Phillips: “I hate the Cardinals, hate ‘em”

Before we dissect the Chris Dickerson-for-Jim Edmonds trade with Milwaukee, listen to some quick words from Brandon Phillips before the big, Big, BIG three-game Cincinnati-St. Louis series.

Phillips fouled a ball off his shin Saturday in Chicago and missed Sunday’s game. But he was in Monday’s lineup and said, “I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em.

“I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals.”

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, of course, volleyed things back at Phillips by saying, “We win the right way and we lose the right way. We’ve received a lot of compliments over the years that when we lose we tip our caps and when we win we keep our mouths shut. That’s my comment.”

But he added more: “I don’t think that will go over well in his own clubhouse. Phillips is ripping his teammates — Scott Rolen, Miguel Cairo, Russ Springer, Jim Edmonds — all the ex-Cardinals over there. He isn’t talking about this year. He is talking about the way we’ve always played and those guys are old Cardinals. Tell him he’s ripping his own teammates because they are all old Cardinals.”

More likely, Phillips was talking about a couple of incidents when La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan complained about baseballs in Great American Ball Park being too slick because they weren’t rubbed up properly, or the time they complained about something on pitcher Bronson Arroyo’s hat.

OK, JIM EDMONDS for Chris Dickerson. Why?

“Why the move? We feel that Edmonds will add veteran playoff experience,” Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. “He is a guy who has had a good year with Milwaukee. Actually, we thought about signing him over the winter when he was available, but we didn’t and kind of regretted the fact we didn’t. He didn’t play at all in 2009 and we thought we had enough outfielders, but he showed us he can still play while he was with Milwaukee. You saw him beat us once the last time we were there. He’ll help us in a lot of ways.”

FOLKS WILL QUICKLY say Jocketty is gathering a Cardinals Alumni Chapter in Cincinnati because he has acquired Scott Rolen, Miguel Cairo, Jason Isringhausen and now Jim Edmonds.

Before one makes that an issue, consider that the Cardinals have six former Reds — Jason LaRue, Felipe Lopez, Aaron Miles, Dennys Reyes, Ryan Franklin and Kyle Lohse.

“These are guys who I know and are still good players,” said Jocketty. “They can contribute. Everyone we’ve acquired has done a good job and we think Edmonds will do the same. This is a move to give us a better chance to win now.”

Edmonds is 40 years old and Dickerson is 27, but there is a method to Jocketty’s jockeying.

“Dickerson has been back and forth with us and has had a lot of injuries,” said Jocketty. “We have some younger guys (outfielders Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs, Chris Heisey) who have moved ahead of him. This is something that in the short term is the best fit for us.”

AND DON’T anybody go into apoplexy because the Reds made room for Edmonds by optioning pitcher Travis Wood to Class AAA Louisville. He’ll be back shortly. Because the Reds have off days Thursday and next Monday, Wood was going to be skipped anyway.

“He will go down (Louisville) and make a start there while missing one here, then if all goes well he’ll be back,” said Jocketty. Manager Dusty Baker said Wood’s next start wouldn’t have been until Aug. 18, but now it will be Aug. 19 in Arizona.

“He has pitched terrific, done a great job, but the way the pitching is set up for the next 10 days he wasn’t going to get a start,” said Jocketty.

Edmonds is battling soreness in his Achilles tendon but played 73 games for the Brewers, hitting .286 with eight homers and 20 RBIs. While he was in Monday’s lineup in center field, he isn’t expecting to play every day, nor is Baker planning to use him every day.

Dickerson tore it up on a rehab assignment at Class AAA Louisville, but folks forget that with the Reds this year he was hitting .205 with a .222 on-base average with 19 strikeouts in 44 at-bats.

“Coming right in here to play the Cardinals, it is going to be a little nuts,” said Edmonds. “I’m looking forward to the challenge and I appreciate the respect I have from the guys on this team. I’ve played against them for so many years and this seems like a real good group of guys that is really talented. I’m just coming here to help out with some veteran leadership, play when I can and help the guys try to win.

