Taveras back at leadoff, Votto bats fourth
MOST OF YOU aren’t going to like this: Willy Taveras is back in the lineup Thursday, back in center field, back in the leadoff spot.
Leadoff? Why? Chris Dickerson is in the lineup, too, but he is in left field and batting ninth. If it’s me - and I’m not a manager, just an observer - I bat Dickerson leadoff and Taveras ninth. But then Dickerson isn’t setting any offensive noteworthies, either.
Manager Dusty Baker made one slight tweak. He flip-flopped Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips, putting Phillips third and Votto fourth (his first role as clean-up this season).
THE LINEUP: Willy Taveras CF, Jerry Hairston Jr., Brandon Phillips 2B, Joey Votto 1B, Jonny Gomes DH, Ramon Hernandez C, Jay Bruce RF, Paul Janish SS, Chris Dickerson LF, Johnny Cueto P.
WAYNE GRETZKY is in trouble - and I wanted to help him Thursday. But a gigantic thunderstorm with a lightning bolt that seemed to hit about 100 feet away stopped me.
Gretzky is making $8 million a year as coach of the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes are in trouble and there is talk of moving them to Hamilton - Ontario, not Ohio.
Even though he is Canadian, Gretzky wants to stay in Phoenix. A story in the Toronto Globe & Mail the other day asked Gretzky if he would take a pay cut from the $8 million a year to $1.5 million. He said yes. Poor guy. Just $1.5 million.
So I was going to have lunch at his restaurant in Toronto, just two blocks from my hotel. Help him out, y’know. Just a three-minute walk, a bellman said. Just as I was about to leave, the thunderstorm intervened.
Sorry, Wayne.
THEN I decided maybe I’d take a trip to the top of the CN Tower, a cement pillar with a restaurant on top. Until 2005, it was the tallest free-standing building in the world at 1,815 feet. Then I found out it cost $32 to go to the top. Are they donating to Gretzky’s salary?
I’ll pass and see Toronto from up above when my flight leaves at 6:45 a.m. tomorrow.
THERE WAS QUITE a bit of noise and loud music from the room next to me last night. When I left my room this morning there was a large pile of red athletic jerseys outside the door. I could have picked one up for free, but they were dirty and sweaty.
Later I saw a gentleman folding the jerseys and asked, “What team?” Said he, “The New York Red Bulls.” For the uninitiated about the world of soccer, the Red Bulls play in the Major League Soccer - same league as the Columbus Crew.

Actually Aaron you did more than float a theory about JV, you expressed outrage at Hal McCoy and others for not being concerned with the lack of information as if they were some kind of hacks with no concern for the “real truth” … you also prattled on about being censored when other dismissed your stupid ideas and didn’t allow you to discuss them. You also took the high ground and superior attitude that only “you” were concerned with finding the truth and others were sheep being manipulated by the Reds. And to top it off, your “theory” was so incredibly stupid and moronic that the fact that you kept suggesting it as a potential reason for JV leaving the team, demonstrates you are limited as to how baseball works. You also did not respect JV’s request for privacy and kept stating his silence was some sort of proof that there was something else going on and YOU were going to find it - as if only you could “break” the code. And 95% of the blog disagreed with you. So move on …

I don’t care if Phillips went 0 for 5 last night. Dusty finally clued-in by not batting him 4th. He’s much better suited in the 3-hole. Votto hitting 4th is something every manager except Dusty would know is a given. Maybe Janish sent up a flare or wrote his name in the sky telling Dusty he was on the team. Dusty is so slow to make obvious changes. I hope Jocketty brings his own man in next year. I can’t handle Baker’s crass lineups one more season.

Ah! Classic stuff, Aaron! Dude, you’re not morally bankrupt because expressed negativity. You’re morally bankrupt because you think somebody else’s life is a reality show put on for your amusement. And it’s hi-freakin’-larious you calling other people trolls, when your little “theory” you tried to float is an absolute textbook example of the art of internet trolling. So anyway, enjoy your bankruptcy, pal - you’ve earned it!

Yeah, A.B., you ARE the man! Just ask you. At least have facts and make intelligent comments. Of course, according to you, fans are allowed to be stupid. You sure fit the bill. Just go away and let people who really have something worth sharing use this blog.

Silverquill, don’t get your panties in a bunch. This is baseball, a sport, and fans are expected to second-guess, question, worship, idolize, demonize, and generally act like fools. This blog is a testament to that reality. But then we get the “holier than thou” preachers who come along and tell us how morally bankrupt we are to express negativity or anything other than blind allegiance to a bunch of men playing a game for a living. I floated a theory on Votto. I never claimed to have inside information and I even said I hope I am wrong. Well I was wrong and I am glad. I am glad we have Joey back, but this team is broken regardless and I intend to express my views no matter how many trolls try to frighten me away. So BOO!

Aaron B: If you’d take the time to do some research you’d know the Reds do have advance scouts. I’m sure Hal loves seeing references to Fay’s blog on his blog. We’re still waiting for an apology for the goofy stuff you put on this blog about Votto. We thought you were censored on that other blog. We wish that would happen here, too.

