Does Bruce need refreshing in Louisville?

CALL ME CRAZY, call me nuts, call me demented, but does anybody else out there think maybe Jay Bruce needs a dose of Louisville and Drew Stubbs deserves a dose of Cincinnati? After Wednesday’s game, Bruce is 1 for 24 with eight strikeouts on the trip.

Johnny Cueto pumped up a good one Wednesday in Busch Stadium, giving up one run and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings during a 9-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, Cueto’s first win in four starts. Timely, though, right?

I’M NO baserunning coach, but I don’t think it is good when you have two runners picked off first base by the catcher in a three-game span, as the Reds have had done to them in St. Louis. Chris Dickerson beat out an infield single in the first inning and catcher Yadier Molina picked him off first.

And the run back to the dugout is one of the most embarrassing trots in sports.

ALL FOUR REDS runs scored with two outs Wednesday and the Reds have scored 101 of their 223 runs this year with two outs. On the surface, that’s good, right? I mean instead of making the third out, somebody drives in a run. But, hey, why not do it with no outs and/or one out and probably score even more runs? Just a thought.

LAYNCE NIX gave the Reds a 1-0 lead in the second with a home run, then when former Reds pitcher Kyle Lohse, now wearing Cardinal red, gave up a bunt single in the third to pitcher Johnny Cueto, Cueto’s third bunt hit this year, Lohse vacated with stiffness in his pitching elbow.

The Reds then scored two runs, one on a two-out single by Brandon Phillips, who then stole second, stole third and scored on Ramon Hernandez’s single.

AND I TOLD you Nix is an outstanding outfielder. Did you see that running, backhanded snag he made on the run in the sixth inning on Ryan Ludwick? Then he pushed off the left-field fence and threw a strike to second base that doubled off Albert Pujols - except umpire Jim Joyce was looking at something else and called Pujols safe. Does El Hombre get all the calls his way?

Then Nix hit another home run in the eight, a three-run blast that clinched the victory.

FORMER REDS (among many other teams) pitcher Kent Mercker filled in on the radio broadcast with Marty Brennaman on Wednesday. Mercker is one of the smartest and most humorous players I ever dealt with. He was a guy who got it.

The guy worked the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in about an hour, but it was his funny lines that I’ll always remember. Oh, and he could pitch a little bit, too. Threw a no-hitter once.

My two favorites:

Asked what he was going to do when he retired, he said, “I’m going to turn vodka into urine.” And former pitcher Chris Hammond was constantly reading the Bible in the clubhouse. One day Mercker walked by, saw him reading the Bible, and said, “Haven’t you finished that book yet?”

Oh, and one more classic. “You know you’re getting old when you run in from the bullpen and your breasts jiggle.”

SOME OF YOU questioned my use of ketchup on my hot dogs. You kidding me? I put ketchup on hot dogs, french fries, scrambled eggs, omelettes, steak (meat of all kinds) and if my wife dared to serve me asparagus I’d put ketchup on that, too.

BEFORE THE sixth inning Wednesday, the Busch Stadium fans sang happy birthday to Rachel Kohl. It was her 100th birthday. Man, she was born before both Wrigley Field and Fenway Park were built and before the Titanic took a ten-count from an iceberg.

Hal - Amen - I agree. Bruce has lost his confidence and pitchers have learned what he can’t hit. Send him down for a little work and bring up Stubbs. And why don’t the Reds pitch around Pujols!? Remember how many walks the club issued to Mark McGwire. But he didn’t beat them with shots like Albert did Thursday night.

