Staking claims on steaks (or hamburger)
Chicago Cubs (first place) 5, Cincinnati Reds (1 1/2 games out of last place) 2. Call the coroner. You don’t even need a medical examiner. Cause of death? Anything one can think of that goes bad for a baseball team.
IT WASN’T a fun weekend for the Cincinnati Reds, but I had a great Saturday night - a steak at my favorite steakhouse, The Saloon. It’s in the Seneca Hotel behind the John Hancock Tower.
The first time I walked into the place I saw Joe Nuxhall and George Clooney sitting at the bar. Fans were getting Nuxy’s autograph and ignoring Clooney. I knew it was my kind of place.
It has a wall-to-wall glassed-in case with baseballs signed by major leaguers and some photographs.
AND THE STEAKS are major-league. Ate Saturday with my former sports editior Frank Corsoe and his daughter, Beth. They gave the place two thumbs-up and added two pinkies up, too
Yes, the place is upscale. But not haughty. In fact, they have a complete menu of bone-in steaks and our waiter encouraged the table to pick up the bone when most of the meat is gone and gnaw on it. “That’s what our customers do,” he said. I repeat, it is upscale with white table cloths and white napkins and a large wine list.
And onion soup that is the nectar of the culinary gods.
MY FIVE favorite steak places:
The Saloon (Chicago)
The Oakwood Club (Dayton)
Donovan’s (La Jolla, Calif.)
Vic & Anthony’s, Houston
Hal’s, Atlanta (The name alone merits a plus).
And for those who wonder how I can rate The Oakwood Club over the Pine Club, it’s simple for me. With my eyes, it is so dark in the Pine Club I can’t see my thumb and fear I might slice it off with a steak knife. The place is too small and there is always a wait and the seating quarters are so cramped a big guy like me can barely squeeze into a table. And The Oakwood Club steaks are just as good, if not better.
And for those who wonder about Ruth’s Chris and/or Morton’s. Overpriced and inconsistent from city to city.
So there.
AS FOR THE Reds, they are raw hamburger as they limp home after a 0-6 trip to Los Angeles and Chicago. They might as well be waving a white surrender flag when they get off the team charter in Cincinnati tonight.
They are dead. They are buried. They weren’t a very good team to start with and you have to give credit for them hanging around so long. But now with some underachievers and a whole lot of minor-leaguers, they are barely a notch above Triple-A and there may be some better Triple-A teams out there. Would you believe Double-A?
They simply cannot compete with the big boys and now can barely hold their own against teams of their own ilk. Let’s see how they perform the next four nights at home against the last-place San Diego Padres, one of baseball’s pathetic teams.
MICAH OWINGS pitched three innings Sunday and gave up two runs, three hits and walked four. Then he left with a tight right shoulders. Earlier in the day Jared Burton was put on the DL with physical weakness and shortness of breath.
It is not that I question injuries, but doesn’t it seem to you that the farther a team falls out of first place the more the injuries mount? You just wonder how many would still be playing if the Reds were seven games in first place instead of seven games out of first place. Pain tolerance is a funny thing.
Shortly after I wrote this, Chris Dickerson tried to make a diving catch in right field and came out of the game with his shoulder throbbing. Geesh.
OK, I’M writing this in the seventh inning for there is still time for the Reds to prove me wrong. Earlier in the year when the Reds got behind, 2-1, early in the game one figured they could still come back and win.
Not now.
Now it seems as soon as they get behind, it’s over. When the Cubs went up, 2-1, in the third, I thought, “Well, this one is over.” Now it’s 3-1 in the eighth and the Reds have ONE HIT, a home run by Joey Votto, and I still thinks it’s over.
See what I mean? The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and didn’t score. Pinch-hitter Jerry Hairston Jr. flied to medium-depth center. Edwin Encarnacion tagged and tried to score and was thrown out - a dubious call by umpire Laz Diaz, bu you see what a mean. Another big chance blown up.
Then Arthur Rhodes gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth and it was over, over, over. For those who kept sniping for Chris Dickerson to play regularly, well, he has started the last four games and he is 3 for 15 with eight strikeouts before he left the game in the eighth Sunday.

in addition, I never did think BP made proper pivots on double plays when playing second base. Perhaps people are correct to want to trade BP-He is often lazy-like on tonights poor effort to turn two!

