trade them if you think you can get better young players in return. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. That said, I think they will keep Bruce, Votto, Volquez, Cueto, and Phillips. But who knows. This is a bad baseball team that needs major rework.

HuberTucky and I are in agreement. Bako’s the only catcher for Volquez and Cueto? Because of Dusty, who has a love affair with him, does Bako get such PT. Amazing considering he’s played for 10-teams and hits around .215!

Richard, you mean to tell me that all these pitchers are this lousy on their own? Bako ain’t so hot with the defense or ofense. C’mon man, this is the ONLY team in all of baseball that’s in 6th place!

August 16, 2008 8:51 AM | Link to this

So who are the ‘untouchables’ heading to next year? I say Volquez, Cueto, Burton, Bray, Votto, B. Phillips, maybe Kep, maybe Dickerson, and Bruce. Did I miss anyone? Everybody else up for grabs…

You people wanted a new catcher, well there was and this is what you get. I think Bako does a good job behind the plate with the pitchers.

George Grande lives in St. Louis and loves his Cardinals. You can hear it in his voice. The Cinci Reds gig is a job which he does well considering the poor play of the Reds over the years. Our man Marty is just discouraged and it shows. It is hard not to like the way the Cards play. Maybe Jocketty can bring the same talent to Cincinnati. I hope so.

A-Rod continues to prove himself to be a bit of a scumbag. This behavior should come as no surprise.

From John Fay’s blog: “Walt Jocketty says it’s up to Yonder Alonso. “We’ve made a final offer,” Jocketty said. “We’re waiting to hear from him. We’d love to have him. That’s why we drafted him.” Jocketty said Alonso, the Reds’ top pick in draft, came off his original demand “by a little bit” for the first time. Jocketty would not say if the offer was a major league contract. The deadline to sign is 11:59 p.m. Alex Rodriguez is very much a factor in this thing. Rodriguez is close to Alonso and has offered to left him live with ARod in New York and play independent league baseball next year. Alonso and his representative have not returned calls today.” Correct me if I am wrong but what A-Rod is doing sure sounds like tampering. A-Rod is an employee of a team that didn’t draft Alonso.

After watching Edwin do the Griffey saunter down to fist, you know, as opposed to actually hustling, I say trade his lazy butt while you’re in the mood, Walt. He’s not a good fit for the new energy coming on board. Clean house of the dead beats and the dead weight and all of the attitude problems. This team should ONLY consist of men who really want to play and show their love of the game.

Watching the game right now. It p!sses me off that, in the 3rd inning, Arroyo has thrown 63 pitches already. bases are loaded again (another walk to the overly-tattooed Felipe Lopez), everybody is smacking the cover off the ball, Chris Welsh says that it’s OBVIOUS that Arroyo is out of synch, and…lo and behold, where is Dick Pole, eating a double order of cheese doodles? Why doesn’t the catcher come to the mound? Why doesn’t an infielder come to the mound? Baker stands and watches? Why is it that Welsh is the only one who seems to notice? Fire Pole and hire Welsh. It just HAS to be better than the do-nothing fat boy!

Sulbaran was committed to Florida not Florida State—-that’s a big difference in the Sunshine State!

By Beard

August 15, 2008 7:10 PM | Link to this

As I understand it the Reds did give $500,00 to Sulbaran. This is about the amount of money given to a 2nd or 3rd rounder. I found this figure quoted over on redsminorleaguereport.com and they quoted it from Baseball America. The deal with this kid is he was a 2nd or 3rd round talent but told everyone who would listen that he was definitely going to school at Florida State and that is why he fell so far. Evidentially his father is a big fan of the Big Red Machine days and this was a huge reason he changed his mind and signed. Sulbaran is actually scheduled to pitch this Saturday for the Netherlands in the Olympics (as I understand it he was born in Curacao, a Dutch controlled island in the Carribean and home of Andrew Jones).

Great signing for the Reds. His talent is WAAAAAY higher than a 30th round talent, but teams were scared off b/c he had a really really strong commitment to Florida. One of the reasons he signed was b/c his father was a BRM fan, and obviously the 2-3rd talent money, which isn’t too far off from what he is. a low 90’s fastball with good life, and two secondary pitches which are already graded as average, both with the potential to be above average offerings. He has a clean and easy delivery and should generate a few more mph’s on his fb as he matures.

The Reds are impressed with young players? Really? That may happen when you give a young player a chance. Call them up now instead of waiting until they reach their 30th birthday. Since you’re so impressed call up a few young pitchers and get rid of the older and/or dead weight (FOGG/WEATHERS/MAJEWSKI). They may just show you something.

Rockieredsfan, the 400K you are seeing on the mlb.com site refers to the download speed of the video of the player. There is a 400K after the players where they have a video. If Juan Carlos Sulbaran, as a 30th round pick got $500K or even $400K to sign I fear for the future of the Reds.

By rockieredsfan

August 15, 2008 11:22 AM | Link to this

On MLB.COM under the “draft tracker” it shows that he signed for $400,000. Cannot of course verify the accuracy, but I would believe they have sources close to the situation and that figure most likely is pretty accurate.

Absolutely no way Matt Holliday would WANT to play for the Reds, a last place team. I mean, just imagine how sick you’d have to be as a player to have the Reds on your dream team “wish list.” If he did, that would be a sort of catch-22 meaning he’s not sane enough to be considered. Baseball fans would loose a great deal of respect for this incredibly talented player if he actually WANTED to play for this Bozo Baker-lead team.

Baseball America reported yesterday that the Reds were signing Sulbaran for $500,000.

By Mike-Cinci

August 15, 2008 10:52 AM | Link to this

Hal confused me today. The infamous Juan Carlos Sulbaran was the 899th pick in the draft in the 30th round. He was not picked in round 5 as Hal reported and there is no way this guy got $500K, at least I hope not. The Reds 5th round is Clayton Shunick, a right handed pitcher.

By rockieredsfan

August 15, 2008 10:07 AM | Link to this

Trust me, there is no way Matt Holliday is going to Cincinnati in the off season. First, he has a list of teams and the Reds are not on the list (according to sources close the Matt), second, he will be getting more money that 10-15 million per year, and third, he wants to be on a potential playoff/World Series team and the Reds will not be that team next year. Look for the Yankees and Red Sox to be one of his favorites in the AL and Cards and D-Backs in the NL.

Hey Fred—-thanks for clarifying that Sulbaran was a 29th rounder. Sometimes I wonder where Hal gets his information. Makes you wonder if they really paid $500,000 for him—-I think that would be a record for a 29th rounder!!

That’s clutch alright. But we won’t discuss the prior 14 GAMES in which he had ZERO RBI and just 7 hits while leaving 18 on base.

Dunn had a two-out, two run single today. Sounds like clutch to me. I don’t believe your rumor either.

By Marge

August 14, 2008 11:24 PM | Link to this

The rumor is out there that Dunn was traded to free up 10-15 million/year to get Matt Holliday from the Rockies in a trade at the end of the year for Cueto, Juan Francisco and one other prospect. Oh yeah Griffey is choking (.219 AVG, 0 HR) and getting benched. Dunn is also failing in the clutch, just like we’ve seen the last eight years in last place.

It would be foolish on Alonso’s part to go back to Miami. He definitely won’t get a seven figure signing bonus in ‘09. I think he is bluffing and will ink a deal right before the deadline.
