Rosales does it right, Taveras a waste of money
Many of his teammates think he’s goofy with some of the stuff he does, but if more were as dedicated and innovative as Adam Rosales the Cincinnati Reds might be better off. Probably a whole lot better off.
While some are in the clubhouse laughing over what Rosales might be doing, those are the guys who never come out of the clubhouse for anything but batting practice and the game - and sometimes they have to be pushed to batting practice.
I’m the first to say that Rosales doesn’t have talent oozing out his ears. But at least he gives it everything he has and never cheats the customers.
Want an example? Done.
NEARLY EVERY day, when the ball park is empty and nobody is on the field, Rosales emerges from the dugout carrying a bat and two baseballs.
He walks toward the outfield and stops on the right field line. He flips a ball in the air and lashes a line drive to the wall in left center. Then he hits the other ball. Then he sprints to the wall to the retrieve the balls and smacks them back to the foul line and runs after them.
“I try to do it every day,” he said. “I hit nothing but line drives so I get good extension on the bat. Just a little drill. It helps generate power. And it’s nice being out there by yourself taking it all in. I figure I’ll chase the balls then and the fielders can chase them in games.”
And he has a quick wit.
Somebody said when they used to play baseball by a graveyard and nobody would go after the ball if it rolled by grave marker and Adam Rosales said, “Yeah, I guess the ball would be dead.”
WHO IS that No. 55 on the mound for the Giants wearing Tim Lincecum’s uniform? Lincecum won the Cy Young last year and is 12-3 this year, but for the second time in 10 days the Reds are treating him as if he is Tiny Tim or Tim Conway.
They beat him up 10 days ago in San Francisco and they beat him up Tuesday night in Great American Ball Park. What’s the deal here? All those no-names that have beaten the Reds all year and they beat on Tim Lincecum like a toy drum on Christmas Day.
The Reds had five runs and six hits off a guy who had given up four earned runs in his last 33 innings.
OF COURSE, that wasn’t enough. A 5-1 lead wasn’t enough. The Giants had not overcome a four-run lead all year and only once overcame a three-run lead. But the scored four off Homers Bailey, all with two outs, in the fifth inning and it was 5-5.
MY MOTHER-IN-LAW, Lucille Tomczak, is 83 and is a huge Reds fan, seldom misses a game on TV. And when things aren’t going well, she calls my wife, Nadine - and tonight was no different.
As Bailey staggered through the sixth, she called my wife: “Why don’t they take that kid out? You can see he’s tired. Oh, never mind. Finally. Here comes that manager with that damn toothpick in his mouth.”
Easy, mom, easy.
Nadine goes to bed at 9 because she gets up at 4 to attack the treadmill or she might have received a call at 9:10. Pinch-hitter Freddie Lewis hit a ball to dead center. As he has done so often this year, center fielder Willy Taveras broke poorly on the ball, running laterally to his left before realizing the ball was over his head. It fell for a double.
Taveras doesn’t get on base. When he does he doesn’t steal when it is needed. He was brought in to be a leadoff hitter and couldn’t do it and is now batting second. And he is below average in the field. What can Taveras do? He has a nice stereo set in the clubhouse that plays loud, headache-inducing salsa music.
And holy cahooties. Taveras just hit a ground ball to the mound and trotted toward first base. Didn’t run. Jogged. Stopped before he got to the bag. Manager Dusty Baker immediately yanked him from the lineup, replacing him with Laynce Nix.
The Reds later announced that Taveras has a strained right quadriceps muscle. I don’t question the injury, but it was awfully convenient.
As far as I’m concerned, and many other fans are concerned, Taveras can rot on the bench the rest of the season. I’ve seen nothing to merit the millions the Reds have flushed down the toilet when they brought this guy in.
Baker said Taveras hurt himself early in the game when he bunted and dove head-first into the first-base bag as the ball rolled foul. He stayed in and couldn’t run the next at-bat.
“I knew something was wrong when I saw him not run, because that’s not Willy,” said Baker.
The game? Coco Cordero gave up three runs in the 10th and the Reds lost, 8-5. Cordero was snappish after the game when asked if he had a moment. “No, just put down what you wrote when I got saves in San Francisco and St. Louis,” he said.
Now there’s an intelligent response. In fact, I looked for him after his save in St. Louis, but he was nowhere to be found - probably playing cards in the dining room as he does every day before games.
Man, are things unraveling or what?
AND THE REDS and Giants aren’t just competing this week for wins and losses. Insiders say it is down to the Reds and the Giants over who might get outfielder Bill Hall, let go by the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers would like to have Aaron Harang, which would make the salary switch about equal and give both players a new lease on their baseball life.