All are to blame: Dusty/Players/Talent Scouts/Jocketty/Liar Bob. No matter the level of player talent, on most every team, the decisions made about who plays and where they play, rests with the field boss-that would be Dusty-for now. During the past two years, Red observers, can see where we can lay some of the blame: The decisions to pay and play Corey Patterson and Willy Taveras, for frickin’ EVER, is a real good place to start! For two straight years Baker ignored and did not play the best CFer in the organization! In this mind, the blame begins and ends with who Baker wanted in CF. It also can be laid at his feet, about playing the wrong person at SS. I said last year, and I will say again today-it should have been BP at SS, and Jeff Keppinger at second base. It would have, IMO,improved our D up the middle{with CD in Center and Hanigan behind the plate}; not to mention better hitting from those two positions. Hanigan, I also thought should play more, before they got Hernandez{has anyone seen him in the Reds dugout since his surgery?}-Now I’d keep Hernandez for a backup at first and catcher. There are plenty more positions in which to question Baker decisions, but hell, I get tired of discussing his stupidity.

I have been a strong Red fan for over 50 years. I can not believe the poor talent this club is putting on the field. This team can not hit, will never score runs. I don’t blame Dusty, he can’t do much with this group of under achievers. The Reds remain dead.

As I said Baker & Poole have got to go. I know they have little talent but use what you got effectively. Rick Sweet could finish out the year. He at least has the BATS playing good. I would trade anybody but Votto, & get him some mental help to control his anger. Maybe keep Hanigan & Bruce. Back up the truck for the rest, including that bad attitude gold glove 2nd baseman.

Fair enough Timb. We (or maybe just me) may have to back off just a bit. I enjoy the interplay, but do not want to monopolize the board and be considered a “Matt.”

I have a feeling you are missing something, namely, I AGREE with you about Big Bob and company. They didn’t do ANYTHING to improve the team in the off-season. I was telling another commenter that it wasn’t that the Reds were stupid for not bringing Jay up, but that they had another reason.

timb, continuing silly argument. EE is hitting .200 or .202 or something. I am quite comfortable with my argument and really do not need to spin numbers when someone is that bad. What does arbitration equal….money. Liar Bob was more concerned with saving a couple dollars three years down the road than putting a better product on the field. The Rays, they called up Longoria and immediately signed him to a big money contract.

Jack, I have a feeling the Bruce thing was more about arbitration and less about Dusty, i.e. if the Reds wait for 6 weeks, then he can’t to arbitration until after his third year, rather than his second. The Rays did the same thing to Longoria. Of course, the way it’s worked out, Jay could a bargain in arbitration! You know, if you out the time Joey Votto got hits, he’s hitting .000. Man, he sucks

Every owner wants to win, but are they willing to spend when needed. Liar Bob had the chance to improve this team by spending some money on a bat, he chose not to. Dusty, same old song. He wants to play HIS players and is only willing to change after he is asked and asked (and proven wrong). Last year, Bruce only came up after a couple of months of hitting .200. This year it is Gomes. Dusty wanted McDonald. It seems every time Dusty makes the call, it is wrong. NOT trying to say that Gomes makes much difference this year, but wouldnt he had been better in left than whats been there all year? Jocketty, as its already been mentioned has done very little and made some bad signings. From Liar Bob to EE, a total failure by the organization.

MAYBE INSTEAD OF BABYSITTING DUSTY jr. AND WEATHERS jr. IN THE DUGOUT. DUSTY WOULD HAVE PROTECTED JOEY FROM GETTING THROWN OUT!!! DID THE SAME THING IN N.Y. BEFORE THE ALLSTAR BREAK!!! I HATE DUSTY!!!

I believe is was Dusty who SAT Joey Votto the beginning of last year in favor of Scott Hatteberg, and had Hatteburg not gotten off to a horrendous start, I am convinced he would still be playing 1B. Much as Jay Bruce only got the call because of injuries and Corey Patterson’s performance. And since Joey’s numbers show the same groth he did in the minors, I doubt Dusty has anything to do with that. and looking at the injured and weakening arms like Volquez, Cueto, Harang, I don’t call that much evelopment. Oh, and take EE’s 2 day 7-7 outburst away and he is .181 since his return. Short time hot, long time cold, just like he has been his entire career. Bad team, bad player development, bad fundamentals, bad management. Just BAD.