“My Achilles tendon is still sore, but I’m dealing with it. I’ve talked to Walt about it and both he and Dusty know about it,” Edmonds added. As far as being accepted in Cincinnati, Edmonds said, “As long as it isn’t as bad as it was in Chicago, I’ll be fine. The media killed me there until I hit my first home run.

“I love hitting in this park, love to play here,” he said. “They have great fans and it’s a good city. I don’t care about playing time. I just want to play when I can and help out — whether it’s pinch-hitting or playing every day or playing two days a week. All I care about is playing a little bit and helping out.”

BAKER IS HAPPY to have the extra leadership body and said, “You have to do what you have to do and I think it’s great for Dickerson and it is good for us to get Edmonds. You see how we mix-and-match everybody here — who I think we need that day, whether it’s more of a defensive outfield, offense and defense, right or left, match-ups against pitchers, who is good against righties or lefties, or if one guy hits one pitcher and another guy doesn’t. Nothing is 100 percent, but you go on numbers and how some guys are swinging.

“Like Laynce (Nix),” said Baker. “He is swinging better than anybody we got, except maybe Joey Votto, so that’s why he’s playing (in left field in place of Jonny Gomes). And it gives me some options late in the game - pinch-hitting or better defense.”

On the brink of playing the biggest series in the history of Great American Ball Park, Baker said he wanted his team to just keep playing the way it has and he was asked if he watches for any changes in his team’s approach in a big series like this.

“I know ‘em when I see ‘em. I don’t look for any changes or signs, I just see ‘em,” he said. “I don’t go looking for them until I do see ‘em and I act accordingly. That’s all. I don’t want to create signs. We’re young, but we have a lot of guys who have been through this before. What do I tell ‘em? Nothing. Just play.”

Baker and I agree thoroughly on what this series means.

“Even after this series we have 6 1/2 weeks left and that’s a lot of ball,” he said. “This is just one of two chances (the Reds and Cardinals meeting for the last time in St. Louis in early September) left to do your own business and not depend upon anybody else. After that, we don’t go head-to-head any more. All I know is that this is great for the players, great for the city, great for the organization, great for everybody. Being in the race like this is what I’ve missed the most the last four years.”

ANOTHER ITEM of interest: Aaron Harang.

Harang, on the DL with a bad back, is scheduled for a simulated game tomorrow. Then he plans a mild bullpen workout Friday and hopes to pitch a rehab game over the weekend in the minors.

And if all goes well, he wants to rejoin the team next week on its West Coast trip. One problem needs to be solved, though: Where does he fit? Certainly not in the already filled up starting rotation that already has a waiting list.

Not being a life long Reds fan I cannot share much educated data. They are picking a lot of high priced players ( Cardero 11m, Rolen 6.5, Harang 12.75, Cabrera 4m, and on again off again Phillips 11m. Paying Cabrera 12m is a stretch so is Cabrera 4m. Pick up Janish and Hernandez and all the 400k players available and see who can or wants to play.

Hey Cincy fans ..No disrepect but what happened to all your fans? Do you guys realize your in a pennant race? “Hello” Is anybody home? By the way what a bunch of wimps in the diamond box with your cell phones, hot dogs, and sun tan lotion. The beers would have been flying in St Louis… Who taught you guys how to fight with the kicking ? If I were you I would dump Phillips to the Cubbies ASAP because he just handed St Louis the divsion plaque.. When I was a kid growing up in St Louis all we did was watch and play baseball..Our gradeschools here in the 70’s would bring in TVs to watch the world series and it wasn’t even the Cardinals. I still remember Sparky running out to the mound for Seaver and Earl Weaver running out for Jim Palmer for the Orioles. The Big Red machine needs to turn back on.. The point Im making is that if you hate the Cardinals you hate the Reds and you hate baseball as well…You guys have a great team and it’s to bad a guy like Phillips ruined it.. Good night!