Howdy, I’m writing comments about a article upon commenting. The best way trendy you consider is that? My partner and i see writing comments to be a continuation from the text on its own. It can both add or perhaps question the particular write-up, as well as reply a matter. You know how in a very forum carefully thread can contain 100 with posts which often ends up like a chat among some people? This a few things i see the opinion sections when, a continuing chat! Appreciate it

To think you’ve to have a brain, which if Dusty had one it quit working once the reds sign him.Maybe he early evidence of what steroids does to the brain as I hate to believe he is that stupid. Hey Hal you could have a contest on who the next willie or cory will be,knowing the reds they probably sign him for 10 million and who knows paid you a bonus. I doubt it but then anything possible. My Question is who worse REDS or BENGALS,winner get to watch tape replays of past seasons.

I sure wish people would quit believing everything they read on the back of BB cards! Please begin believing what you SEE-not what you READ. People and players CAN mature, mentally and physically. Sometimes they become major league caliber right in front of your eyes- Right after you have dismissed them as a “no talent waste of time”.

Hal thanks for speaking the truth about Taveras. I listened to Lance McCallister yesterday and i agreed with him 1505. His main thought was that the Reds need to PICK A PLAN and stay with it. At the beginning of the year it was speed, defense, and going with the young guys. I knew this year and probably next would be ugly but I was willing to take the hit for the later good. But then they pull off the Rolen trade and move 3 young guys for a 34 year old who is due to make 11 million next year. PICK A PLAN and stick to it. They have Drew Stubbs and heisey in the wings and they sign Willie T for 6 million, PICK A PLAN AND STICK TO IT. They have Roenicke, Burton, and Wood but they sign Lincoln for 4 million over 2 Years, PICK A PLAN and stick to it. They let Griffey and Dunn go so they can free up room for other players, so then they make a trade for a .250 hitting catcher who makes 8 million. PICK A PLAN. Krivsky got run out of town for doing alot less than what Jock has done and all Jock has done is make this team worse and now we have no plan, Our we rebuilding, are we going for the one year wonder what is it. They can’t tell you because they don’t know. But I do fell okay because Castellini promised us a winner. What a joke this has become and sdaly the Bengals are ahead of this team right now.

Good luck to Jim T. and Mr. Butts{name correct?} tonight. Here’s hoping your guy is successful. I’ll be rooting for him, as well; but I have this nagging feeling that CD will never get the opportunity to play full time in CF, like Dusty’s failures did. It will be interesting to see what you have been raving about. As for Bailey last night: The humidity can sap your strength and energy. Sometimes wisdom dictates a pitcher be relieved earlier than usual-but then, that would require paying attention, to the situation and weather, from the first step of the dugout!

What an encouraging sign to see at least one of the beat writers finally tell it like it is. Maybe the other one could learn from the master? At any rate, Hal, thank you for this column. What a beauty it is. The only beef I have is that you wrote a few recently saying the line-up didn’t really matter. I disagreed with that. But then today you say the T-Virus couldn’t hit lead-off. Something there doesn’t mesh. Seems to me you should also be questioning dusty’s ability to field the best team he can if you believe T-Virus is that bad. Someone needs to do it. dusty and his low IQ are embarrassing to me as not just a Reds fan, but as a human.

So the Reds don’t have enough depth in their minor league system but they trade two minor league pitchers and a 26 year old third baseman for a Rolen, who is 34? Don’t get me wrong Encarnacion needed to go but that trade was dumb. That is the type of trade you make when you are one or two pieces away from contending for a championship not fighting to stay out of the cellar. Makes as much sense as signing a closer when you don’t have starters that can get to him with a lead. Oh wait we did that too.