Feeling bad about the Reds ability to play fundamental baseball?? Looking down the barrel of our 9th straight losing season?? Well…this will make you feel a whole lot better… the guy responsible for making sure everyone is putting forth their best effort…maximizing their potential… Dusty’s contract for this year pays him 3 and a half million dollars for this performance!! “Cheese & Crackers”!!! It’s a good thing that the Reds dumped Mackanin so they could hire a “big name manager” Say…wasn’t Mackanin the guy who made the players show up for infield practice every day?? And didn’t they have a winning record while he was filing out the line-up?? Hmmmm…good thinking guys!!…and you don’t have any money to go out and bring in some help for this team??

Let’s give Bob Castellini credit for wanting to win. He has improved the stadium and invested in bringing back former players. The guy is a passionate owner. This team can afford a $75 million payroll. SW OH/NKY is not NY, LA, Chicago. The valid criticism of the Reds management is they have not spent the $75 million wisely and it is yet to be seen if they know what they are doing on player development. The owner wants to win. He needs Jocketty and the other baseball types to help him. It means making wise player decisions on draft day and with free agents and trades.

To Timb Perhaps I am missing something with your post. Nick Masset-Not quite two years experience in the bigs, Edison Volquez and Johnny Cueto-Cueto under .500 for his career and ERA over 4.5 and Volquez great year last year so so this and hurt and you think that is career development. Derek Lee played for Dusty after having good years in Florida including a world championship. Dusty did nothing to improve him. Joey Votto good player. With all these players post back after 5 years and look at the numbers. One season or 1 1/2 years do not make a career. All the players you mentiones have proved nothing yet and with the exception of Votto show some chinks in the armor. See Mark Pryor and Kerry Wood for improvement under Dusty.

Timb, I will certainly admit when I was wrong, assuming you will do the same. For some reason, gave EE too much credit and thought he was batting .220 when he went on the DL. Since his return, he is only hitting .274 (and going down quickly). Most of that is because of his statistical abnormality of going 7-7 in a two-day stretch. Since then, he is 2-24. And this has been my continuing issue with EE. Very inconsistent with his bad stretches outnumbering his good stretches by a good distance. Jocketty is certainly to blame on that signing. He gambled on EE and WT, and lost both.

Tom, Nick Masset. Tom, Derek Lee. Tom, Edison Volquez and, finally Tom, Johnny Cueto. Everybody here says “hi”=====As for Jack, complain about the team’s talent and rightfully so, but at least be honest about it. Don’t say the 3rd baseman’s batting average has gone down in the three weeks since he returned, when he’s hitting over .300 in that time and lifted his average from .130 to .209. With all the reasons to have disdain for the management of this franchise, you actually don’t need to make things up. You can cite CF or LF or SS. All holes at the end of last season and still holes to this day.==============KLYE, dude, you can’t go pining from Adam Dunn and his wonderful production on this board. Most of these guys blamed EVERY loss on Dunn and Griffey. Everyone. Dunn was lazy and didn’t try, blah, blah, blah. They got rid of them and had to look for new people to hate now. Dusty’s the favorite target, but EdE is popular, also Phillips and Taveras. It’s always a player’s fault and not management in general. In that Jack is dead on right. Hal said this team would finish in 5th, I believed and agreed, and lo and behold, it turns they suck. Big Bob and Uncle Walt screwed us again.

I will keep watching, and will probably go to a couple of more games this season. Why? Because I am a sap. I know it, and admit it. Summer means Reds baseball to me, and I just can’t wholly turn my back on it, as disgusted as I get sometimes. I wonder if the reluctance of Reds management to spend a little more on talent isn’t at least partially a response to what’s happened to the Florida teams over the past decade - Three World Series between them, and yet it doesn’t show up in their attendance figures. The Marlins get to the top twice, and then have to sell off their best players. The Rays will be right there in a couple of years, too - Evan Longoria will probably look mighty good in Yankee pinstripes. Seems like Cincy’s front office puts themselves in the same boat as those teams. But Cincinnati was once a great baseball town. Ther’s a LOT of history here, and I firmly believe that this area will support a winner, even in these crappy economic times. Step up, management - you gotta spend money (wisely) to make money.