You must be kidding…Asking a DDN reporter{journalist is too professional sounding}to withhold comments or information, when they can let the whole world know they were the one’s who ‘created’ a story, is expecting something they seldom do! McCoy and Day even went on TV to brag about their reporting. Down thru the years it has happened, and McCoy isn’t the only one still lurking{as opposed to working} there{At DDN} who isn’t above doing it. Reporters, one step below Lawyers.

Okay, Hal. As far as I understand, you and Jim Day were the only 2 people standing there as Brandon made his nasty comments the other day. So, the only way that this whole mess hit the media was that you announced it to the world. Please correct me if I am wrong on that, but that is how Day made it sound. Brandon was certainly out of line for his comments, no doubt about it. But, you created the stir by publishing it. Shame on you for that, some things are better off not said, and I think it blew that Cardinals series. Next time you hear ugly words that could harm our team, do us all a favor and keep it to yourself.

Brandon is right, maybe some of you are taking umbrage with his wording but his point is correct. The Cardinals, from the team to the fans, act like they have automatic dibs on the NL Central every year. And when they another team decides to compete and the Cardinals fall behind, what does STL do? B***h and moan.

I love it. I love the competition that is being shown by both sides. I love that BP is lighting a fire under this team. And I love that Cincy and St. Louis are finally coming out to be rivals. There is nothing wrong with a little donnybrook every once in awhile to fuel the fire.

Well, It’s nice to see Cincy fans excited about something besides football, but really… do you actually think that Cards fans are worried about you? It is awful funny how Phillips waited all of these years to get this hatred off of his chest after getting it handed to him by St. Louis all of these years, but now he becomes the extra incentive to wipe them out of contention. Jockety is great. Rolen and Edmonds are great… but St. Louis is still, has, and always will be the better franchise. The truth hurts the Cubs, too. You guys used to be the classier losers, though. Thank Phillips for taking that away from you.

For those who dont appreciate Cardinals fans reading this blog: McCoy is a Hall of Fame writer. Most true fans appreciate good writers. Personally, I like to get local opinions of the game prior to the Cards starting a series.. However, posting to the blogs is not a normal item for me. For those who think Cardinals fans are without class: Ever hear the phrase about 1 rotten apple spoiling the bunch. You do not see most of the good ones on here posting. Yes, we can be cocky, but Cards fans appreciate good games. The Reds are playing very well. The Cardinals: so-so (but still in the race, thankfully) Other Randomness: Both teams are in a tight race. At this moment, the Redbirds are ahead based on %. That could open or close with tomorrow, or even in the next few weeks. A lot of games are left for both teams before the playoffs. It usually (at least that we see) is not players who hate other teams so much as media and fans arguing it out. Both teams have good players and managers. Carp is excitable and a competitor. I think Phillips is trying to be the competitor without the gruff manner Carpenter can show. Dont get me wrong… I dont want a trade for Phillips (and I think bad things would happen if he came here, we are forgiving—but he crossed the line, to me at least). Complaining: If you think someone is cheating, you point it out. If the ref agrees or disagrees, they get to make the call. Fights: What fight? No punching, just talking and some shoving (and let MLB decide about the kicks). Agree… Disagree… Deal with it. Now for the 11 AM game tomorrow (Wed)

BP’s quote is disrespectful to the game. Tonight’s spectical was disrespectful to the game, but expected to defend the team. Votto’s snub of the Cub was disrespectful. A true Cardinal fan would understand his comment, but respect for the game would have overridden the dislike for the Cubs. The personal attacks show the lack of class that has invaded baseball. McGwire didn’t deny using steroids, he refused to answer the Congressional questions. He used when it was popular in baseball to use, not when it was illegal to use. Still not a good choice. Will cost him HOF. Since, he has admitted and come clean. Pujols does not use. He works hard for his successes. Rolen and Edmonds are excellent players.I enjoy watchingthem no matter which team they are helping. I hope that tomorrow both teams will play well and give their fans a game they can enjoy and not an embarrassing situation. If BP’s comments and the brawl tonight was not embarrassing, then you have little respect for the game and you might want to introspect to understand why. The players owe the game, not the game owing the players. Caps off to the great players who played it right, Biggio and Bagwell, Ripken, Jeter, and Gagne, are a few who come to mind. For Love of the Game, show respect for baseball or let someone else who loves the game take your place. The Reds and Cardinals have made this season fun to watch. Both have been in first place, now are tied again. GO CARDINALS!