Jay Bruce we are coming home in 1st place. He then lays an egg and goes 1 for 28 a great player. AAA team gets swept by the brew crew then Phillips says we are better then that team. how ignorant are the reds management and players. I think dusty does a great job with the talent walt has given him because it looks like a AA AAA roster

Albert, First of Pujols is the best hitter I can remember. I really hope his name steers clear of roids. 2nd, you are bashing the reds like you guys took us to the wood shed. We split with you at your place with our AAA lineup. IIf the reds can sustain through all these ijuries it will very interesting. The reds are not playing good baseball but yet they are right there in contention. Give the young reds time. This rerally isnt supposed to be our year. So Albert the great you better check yourself before you start talking all that smack. arename

Bruce needs to be hitting lower in the order, he seems to do better hitting 5th or 6th. Let Hernandez/Nix/Gomes hit in the third hole

I missed my prediction. Your AA lineup mustered 3 hits last night and KING ALBERT breaks your minor league teams heart AGAIN. A 2-5 roadtrip now lose 3 to CUbs and hit the 2-8 over last 10. Ive never seen a more punchless team then Reds Oh well theres always 2010

So what about Ken Griffey 30 years ago or Austin Kearns 6 years ago as they have nothing to do with Jay Bruce in 2009. Jay Bruce needs to play rightfield every day and work his way out of this slump.

Hal is so very right about Jay Bruce. Except for the fact that he seems to be more aggressive and is a better fielder, I am beginning to think we are beginning to see the Age of Austin Kearns-part Deux. Ken Griffey went back to the minors in the 70s and came back as the All-Star we now remember.

That was one fine post there Albert … not being a grammar cop or anything, but you do know (or is no?) there are words that have the same sound but are spelled differently and have different meanings - don’t you? Albert - Your blogging and insults don’t work when your team gets slapped around by our “minor league squad” … you might be best to shut up for awhile … even if your cards win tonight, you split at home against the Reds … all your historical comments about how bad the Reds have been don’t work either because it is 2009, not 1999, and the best your great cards team can do is split at home against the “punch and judy” Reds. You should be quiet now and let the adults talk.

Hal, Merker is great, hope they keep him around the organization. My favorite is the “Best Teammate Ever” t shirt he got for Dunn with Kent’s picture on it. A no vote from me on AAA Bruce. He is not going to learn to hit major league pitching there. However, he could platoon more in right. He is just very young, needs to study the game more mentally.

The redbirds will salvage a split with Carpenter facing your minor leadue squad tonite. We are still ahead of your punch-judy lineup and we will be playing for something in Sept while the Reds will be thinking of 2010. The Reds finish no better then 4th. Im thinking 5th or 6th. When is the last time the reds have finished above st louis 1999. you guys are losers

mike-cinci I agree I think EE can help the reds especially if he gets his bat going. they need some pop and he can provide that. EE at 3rd Hairston in mix at multiple positions. I still feel the Reds need a run producer in the OF I think wit a LF platoon/Tavaras/Bruce the Reds have one of the worst hitting OF in the ML

By Bill from Florida

June 4, 2009 4:14 PM | Link to this

EE will return from DL late this month, then rehab in Lousville, so he should be back in the majors @100% not earlier than August only to play a couple of months, 2 1/2 at the most. I think it’s time to think about the next regular 3b for the Reds.

By Mike-Cinci

June 4, 2009 4:11 PM | Link to this

EE has frustrated a lot of fans but he did hit 26 HR’s last year. He looks to be a guy who can hit 20-30 HR’s and hit .260. He is not a bad fielder though we all know he makes some bad throws on occasion which contributes to his urban legend status. If he can get over his injury he could be a real asset in the Reds lineup in the 2nd half. Looking around the NL Central the Cards, Cubs, and Reds have all lost their starting third baseman for an extended period. The Brewers are trying to find one. Maybe the Reds will get their guy back first. It should help.

Realizing that yes, we have a bunch of decent pitching right now, is anyone with me in being interested in signing Glavine? He just threw 6 shutout innings in a rehab start and gets released? Wow … Sign Glavine and move Owings to the ‘pen! Then you could sub Owings in as a PH and run him out the following inning(s) for relief.

Hal, Buster Olney stated in his blog, Reds are looking for a third baseman. Any truth to that? And is it because EE still hurt, finally realize EE cant play, or thinking about a change of positions as mentioned by Rick M.