Cincy people don’t have it in them to protest by NOT going to games…hell, they have to get geared up by another losing Bengal season…when these hack owners promise competitive teams by attaining tax payer supported stadiums & then refuse to deliver a quality product, people need to realize the only power they have is NOT to attend & support such rotten attempts at professional sports…it’s insane, don’t go until they produce results…

I have never been a Dusty Baker fan and never will be. It is hard making this post right after a six game losing streak and terrible play beginning with the St. Louis series in Cincy but I offer this on Dusty. To all his supporters can you name one young player that has developed under his leadership? After seeing his act here in Chicago it is hard to believe that Reds’ management hired him. The Reds need a manager who is good with young talent. I am not saying Bruce would have done better under someone else but before he was hurt Dusty sat him against Pelfrey of the Mets (right handed) to clear his head and then inserts him in the lineup against Johan Santanna (left handed). I think if memory serves me correctly Coco Codero pitched 1/3 of an inning on the recent road trip. Why? I go back to Albert hitting the grandslam off of Weathers in relief of Bailey. I have seen Larusa, Pinella, and Manuel using closers early and he certainly isn’t overworked. Oh well 20/20 hindsight is most of the fun in baseball and certainly the case in Cincinnati. Lineups never change, same players put in position to fail time after time (Travera in CF for his defense-cmon), and a pitching staff that has no leadership. If I were Reds management I would hesitate to bring up young talent with this coaching staff as they are not high on my list as teachers. So to all you Dusty supporters who bring up Dave Miley (success at AAA) and they Boones, Narrons etc. that probably forced this hiring (name manager) he is simply NOT the man for this position. He has go to go. Your mistake Bob, Walt (Wayne).

There is misery elsewhere. Since 1989 there are 9 teams that have not been to the World Series. The Reds won it in 1990 vs. the A’s. The teams not to the series since 1989 are: Cubs, Dodgers, Brewers, Pirates, Orioles, Royals, Rangers, Mariners, Expos/Nationals. Since 1975 the Yankees have won the most World Series with 6. The Reds are second with 3. There are 7 teams tied with 2 (Cards, Red Sox, Dodgers, Twins, Phils, Marlins, Blue Jays). 10 teams won once and 11 teams have won zero. In time life will get better but the Reds will need improved player evaluation and scouting.

I go to Reds games because I love baseball and the Reds. I love downtown Cincinnati on a sunny summer day. I love grabbing a burger at Rock Bottom on Fountain Square and then walking down to the In Between Bar and having a couple cold beers. I love the view of downtown from inside the stadium and looking across the river to see Northern Kentucky. A hot dog tastes so much better sitting at Great American Ballbark than it does anywhere else. Would I love to see the Reds finally put together a winning team? More than I can put into words. That does not mean that I stop watching when they do not win though. If the Reds winning is the only reason you would want to go down to Cincy to catch the Reds then you have a lot more to discover about Cincinnati, the Reds, and baseball. Being a Reds fan is frustrating, but I’m not giving it up anytime soon.

Question, does anyone on this board actually go to games, and if so, why? Why would you support a team (with your money) that continues to bring out a horrible product. You have a third baseman hitting .200. Since being “healthy” his BA has decreased. It just shows management doesn’t care anymore. You have an often injured shortstop who is hitting .207, who is in the final year of his deal and will not be back. Why is he playing? Your right fielder who was your main source of power goes down, and to replace him, you use a player who cant spell RBI. Your center fielder has been awful all year, but like last year, continues to play. It is a complete joke what the management has allowed to happen. Players are collecting their paychecks with no worries of playing well. Realizing that there may not be enough prospects to replace all these players, but who cares, try something. Would you rather lose with the current team or would you rather lose with prospects? The current team is an embarrassment, only Liar Bob and Walt eveidently could care less. Again, what reason is there to spend any money on this team?