I am glad though that the Reds are a good team agin. It adds to the list of games I look forward to wathcing. Good luck to the Reds and their fans. You deserve a winning season. From a writer in St. Louis: Good afternoon from the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Earlier Tuesday I had the chance to interview Reds GM Walt Jocketty on my 101 ESPN radio show. First question: what was Jocketty’s response to the hateful comments made by Reds 2B Brandon Phillips? Phillips said he “hated” the Cardinals for their “bitching and moaning” and called them “little bitches.” Jocketty’s response: “I didn’t read it. Somebody told me about it. But I don’t think it was probably in his best interest to do that. You know, it’s not a smart thing to do. And I’m sure we’ll have a chance to sit down and talk about that today. But it’s just, you know, I don’t like things like that. It just doesn’t do any good.” -Bernie

Yes, I live in “The Lou”, get over it. Just kidding. As much as I love the rivalry my Cardinals have with the baby bears, I think the growing rivalry we have with your Reds has the makings of a great rivalry. Both teams are playing good baseball this year. Both teams are at the top of their division. There are former players on both teams. Kudos, by the way, to Rolen for finding his power again; I always have enjoyed watching him play, even when he was a Philly. Phillips may have inadvertently helped kindle this growing fire that is the brand new Cards-Reds Rivalry. I wish nothing but the best for your team in the future and look forward to a long, hard fought battle for the central for years to come.

scott you are obviously delusional and try to find racism in every situation first off the main reason for the decline in African american players in baseball is most closely related to accessibility to baseball fields in the inner cities also in connection with the immediate bigger payday that comes with basketball and football, after one year of college you can receive a huge payday from both football and basketball where as in baseball its a longer road to prosperity in most situations. secondly, like everyone else has tried to say its not what he said its how he said it. it shows immaturity and a lack of respect for the game itself, whereas joey votto still showed respect for the game while expressing his opinion about a select group of fans. on a separate note the reds are currently in first but they are tied with the cards in the lost column which is the number you should be paying attention to in the last two months of the season and finally the last 1 1/2 months of the season should be good and personally id like to see both teams make the playoffs just with the cards winning the division… GO CARDS!!!

I was impressed that BP didn’t name names. He kept it generic, saying the Cardinals. He just needs to know comments you make to teammates need to be softened for the media and our ears. Although, it wouldn’t have bothered me to hear the same thing from the other team. And you know, in the privacy of the locker room everyone says it.

Being a die hard Cards fan, I am used to hearing and dishing out a bit of trash talking. It’s fun when it comes to the rivalries - Cards/Cubs, Cards/Houston, etc. This is the first year in a long time that Cincy has been in the race and I for one am happy to see that happen for them. So it’s no surprise that there is a rivalry with the Cards/Reds this year battling it out and it’s fun - trash talking and all. The only problem I had with Brandon’s comments were that they were so personal in nature and intent. They were personal attacks as opposed to “we are going to wipe the floor with them” or “they don’t have a chance this year.” To publicly declare that you hate a team, fine. But it wasn’t really the team he was referring to, it was the individual players and that was just classless. It also reflected poorly on the Reds organization as a whole. Trash talking is fine. The Reds have paid their dues and have earned it. But BP’s comments to the press were just classless and poor sportsmenship behavior and unfortunately for the Reds, will be associated with their organization. I’m feeling Milton Bradley deja vu. The Reds deserve to bask in the limelight they have worked really hard for and so greatly deserve this year. Shame on BP for taking focus away from that.

