Votto to play in Dayton, Reds win

THE CINCINNATI REDS beat the Chicago White Sox Friday, after losing to them an incredible nine straight times (and Roy Oswalt doesn’t even pitch for them) and Joey Votto will be playing tonight just 45 miles away.

It appears that Votto is headed for Dayton to play rehab games for the Dragons on Saturday and Sunday.

“I think he is leaving today to go somewhere else — I think he is leaving today for Dayton,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said late this afternoon.

Votto played an intrasquad game this morning with the Gulf Coast Rookie League Reds and, “He hit pretty good - single, double, 2 for 4, couple of walks and three stolen bases. That makes me feel good because his legs must be feeling good.”

Baker said he doesn’t care that it was accomplished against Reds rookies: “It doesn’t matter as long as he’s playing and getting some reps. That means he is on the way.”

General Manager Walt Jocketty said it is likely Votto will end up in Dayton this weekend, “But I haven’t talked to him yet to see how he feels and what he wants. But that would be the progression, a stop in Dayton this week.”

Does this mean Votto might join the Reds Tuesday in Toronto, his birth place and home? Not necessarily. But there is a non-stop flight from Dayton to Toronto at 9 a.m. Tuesday. I’ll be on it - looking for Joey.

SHORTSTOP ALEX GONZALEZ was in the starting lineup Friday, but was removed just prior to game time with a tight right elbow. Gonzalez missed nine games not long ago with a sore left oblique. I’ve never known what an oblique is, but I’ve probably pulled or stretched mine a time or two.

FOR THOSE OF US who wanted Willy Taveras out of the lineup, we all got our wish Friday. Only temporary, though. Only one game, even though he is 1 for 45 and 8 for 94. And even though Chris Dickerson led the bottom of the first with a bunt. A BUNT FOR A BASE HIT.

Dickerson had two hits that included the bunt and a double in the seventh that led to the fourth run in a 4-3 victory. Real nicke work. But will he play tonight? No. Will he play Sunday? No.

Manager Dusty Baker said with the White Sox throwing lefthanders Saturday and Sunday that he needed Taveras back in the lineup. And Dusty was a tad testy about questions concerning his lineups.

“Can’t give him too long because we have two lefthanded pitchers the next two days,” he said. “Today was a good work day for him and we know he is better than what he has shown because his record shows that. I know he’s been struggling, but…”

Baker paused and said, “Everybody jumps from one guy to the next guy on who is playing and who isn’t. First they wanted Laynce Nix to play over Chris Dickerson and now they want Dickerson to play over Taveras. It’s a long season and you have to go on a guy’s track record as well as how he is doing right now.”

Then came the rebuff.

“Quite honestly, I’m getting a little tired of justifying who I play and why and how long and when,” he said. “We’re doing as well as we can do right now.”

JONNY GOMES listened to writers talking to Laynce Nix about playing against his brother, Jayson Nix of the White Sox.

“I had a brother in pro ball,” said Gomes. “Like me, he signed with Tampa Bay. Like me he is an outfielder. In 2002 I was leading the California League in home runs (Bakersfield) and my brother was leading the NY-Penn League in home runs. Two brothers had never led two different leagues in home runs the same year so the Hall of Fame called us and told us to start collecting memorabilia for them.

“Well my brother won the league home run title, but I lost by one after I hit 30,” said Gomes. “Then the Hall of Fame called and said, ‘Keep your crap.’”

Reports out of Louisville are that Homer Bailey has come up with a new pitch, a split-fingered fastball. And he has given up only one run in his last 31 innings.

“That’s good,” said Baker. “You can add new pitches as long as you control the ones you already have first. He has the hands and fingers for it, but to really refine his skills he has to locate his fastball. That will make the split and slider and everything else something to tease them with. My reports are that he is throwing good.”

Don’t expect to see him soon, though.

“I’m pulling for him big-time and he’ll be fine,” Baker added. “They’ve already kind of rushed him in the past. Quite frankly, it would be better if nobody knows he is throwing the splitter instead of telling the whole world.”

Hello. at this point in time, recode2 and shrink output the same quality(great one for a transcoder)i use recode2 more because it is faster than shrink, that’s all but, i do use them both. p:s: if it wasn’t because it takes my little computer anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to encode a movie, i would only use dvdRebuilder/HC, i have use a few times and i can’t tell you all that there is hardly anything better. 03 Jan 2006 @ 12:29Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect. Why is Cueto falling off the mound toward first again? Is his left shoulder flying open too soon, or what? Why is Harang claiming he was making good pitches in the first and second inning, when everything looked like batting practice fast balls-until the third inning when he began showing some downward movement on his pitch?

Dear Dr. O: Baker has had dummer reasons for not playing, or playing players. Lets see, the last two days W.T. Patterson is 3 for 9; and CD is 3 for 3, with two steals! Oh, and scatter brain/arm, Hairston{hitting .236} is not the second best SS, Janish is.

I’d recommend a roster move, too many infield utility players (Rosales, Richar, Castillo, Janish and Hairston).

Once Votto is back I´d go with the following line-up: Dickerson CF, Philips 2B, Votto 1B, Gomes LF, Nix RF, Hernandez 3B, Hanigan C, Hairston SS. Gonzo and EE still in DL. Sorry for Bruce and Taveras, it´s just not working out.

Good call Professor - I think it is salary - Jay Bruce makes $417,000 and Chris Dickerson makes $400,000 ….. that $17,000 makes all the difference as to who starts and who doesn’t.