Well if thats true, then open up the dang wallets and get us fans REAL MLB talent instead of wasting money on has been outfielders like Taveras and Patterson, Wasting extensions on players they should have traded in the off season Edwin and Bronson!!! and this year how many times did the team play short handed because the owner was to cheap to get reinforcements? BIG series between the Brewers right after the all-star break and ZERO moves and a lousy bench to face a offense that is light years ahead of the Reds!! Same goes with the Cubs and Cards!!! They each have a OWNER that shows their fans they are making moves to better their teams to WIN!! Ours acts like its no big deal and be patient and buy $1 hot dogs!! I would RATHER pay $5-10 more a dang ticket to see this franchise be winners again.. LOOSING SUCKS! We have to deal with Mike Brown screwing the Bengal fans and now BOB!! I am sick of the lies and dont feed me a renewed interest in Rolen when that should have been done weeks ago when Bruce got hurt!! and firing the hitting and pitching coaches!!! Why say a Stubbs isnt ready or a Hiesly, but a Taveras who was signed to be a leadoff hitter cant do it?? AKA Patterson!! And why is dusty making excuses instead of motivating his team?? and they BETTER NOT blame the fans for not showing up the rest of this lousy season for not doing a dang thing in the off-season before 2010!1 WINING fills the seats.. you think the Cards would if their team sucked for 10 years?? NO they wouldnt!! now they got Holiday which of course wont help this team, we dont want to hurt the future by losing prospects.. What freaking future?? its been nothing but loosing for 9+ years!! And if he walked, they get 2 free draft picks.. wow gues they forgot that part!! at least the Cardinals fans get to see what i wish this ownership would give its fans.. Why are they not playing Janish so he can get more ML experience? He seems to be batting for a better average this year and his D is terrific? They keep running that terminal flop, bedtime for Gonzo out there. He’s shot & not the future. Test Janish to see if he’s got it or not. What’s to loose? The Reds’ season is over. I second Berns in Tampa! They have ports and wine dating back to the 1700’s in their basement. Also “The Ring” in Portland and how about “Pats” in Louisville? You people who say “Trade this guy and this guy…” there are only 3-4 guys of value, the rest are minor leagurers. Which team will give up anything of value to get, oh let’s see, Edwin, Rosales, Bronson. Harang, Alex, Dickerson, Taveres, etc…. NOBODY!

Hal has said it all. To his credit he has been right from the start. The keepers..Votto, Phillips, Cueto, Volquez, and probably Bruce(team can’t give up on him yet). After that they are all expendable assuming the Reds are lucky enough to find any takers. Who would want anyone else on the roster? EE maybe, but he won’t get much. Cordero might get something but it is unlikely it will be anything of value. Harang and Arroyo have contracts that make them tough to move. They both look like over paid #4 or #5 starters. It is not a pretty sight.

For me, Pine Club’s just a bit better than Oakwood Club for steaks…on did the Reds play today? Very doubftful that WT or Dickerson would make many Triple A teams.

I am terribly dismayed at your snuff of Bern’s Steak House in Tampa. I damn-well know that you appreciate the Vichyssoise followed by the Chateaubriand (1 3/4 inches thick, 10 ounces), then a visit to the Harry Waugh Dessert Room, where a 50-page menu and fine cigar leave you totally agape. You do remember, Tampa, right?

There’s a cool note at MLB trade rumors.com that one official in the NL said the Reds would trade “anyone, but we don’t want any of their players or any of their contracts.” Cool, we stink AND we can’t make trades!

Hal, this is the time to hint to Walt. Think about next year. Get rid of dead wood this year. Play people to see if they may fit. And a new manager may perk up the chemistry in the dugout. Don’t let Dusty hear you though

Hal, I loved this entry, except for the depressing part about the Reds. The establishment reviews are A #1. Cy’s Saloon. Got it

Yep, Dickerson has looked pretty bad, awful as a matter of fact! And, as bad as he has looked recently, he’s still a better prospect in center than Willy Patterson!Problem was-he should have been there in the first place-This year AND last year!

Maybe the Reds should charter a bus back to Cincinnati. That way they would be traveling like the minor league that they really are.