Also Hal, you lead off with this bomb of a comment from BP and then move on to talking about some other mundane stuff. Did you not realize that printing this quote in full was going to set off a media frenzy in St. Louis and Cincy? All I know is that Phillips better bring his A game today and tomorrow.

Honestly, Phillips comes away looking like the schoolyard b***h after these comments. I was fine with Votto’s comments about the Cubs, but BP crossed the line on this one. He better back it up with his play today and tomorrow. If the Cards sweep the series and BP plays poorly, he may have the Cincy media after him next. I’d prefer if BP let his play do the talking…and learn how to run the bases too.

Scott, as I said: I am only speaking for myself and my opinion. It has nothing to do with race and the two comments are not even close to being the same…Votto’s saying he doesnt like Cubs fans, and didnt congratulate a Cubs player is no where near the slights of Phillips calling a team and players B**tches…It’s not what was being said that is so vastly different, rather HOW it was said that has my ire…and further more: you dont know me, or I you, so, dont take or make anything personal…Go Reds!

do any of you mental midgets really think that Phillips comments have anything to do with the outcome of the game. Or that the reds or cards are trying any harder because they don’t like each other. Try this on, the cards are in second place the reds in first by a game, only six games left between them, every game counts in the standings, the team that doesn’t win division may be out of the playoffs. Now I’ll ask you all do you really think BP’s comments made the difference in how hard the cards or reds played.Sounds like a grocery store rag story. LMAO! Look how many post for this article. Hey All, my problem with Phillips shooting off his mouth - again! - is that typically, he tries too hard after his gaffes, and ends up going 0-for-ever and swinging outta his spikes…As far as the Cards, I have never liked em; but, that’s more of a rivalry than a personal dislike…But, as with OSU and Meechigan: We need the Cards to be a good team, as much as they need us to be a good team to give our Division some respect! I like the Edmonds move, and I’d like to see an outfield of Edmonds, Heisey, and Gomes…there’s pop, and a good OBP there, plus some serious RBI potential, although Bruce’s D- in Right would be missed…Go Reds!

I don’t recall a player so blatantly asking for a beanball. If Phillips knows the Cardinals as he says he does, then he surely knows he just bought himself a fastball between the numbers. The only intrigue left to this story is when will it come, and will his teammates actually have his back.

Phillips isn’t saying anything I didn’t say myself following LaRussa’s slick ball comments from the past couple seasons. BP is probably the gold glove winner this year. He IS producing. And he had the guts to call them out before the series not mouse around and wait to see how he hit during the series. Love the fire and intensity in August in Cinci. And Cards fans, check the standings, you’re still in second place.

By David

August 10, 2010 7:20 AM | Link to this

The Dickerson-for-Edmonds trade wasn’t as simple as Jockety made it - there is some psychology involved. The Reds needed a good argument to sit Drew Stubbs, and possibly Jay Bruce, for long stretches in the pennant race, as neither produces with any reliability. Dickerson wasn’t a good enough argument - just off the DL, had done little all year. So you bring in a veteran outfielder, multi gold glove winner, experienced in pennant races and post-season. Now Stubbs (and Bruce, when it’s his turn) has no argument for sitting while the veteran guy plays.

My opinion of Phillips…..just went through-the-roof. I like this team and the way they play the game, the confidence they have and the fact that they’re unapologetic for it. He’s right, the Cardinals do just b***h-b***h-b***h about everything. They’re the most arrogant, hypocritical team I’ve come across. The way Pujols admires every bomb he hits, the way they play dirty and then complain about anyone playing dirty..I think it was Carpenter who said that a pitcher should never pitch inside on another pitcher if “he’s not good enough to not hit him”. Well, a week later he hits Gallardo on his throwing arm. That’s forgetting the pure joy I’ll feel when Pujols finally gets busted for roids. Hard to have a trainer get investigated for trafficking(oh, and did I mention long time friend) and not draw the logical conclusion. Anyway, thank you Mr. Phillips. You speak for MOST of baseball.