Not only is W Taveras Patterson hitting in the wrong position; he is still playing the wrong position!!! AGAIN: His arm isn’t as strong, nor as accurate as Dickerson’s in CF/ He isn’t as fast/He doesn’t cover as much ground{he’s shorter, also}as Dickerson/His last Base on balls was 19 games ago/His average is going down—and CD’s is going up/Dickerson can bunt—WT CANNOT!!! What the hell more needs to be said on this damn blog, Castellini???

Someone mentioned this at Fay’s blog and I think they are on to something. Is it true the Reds have no advanced scouts? Our batters collective IQ seems extremely low: swinging at pitches out of strike zone, taking on pitches down the pipe. They seem to have very little idea what they are facing and what an opposing pitcher is doing. When a pitcher walks 2 or 3 batters on consecutive horrible pitches invariably the next hitter comes up and hacks at the first pitch whether or not its a strike. The whole team is undisciplined and utterly clueless with a few exceptions. Hanigan gives quality ABs but he is relegated to back up role. Janish looked pretty good early in the season but he is relegated to riding the pine as well. Dusty never plays the hot hand instead he plays the cold one thinking the law of averages is a more powerful force then a hot/cold streak. The whole philosophy stinks. Instead of going into fits of rage lets just all realize we can’t win with this current roster and manager. Our best hope is Dusty doesn’t kill any more arms and that our young players gain some experience despite being mismanaged. So I am calling it and I am sure many others will agree. June 25, 2009 — stick a fork in the Reds, season over.

If anyone hears a loud explosion, it will be my radio exploding into a million pieces against my wall, when I hear tonights pre-game version of Dusty Baker pre-game Bu* Sh*, about why his lineup is such as it is! Does Castellini and Jocketty know how pissed off Reds fans are at his managerial insanity??? We lack talent for certain; but we have better talent available than what he has been playing—and where they are hitting, and at what position they are playing, proves his arrogant stubborness! Where did you get this guy? He’s HORRIBLE!!!

I try. I try to be realistic, and I try not to join the Dusty bashers. I try to understand that Taveras hit .320 year before last, and maybe he’s a project that shouldn’t be given up on just yet. But - two runs down in the ninth inning, your leadoff hitter should be the #1 guy you would want coming to the plate, over anybody else on the roster. And you feel the need to pinch hit for him. So… one night off, and you plug him right back in the leadoff spot? Dusty, you make it darned difficult sometimes.

How long do we Reds fans have to put up with the same crap year after year. There is something rally rotten with the team and it is the coaches and manager. Willie has to have Toothpick teach him to hit. Pole can’t get BA and AH ready to start a game. What is Jacoby supposed to be doing? The owners should be ashamed. I feel sorry for Janish.

Well Hal, i can see Dusty is a joke now..I guess Taveras will leadoff and make 4 outs every game and that is ok with dusty.. GRRRRRR ands what the heck did Hanigan do to Dusty? he should be catchin tonight.. they showed Hernandez’s stats are way down of late, so get a HOT Hitter, .. oh wait.. he has to go 0-4 to play .. dang how sily of me.. Thanks Dusty. you keep this up, by the deadline the Reds are SELLERS!! IDIOT!!!!! The Fans are tired of losing and watch you manage like a loser!! YOU WIN by playing guys that will help you, NOT HURT YOU!! Taveras/Patterson/McDonald types would never be on MY TEAM!!

You’re right Hal. Playing Taveras is bad enough. Not flipping him and Dickerson in the order is virtually criminal.

There is no way Hannigan should not be playing. Hitting over 300 and doing a good job behind the plate. Did Dusty ask management to get Hernandez? Is that the real reason he gets the playing time behind the plate since Joey is back? Without question Hannigan should be back there especially since we need bats.

Jack, I agree with much of what you post. Keep it up. The problem I see with anyone, including Baker, looking down on a Janish, or Dickerson, ‘zero for four’, is the fact that he hasn’t given either one of them the same amount of time in the starting lineup, that he gave to Gonzo and W. Taveras Patterson! Until he does that, he can never say ‘I told you so’; nor can anyone else on this blog. He is yet to allow Dickerson to get comfortable in CF! It’s terrible what ‘games’ he is playing with that young man’s mind: Jerking him in and out of the lineup/Playing center, then left! He didn’t put Taveras under that kind of pressure! As far as I am concerned, DB deserves NO respect, for what he is doing!!

Janish will probably go 0-4 tonight and Baker will be able to say, “told you so,” but he will miss the irony of his table setter going 0-4 as well. Hockey, no interest, but live in person, it was a blast. And Hal, you should have knocked on the door last night, soccer players have the hottest groupies.

I guess the 2,500 people that go to the Cyclone games don’t count for anything. Back to baseball….I’ve given Baker a lot of leeway when comes to many of his decisions but he is really losing me on Tavaras. Is the only reason he’s in the lineup because of the money or is it that Baker does not want to hurt Willy’s “feelings”? Baker is to protective of his players sometimes they need a reality check. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. WE NEED MCKEON!

Ummmm, Hal? Gretzky’s team is the Phoenix Coyotes. On second thought, forget it. It’s hockey. I’m probably the only person that cares about hockey within 150 miles of Cincinnati.