The only salvation that I get from the last 10 yrs. of futility is Jeff Brantley. He is a plain as an old shoe and the most knowledgable and entertaining announcer I have ever heard. Dizzy Deam was just plain corney and egotisical. Jeff is not impressed with himself and I think Marty actually likes him. He doesn’t seem threatened by him and they are by far the best two as a team than any of the others. I hope WLW sees it that way. It almost makes wasting 3 hrs. watching and listening worthwhile.

Thanks Hal for telling it straight. When Dusty had Willy and Gonzo batting one, two.I told my wife here comes punch and judy.I call Willy Ta terrible. The Reds are becoming more and more like the Bengals. They continue to make the same mistakes.Quite over paying other teams discards. The only way for a small market team to compete is to build the farms system. If they could trade CoCo they should do it now.The Cubs need a closer.I don’t care if they are in our division if they would make some reasonable offer I’d send him packing.

What black cloud is hovering over Cincinnati? What have we done to deserve the Reds and Bengals (post-1990)? We’re a major league city with little league minds running our franchises. The ownership is delusional, coaching is terrible, players are going through the motions (with very few exceptions), and fans still pay money to support this mess. I truly feel bad for men like Hal McCoy, Marty Brennaman and Dave Lapham who have to follow these awful teams for a living. As one responder said, we can tune out the games, but they have to sit through loss after loss, pathetic season after pathetic season. God bless those poor souls and other good people like us who, through no fault of our own, find ourselves in a good town with despicable franchises.

I knew something was wrong when I saw him not run, because that’s not Willy,” said Baker. Amazing. Dusty defends him to the bitter end. A good manager would say he needs some time off anyway! So we’re going to go into the offseaon and Spring Training with Baker and Tavaras still with the team? Eat their contracts. Tough pill to swallow but it’s for the best.

Here is the problem kids….its the owner! Its the owner that wouldn’t allow Jockety to get a LFer when the season started. The owner who allowed them to sign Taveras and still allows Dusty to play him. At least Uncle Carl had the guts to release guys like Graves and Rheal Cormier who were a detriment to the club. But, this has become the biggest sideshow in baseball, with Dusty being the court jester (I have to say his on-field strat. and lineups are worse than Bob Boone). Hal, your comments about Taveras are dead-on! He can’t EVEN play good defense, when Jockety preaches about pitching and defense. Now, they may trade the only pitcher that they have that has pitched well the last three or four starts and has potential to turn things around, for a has-been fourth outfielder who makes over 10 mil….if this trade goes down, I am DONE!!!! BTW….Jockety has done NOTHING to impress me. At least the Kriv-dog had some memorable moments (i.e. getting BP). At the beginning of the year we were one of the deepest pitching teams in MLB, now we have lost Cueto, Volquez, Stewart, Roenicke, and possibly Harang. Of course, the main factor of concern with Rolen has already reared its ugly head (no pun intended)—injury. All of these things ultimately fall on Walt and the Castellinis. It has become a joke!

Unraveling Hal??? Try unraveled with no chance of being “raveled” back together. Since Jack M. gave us our last winning record in 2000, this team has had five managers, four GM’s, 2 owners and zero winning seasons … the wasted money on free agents and the bad trades indicate no plan … the Reds management wake up every morning and start over every day. They say the same thing every spring hoping people buy enough tickets for the year for the owners to break even or make some money and then they drift from mid June to the end of the year losing 2 out of 3 every series … and then they start the cycle over again.

I have to seriously question the scouting that Jocketty is relying on. All of the basball world knew Willie’s OBP and field reputation preceded him but yet they throw 6 million at him. What a joke this guys is. I have never seen a center fielder misjudge so many balls and I coach high school. Those kids are supposed to misjudge it. I told my kids not watch when Willie is playing because he doesnt know the game. What a joke this franchise has become and the sad part is because of these big contracts they are stuck for next year too. So now we can say “there’s always two years from now”.

Taveras is not a good player. Whoever in the Reds front office who supported signing this guy should be fired. This team is made up of a bunch of minor leaguers. Votto,Phillips, and Hanigan are OK but the Reds are asking too much of Phillips to bat 4th and Votto can’t do much if the other guys in the lineup can’t get on base. Balentien looks better than advertised but it may be just in comparison with the other players on the roster.Regarding Bailey it is time for him to pitch more than 5 innings. The Reds are 20 games under .500 and some are worrying about leaving Bailey in too long. The guy has to learn to pitch and pitch out of jams. He only pitched 5 2/3 innings last night. Based on his 7.53 ERA which is far and away the highest on the team I’d say Homer is not ready for prime time. Potential and $1.50 will get you a tall regular coffee at Starbucks.