I happen to be a STL fan(born and raised there and always a Cardinal fan) who lives 35 miles from Dayton who subscribes to and reads the DDN every day, so why should I not have a “right” to read these blogs and express my opinion ? Phillips comments were not very professional and rivals the comments by Votto after the All-Star Game when he would not complement Marlon Byrd after a great defensive play, “because he doesn’t like the Cubs.” I think that part of being a professional is behaving in a professional manner, and certainly the above comments were not only unprofessional but represent poor sportsmanship. YOu say: “Because the Reds have off days Thursday and next Monday, Wood was going to be skipped anyway.” I have to ask “Why was he goingto be skipped?” Right now, he’s handsdown the Reds best starter. Hehas pitched the best in close games (his rare flareups have come with bigleads)…and with Carpenter pitching tonight, it was a goodbet the Reds would not be scoring often. Why wasn’t it Leake who got sent down and skipped? He’s 2-4 with a 6.67 ERA in his last 10 starts, surrendering 77 hits in 56.2 innings, while Wood , in his 8 starts since coming up, is 3-1 2.65 32 hits in 51 innings. Almost a complete mirrort image. There’s a difference between a fun rivalry and shooting your mouth off because you feel inferior. There’s no need for stupid comments like that. Cards fan here. First of all, Hal McCoy is a terrific writer and I don’t see a problem with opposing fans checking out his blog. Unfortunately, it will probably get ugly in this case because even though there are legions of normal Cards fans around the country, there is a loud and embarrassing vocal minority that likes to ruin the party. That said,my reaction to Brandon’s comments is that I think it is good for the game to have a competitive rivalry where the teams don’t necessarily like each other. Baseball needs a little of that right now. I do think he went too far with his choice of words, but he and his teammates will be forced to back them up on the field. If it backfires, maybe he’ll think twice before running his mouth again. If the Reds outlast the Birds and win the division, it can be a rallying point and will build on a potentially budding rivalry. I wish Reds fans luck—you guys deserve winning baseball again, even if I hope it’s no better than 2nd place.

Matt - fine, fair enough. But, is that grounds to call Hal stupid? Okay, that was my point. Nothing’s wrong with Walt bringing in his own guys, especially considering how well they played for him in St. Louis. As for those former Reds the Cards have, I wouldn’t want any of them back, except maybe Lopez. Honestly, it doesn’t matter at the end of the day. Seriously though the only team i hate is the brewers cause of the antics and the cubs cause well theyre the cubs but if we dont make the playoffs and the reds do it wont be the end of the world. As long as the yankees dont win again i could give a cr@p less.

Who is Brandon Phillips? I mean, what has he ever accomplished? He talks as if he has won a few MVP’s, or maybe been to the playoffs before. But he hasn’t… he’s just another cocky player who is all about Brandon Phillips.

Way to mention all the former Reds that are now on the Cardinals that were never Reds under Jocketty to defend the acquisition of all the former Cardinals who are now Reds that were ALL Cardinals under Jocketty. Way to link two things that have nothing to do with each other. No wonder you write for a paper in Dayton. Even the bad writers in St. Louis aren’t that stupid.

The first time in years the Reds are any good and they are already running their mouths. They will be just like the Brewers. One, maybe two good years and then they’ll start to tail off again.

I’ve got a great idea. Let’s take a rookie pitcher pitching in his biggest game as a pro and never visit the mound after giving up 4,5 or 6 base hits to start an inning. Where were the coaches? And why pitch to Pujols with an open base? Now you have Leake sitting there shellshocked. He’ll bomb his next start. Horrible coaching.

I am excited about the Edmonds acquisition. Dickerson does not figure in the Reds’ future, and Edmonds will “show the way” to Stubbs, Heisey, and Bruce in the same way that Rolen has had an impact on Phillips. Jocketty has enhanced the team for this team w/o hurting its future.