By The Professor

June 21, 2009 9:48 AM | Link to this

What gives Dusty the idea that Jay Bruce can hit lefties, but Chris Dickerson cannot? Salary? Continuing to play your best Centerfielder, in left field, when you decide to ‘play’ him, is stubborn stupidity! Put your best lineup on the field! That means, when Chris Dickerson is in the game, WT Patterson either leaves the game, or moves to left field!!! The Professor 9:44 AM, 6/21/2009

Some poster mentioned the Tigers were tough by benching Magglio Ordonez with his .270 average intimating the Reds won’t bench people. It should be noted that Ordonez is due $18 million next year if he meets a minimum number of at bats this year. The Tigers are just trying to save money.

I can’t believe Baker is getting testy. Has he looked at the OBP (career and this year) of his favored #1 and #2 hitters? Everyone and their mother is going to question the lineup as long as Taveras and AGON are at the top of it.

Jeff, stop trying to make too much sense. Dusty doesnt want to cave in to the fans, writers, he will be stubborn to a fault.

Quite honestly I’m getting a little tired of Dusty getting a little tired. Taveras needs to learn how to steal first base.

Good performances on Friday from Dickerson, Hanigan, Phillips, Hairston, Arroyo, Rhodes, Weathers, Cordero. Nice handling of the bullpen by Baker.

Dickerson should play ahead of Taveras. Don’t fire Jacoby, but it’s good that Eric Davis is helping the Reds hitters. I think Votto should make the trip to his hometown of Toronto and play him. He needs that kind of support. Hopefully he will be back strong.

A little perspective - the Detroit Tigers just put Magglio on the bench indefinitely because he hasn’t hit a home run in about a month but yet he’s still hitting in the .270’s. Even with his enormous contract they’re benching him. Track record? If anyone has a track record its Magglio. And our manager is tying himself up with Taveras’ track record. Just silly.

I am quick to bash dusty but lets face it folks this team is only 2.5 out. I do think putting WT in the leadoff spot is dumb but i bet dusty is getting pressure from up top. The key to this is Hairston. last year hairston was our spark plug because he hit the ball the other way this year he is trying to pull everything. Jerry go back to last year and be that guy. . I also would look into bringing hopper up. when he was healthy in 2007 he was a geat leadoff guy. I would bat willy 8th when he plays but the reds have to seriously consider sitting him down if he struggles. maybe he will magically go on the DL. Anyways I thinmk we all get frusturated because this division is beating each other up this year and we actually are in it.

Scott - three things, one - why would Joey Votto feel compelled to tell Hal anything in confidence? two - if he told him something in confidence, do you think Hal would write about it on a blog? three - why do you want to know the private life of Joey Votto when Joey Votto doesn’t want to share it?

well Dusty proves wherever he goes that he is not manager material, the track record speaks for itself. Also he should have Hanigan hitting higher up in the order since he is the most consistent hitter right now.

Fact - Willy Taveras has the better batting average for facing Left handed pitching. (Willy Taveras - .196, Dickerson - .091). Granted, Dickerson has only 11 at bats against left handed pitching. I would still start Dickerson over Taveras. If you wanted a R/H hitting line up versus the L/H pitching. Let Jerry Hairston Jr play CF. Gomes in LF. Adam Rosales at 3B. Here is what the Line-up should be: 1 - Jerry Hairston Jr CF 2 - Hanigan C (Yes, Hanigan, the only guy that consistantly makes contact and is hitting over .300) 3 - Phillips 2B 4 - Gomes LF 5 - Jay Bruce RF 6 - Hernandez 1B 7 - Gonzales SS 8 - Rosales 3B 9 - Cueto P

Quill, may I ask, who the hell are you, to tell me what, when, and how I choose to give my opinion on this blog? Frankly, your comment makes no sense whatsoever; since one of my points made was that Chris D. SHOULD be playing the next few days, as well; not sitting on the bench, watching WT Patterson. Perhaps YOU should read and understand what has been written, before you pop off!

Nice job Reds. Uh-huh! Long ago I said, if Chris Dickerson could add bunting to his repertoire, he could become a great leadoff hitter for the Reds. Ta-Da! Next, perhaps the unveiling of the drag bunt! With Chris’s speed and some WISDOM from the front office{Baker isn’t going to provide it, in this case}CD could be something special, as a leadoff hitter! Now, as to Dusty’s pre and post game comments—He said to Marty and Picora that CD would only play tonight—because the Reds will see ‘three lefties’ in a row! Who cares? ONLY YOU, Dusty, have determined that CD cannot hit lefties! No one else has proven that—not even the lefties! You alone have branded CD unfairly, without giving him a fair and equal chance to prove you wrong. THAT, you know is a travesty of justice. Did you see the hustle play CD pulled off in the left-Center gap tonight to keep a runner from advancing? That is FIVE great defensive plays he has made recently-right in front of YOU and W.T. Patterson! And, you are talking about benching your best CF, because your sorry team batting average is going to face some lefties???? Hell, if CD gets one bunt base hit a night—and that is all he gets—he will still be giving your team more than your pick for CF! You are being, stubbornly, unfair to CD, Reds team mates, and baseball fans! You are screwing a young man with talent; and a baseball team trying to make the playoffs. You have given no justifiable reason not to play CD tomorrow night, and beyond that. He is sparking this team and your BS about ‘lefties’ is Bull, and YOU know it is! When you have a talent like CD, who is showing supreme defensive abilities, every chance he gets to play—and if you believe that defense up the middle is very important to this team—then you have to believe that Hanigan/Phillips/Gonzo and Janish/ and especially Chris Dickerson are the best you have for that purpose. You must play this kid regularly; and for now, every night and day—Cy Young, or not!

I wish Baker would stop beginning sentences with the words “I think.” That’s just not proven out by any facts if you take a look at who he keeps batting 1 and 2 in his order. Also, remember a whole year of his incompetence with his darling Corey Patterson. Baker doesn’t think…he can’t think.