Here is a very interesting piece on Jay Bruce including a discussion of his low batting average and his very low BABIP. http://www.kingdomeheadache.com/2009/05/learning-curve-jay-bruce.html The bottom line: Relax. Don’t panic.

June 4, 2009 1:54 PM | Link to this

No, Hal. I won’t call you crazy tho I know watching Bruce and others can be frustrating at times. But, send him down? He’s on pace to hit about 40 HR’s with 95 RBI’s. What is he, 1st or 2nd in the league or MLB with OF assists? Wow! Tough crowd. You think there’s been any talk among Dusty and Walter or Walter and his multitude of advisors about Encarnacion learning to play 1B while he’s got some time on his hands??? EEE was seen playing ‘burnout’ with Brandon Phillips a few days ago. Why not take some grounders at first and work on the footwork? When there was talk of Sheffield coming here, Dusty said he would use Sheff at 1B to help get him some AB’s and to spell Votto on occasion. That made me wonder … how does that thinking apply to Sheff but not to EEE?? I’m thinking that the less he is at 3B, the Reds will find it easier to win games without his scatterarm and below average glove at the hot corner. Besides bruising his ego, what would be wrong with EEE playing some 1B from time to time??

If I’m the manager, Bruce stays in the lineup. I might drop him to 5th, but not 6th - he’ll get thrown total garbage in the 6 hole, and he’s having a hard time laying off that stuff already. I also happen not to share the common horror about Bruce batting cleanup - I know he’s slumping badly right now, but he’s still the leading HR guy on this team, and he WILL come out of this at some point. IMO, for better or worse, this team is built around Phillips, Votto and Bruce. Jay should stay in the lineup for the same reason Phillips did when he was down.

Bruce has done little in terms of average since the month after he came up. He has a terrible eye and patience.

By Roho Radio

June 4, 2009 12:32 PM | Link to this

Bottom line: Bruce will stay. It’s hard to take a cannon out of right field. We’re also missing another stud left-handed hitter in the line up. As the “Cowboy” said last night (and I usually just listen to him and gag), Bruce probably misses having Votto bat before him. It gives him a chance to see how the pitcher throws to a great hitting lefty. Might be something to consider. If so, try Nix in the 3 hole. I wouldn’t consider him a great hitting lefty right now, but he’s swinging a solid bat…especially against the Cards. By the way, where are you and your weak comments today, Albert?

No sense sending Bruce down. Let him try to figure it out here. He needs to bat 3rd when Votto returns. He’ll see more fastballs. However, batting him 4th is another classic Dusty-ism. Dude makes out the strangest lineups I’ve ever seen…ever!

By Nick W

June 4, 2009 10:20 AM | Link to this

i dont think you send bruce down to the minors, i also dont think you bat him 2nd one day and 4th the next. I think sending him down when he is in a slump is a slap in the face. He is trying to hard to get out of the slump and needs to relax. I think sending him down now will kill his confidence. Now he needs to be batting 6th or 7th in the lineup, there he might get a chance to bat with risp and get a few hits and slowly get out of the funk he is in. Every player goes through streaks like this, give him the day off today and put gomes in right and lets see how he does this weekend.

By Jack

BABIP -Batting average on balls in play. Bruce’s is low because he does not put the ball in play much. You can get the benefit of luck when you are striking out. Not sure he needs to be sent down, but should get some days off. He has yet earned the right to play through slumps. Phillips is probably the only Red who has that right (Votto when healthy). There is no evidence to fall back on for Bruce that he will breakout of his slump. He had okay power numbers, but his batting average is similar. He needs sit for a few games and if that does not work, then send him down. Why is Bruce any different from a non-producing Dickerson, Gonzo, others who people have wanted benched. Produce or dont play. And, who doesn’t put ketchup on hot dogs, thats just un-american.

I am glad someone said it. Bruce needs to be sent down. I am a fan and want him to succeed, but he is not living up to that “natural” tag when he is striking out as much as he is and seemingly swinging for the fence as often as he does. I understand streaks and droughts, but is he just a streak hitter? I am also amazed that the Reds have done this well considering that their lineup has been full of streaky hitters and injuries. Send Bruce down until he can get his swing going, it will wake him up I am sure.