Willie pop up Taveras. DFA him now and send him and his 4 million for next year packing. If he is on the team Dudsty will start him in centerfield and bat him 1st or 2nd. Better yet send Willie and Dudsty packing with their 7 million that they will get for next year. Walk out on the street in Cincy and find any circus clown to manage this team. Unreal to keep either of them around.

Will someone please order Dusty to leave Taveres off the lineup card!! (Hey Walt!!!) It’s obvious to everyone except him that there is no place in the future of this club. Nix in left, Dickerson in center, Gomes in right. leave them there except for occasional breaks. Let’s see if any of these three will play a part in the future of the team. The only way to find out is to let them get at bats. I think it is safe to say Dusty has lost the ability to effectively manage this team.

We pulled in a manager whose last performance was losing over 100 games with a major market team. That can’t be easy to accomplish. I haven’t seen one instance where he made this team better. So we want to trade Harang, a guy who is going to give you 200 innings for a guy who was sent down to the minors and the pay is equal. The only way Harang should go is if we can lose all of his salary and then hope we can find a guy to take his innings about about a quarter of the price. That leaves us 9 million to try to get some quality on the field every day. Judging from his Sutton for Keppinger trade I have no confidence in Walt’s eye for talent.

No way is Hanigan a backup in any league! He does too many things well, defensively, to be a backup. He has thrown out 46% of runners attempting to steal this year{including tonight’s throwout of Winn-only his{Winn’s} second time this year}. A terrific percentage. Hanigan’s 1.9 seconds throws to second base is nearly the best in the majors. His great hands behind the plate, stopping what would, otherwise, be wild pitches, is phenomenal. All he needs to do is hit .250; and then handle the pitching, throw out their mistakes, block pitches in the dirt-and he’ll be right up there with the best in the league. Show me any other catchers who approach these stats, and I’ll show you a starter! Catching duties far outweigh anything accomplished on offense. That will be a bonus. The Reds would pay a fortune to get what they already possess! He hits the ball sharply. His hitting will be OK. He will be our starter next year.

Hal- Listened to the game tonight. A game where we had a lead in the 6th inning. Why did Baker leave Bailey in so long? The Reds had a 5 to 1 lead with one out in the 6th. Given the fact that Bailey is very inconsistent. Why would Baker leave him in when he could have sent in relievers to seal the deal and capture a win. We got 5 good innings from Homer. Why not go with that. It goes a long ways to build his confidence ? Baker must think that Bailey is another Bob Gibson. I just don’t get it. Help !

Hal, thank you for telling it like it is about Mr. Out and no hustle Taveras!! also this was said by Walt tonight:“The plan is … we have a plan, let’s put it at that… The plan is to try and develop quality young players and build a foundation for the organization for the long-term, not just the short-term. “We’re also trying to be fair to our fans and be competitive as much as we could this year. I think we were until we were hit with a lot of injuries in the middle of July. We didn’t have the depth to compensate for it. “The plan is to continue to sign quality young talent and develop it to the major league level. That’s simplifying it. But that’s the plan.” John Fay asked “Do you think you can compete next year? “I don’t know,” Jocketty said. “I don’t know what the competition will be next year. I would hope we were competing this year until we got hurt.” blaming all this mes including Taveras on injuries?? How many times did they play short handed becasue they refused to bring anybody up?? and to say he wanst to be fair to the fans?? then why wait till the team is 10 games out before making a trade?? Like Rolen should have been here 4 weeks before the deadline and another bat(Holiday) to replace the idiot in CF named Taveras.. THAT would be fair to Reds fans.. not excuses why you keep losing year in and year out!!!

I’ve tried not to jump on the “Dusty Bashers” bandwagon but come on, he pitched too good to let him stay out there and let the Giants tie the game. He should have been out after the walk at best, at the absolute worst after the double. I don’t understand that and I don’t understand his reasoning for benching a hot player and playing someone who is “going to get hot soon.” He out thinks himself and over manages way too much.