Phillips is a vetern, Bruce is only a year removed from his MLB debut. Young kids have slumps too, but there is a point where you have to question is it a slump or is he unable to adjust to Major League hitting. Anyone want to dig up his numbers starting from the point when he cooled off last year, I am sure he probably hitting somewhere in the vicinity that Brandon Larson used to hit

By Mike-Cinci

June 4, 2009 9:31 AM | Link to this

I enjoy reading Hal but I’m sure glad he is not the GM. He is not much different (sometimes) from my Aunt Molly who turned negative on players who had slumps. She was the star of the “what have you done for me lately crowd”. Bruce is having problems but if you believe he has talent you need to ride it out. Many wanted to trade Phillips in April. Stubbs will be brought to the majors when the Reds think he is ready and when he can play everyday. Bringing him up to be the 5th outfielder and to play once a week would be nuts. Some think Bruce may be a bust. Recall last year when Hal and others were calling for Bruce to be called up ASAP. They said it was a tragedy he did not make the team out of Spring Training in 2008. Some said maybe Bruce was being rushed and he needed more seasoning. I don’t know who will be proven right but he has been in the majors for a year now and if he is star material he will begin to show it sometime over the next few months or in 2010. It is possible he may only be an average hitter with a great arm. My guess is he will prove to be a good hitter, but maybe not a great hitter, in time. Good GM’s need patience. Fans like me and writers like Hal rarely have it. Then again, if everybody was patient we would not have anything to argue about.

But, wait a minute, Nix doesn’t have any proof on the back of his bubble gum card, that he should be allowed to start in the Major leagues. So, just because he and Dickerson look like they belong, doesn’t mean we should believe our eyes! Better not play anyone who doesn’t have a lengthy bubble gum card history-that would be sacrilege.Go Nix! Go Backups, who are better than starters!

Redsfandownunder you are right on about the two out runs. That is a great thing in my opinion as well. Two out runs are huge. Bruce may be struggling but how many guys has he not only thrown out but kept a third base coach from sending a guy knowing his arm in right? I think hes too much a part of the team chemistry now to send him down. The Reds need him physically and to believe mentally they are 100% behind him for the long haul. Young kid great talent. He will figure it out. Its been 10 years of losing I think we can let one our brightest future stars work through a slump.

I agree, do it now while he still has options. Maybe a wake up call, maybe a situation where he can learn to hit something other than fastballs and not cost the Reds the outs, and if nothing Stubbs could give a shot in the arm to the club, whats the worst that could happen Bruce catches Fire and Stubbs is still hitting and we have to sit down Nix. I just think back to when Adam Dunn was in his 2nd year he wasn’t hitting like he did his rookie year, maybe if he had been sent down he would have become the hitter he was expected to be instead of the HR/BB/K hitter that he ended up being

Wow BABIP, that’s impressive. How about showing some RESPECT for a Hall of Fame writer. I don’t care what his BABIP is, is he helping the team win games? Not really. Are Jay Bruce and Justin Upton related? Should I assume that since Justin Upton turned it around that Jay Bruce will do the same? If you want to compare players, how about EE? I’m pretty sure a trip to Louisville helped him get it together once upon a time.

NO, he doesn’t need to go down to Louisville. And he doesn’t need writers pretending to have a clue about what he needs either. Arizona writers were saying the same thing about Justin Upton about a month ago, then he went on a tear. Glad they didn’t send him down I bet. It’s not like he’s not making contact. Do a little research Mccoy. His BABIP (do you know what that is?) is one of the lowest in baseball. Meaning he’s simply a victim of bad luck. Get a clue.

2 out runs are being scored because they are being manufactured throughout the inning. It takes an out or two to get runners in position for the eventual base hit. We’re not waiting around for the random home run anymore. I like the new way better.

Laynce Nix for President! I’ve liked him since he came to spring training. Leftfield must be considered his to lose.
