Gomes says he wasn’t singing about Wainwright

I have removed the first paragraph of my previous blog where I quoted Jonny Gomes as singing as he arrived at the clubhouse Wednesday morning about St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright.

He denies he was singing about Wainwright and said he was singing something else. I’m not the only one who heard ‘Wainwright’ in his song, but I won’t throw anybody else under the bus.

Maybe my 70-year-old ears are hearing things, but at the time I didn’t know about Wainwright and wondered to what Gomes was referring. I heard about Wainwright’s injury a few minutes later in manager Dusty Baker’s office.

I thought the Gomes thing was humorous, with no malice intended by Gomes. That isn’t Jonny Gomes. He is one of my favorite people and I would not do anything to hurt him. It seemed it was Jonny’s way of saying the Reds wouldn’t have to face one of the best pitchers in baseball and he’d never wish injury on any player.

If I had it to do over, I would ignore what I “thought” I heard - as did a couple of other people.

I left Goodyear a few minutes after leaving Baker’s office to catch a plane home. I wrote the blog in the Phoenix airport and didn’t realize the furor it caused until I got home Wednesday night.

I know Gomes meant nothing malicious and if says he was singing something else then I have to believe him and thoroughly regret writing about it.

For a really good story about Gomes check out FoxSportsohio.com.

Dear reds authority, you need to grow a pair and respect your elders. I highly doubt you are even in your high schools hall of fame. Hal McCoy has got to be one of the best writers ever and actually has the balls to write how he feels. Until you are on his level of excellence, shut the h* up! Thanks, Emccoy

Further, Hal McCoy is single-handedly responsible for ending the career of a major leaguer. Jason LaRue was a casualty of Johnny Cueto’s kicks which were brought on by the irresponsible reporting of McCoy that caused the CIN-STL fracas. Were it not for McCoy’s reporting clubhouse banter and off-the-cuff remarks by Reds players (i.e. Brandon Phillips), Jason LaRue would still be playing the game today. Shame on you, Hal McCoy!

Got one remark for this “Reds Authority” guy: I’d like to buy him for what he’s worth and sell him for what he thinks he’s worth! From that profit would come enough money to send every Reds fan to spring training with sufficient funds remaining for the optrectomy surgery this genius direly needs. It appears his optic nerve is connected to his anus which gives him such a shi**y outlook on life!

Hal, you just retired again from being a “reporter,” and revealed yourself as a back-slapping, jock-sniffing clubhouse buddy of the players. So you’re saying he didn’t say it? Which report are we to believe?

By Florida Buckeye

February 26, 2011 9:51 PM | Link to this

Hal, I find it amazing that players are constantly saying, ‘I didnt say that’ or ‘It was taken outta context’ or something along those lines…if nothing else, since the advent of twitter and its rising popularity, fans are realizing that our sports heros are NOT the geniuses off the field that we might have otherwise thought. They constantly say and do things that come across as idiotic, and then, pass the blame on to others. Hal, keep reporting what you see and what you hear, and let the chips fall where they may: I for one, would rather hear/read the truth, than some PC Spindoc’s view on what ‘should’ have been said, or what I ‘should’ have thought about it…lastly, I don’t think it would have been all that bad, or unexpected for a Reds Player - after last year’s bad showing against the Cards - to have had a little excitement at a hurdle being removed from their path to the playoffs!

Carol: Hal’s days are numbered. He has embarrassed himself, the DDN and Reds players and staff these last couple of years. He is single-handedly responsible for the St. Louis fracas that got several players and 2 managers suspended. He should have stuck to covering the GAME and not publishing inflammatory statements/actions by players. He has greatly tarnished that HOF distinction. Better leave now, Hal, before it’s too late!

Seems to me anyone who would think Gomes was “celebrating” an injury to an opposing player is probably one who would do such a thing. It nearly makes me sick how many people here are into Hal bashing. One of the greatest and most respected sports writers in the country. The day we lose Hal will be like losing the sunshine forever. Remember how many DDN subscribers cancelled their subscription when it was announced that he was “retiring”? Hal, keep up the good work, we need you and your keen insight into the world of baseball. And, finally, don’t listen to the negative comments about your 70 year old ears. These comments are from idiots who know squadoosh about sports and couldn’t make their T-ball teams when they were kids. Keep writing what you hear and I’ll keep enjoying what you write. I was there. I heard Gomes sing “I won’t let you down.” Then passing a teammate said “Wainwright gone.” This happened before I found out about Wainwright’s elbow. I remember thinking he was singing about taking Wainwright deep to help the team. Gomes isn’t the type to wish injury on anyone. I just think a few added meaning from Hal’s blog that wasn’t there.

What I find hillarious is that the comments for this article and the one dealing with whinney B###s by BP have by far had the most comments out of any Hal has written.Where is the game on the field??? Fact is, whether Gomes said this or not is irrelevent. It will not impact the outcome on the field one iota. It also doesn’t make Gomes any less of a person if he said it. I’m sure if he said it, the reference was geared towards the reds not having to face one of the best pitchers in the league. Not that he was glad that Adam Wainwright was injured. If Votto went down and was lost for the year I’m sure Cardinal players would be sad that Joey was injured but delighted that it increased their chances of making the playoffs. Gomes isn’t a bad guy and Hal isn’t a bad reporter. From a fans perspective I’m glad we don’t have to face Adam but I wish him a speedy recovery. I don’t think this makes me or Gomes a bad person. Exhibition Games start jSunday. Lets put this non-event where it belongs in our rearview mirror.

Those who repeat smack, or what they thought they heard, are no better than those who created it. I believed Mr. Gomes. The current Reds are of impeccable character and will let their play on the filed do the talking. Brandon Phillips will continue to tell the truth. Many will not like it, but it’s not smack. There are also those who do not have sufficient internal stability to use their power without corrupting. This sports writer is one of those.

Gomes was a douche in Tampa so I have no doubt he was singing in reference to Wainwright’s injury. Every time there was some sort of tussle there he was, right in the middle of it. That scrubbish .200 lifetime avg versus Wainwright might have been part of the reason he was singing.

I would think that so-called “hall of fame (shame)” writers would work for accuracy in reporting. If Gomes gets hit by a Cardinals pitcher the 1st game, you should be made to stand at home plate and let Gomes fire a couple at you. Retire, Hal. You are losing it.

Typical media “wanna be”! Regardless of what he did or didn’t say it was within the confines of his own clubhouse. What were you doing, hiding in the corner looking for a crumb(what does that sound like)?? First( or should I say most recently) you sneak around and throw Philips under the bus with yet another clubhouse comment and now Gomes. That’s not journalism. It’s creating a story for your own benefit. Maybe the Reds will wise up and stop you at the door from now on. Hope you’re proud of yourself!

Don’t worry about it and keep trucking along with the great career that you have worked so hard at. I am still with you 100% my friend! I know we all have no sound judgment anymore when people actually believe - regardless of what Gomes sang - that he was really happy to hear about a pitcher’s injury. People are mad about this? Really? Let’s see - Wainwright probably should have won the Cy Young Award last year, the Reds could not beat him or Carpenter, and none of the Reds are allowed to be happy about the possibility of not facing him? For a culture of insensitive people, we sure are thin-skinned, aren’t we? Of course it’s unfortunate the guy’s hurt - I’ll pray for a quick healing so we can beat the Cards at full strength. But if Carpenter blows his arm out too, I’d probably sing AND dance. Best of all, regardless of how upset people are, it’s still February and we’re talking baseball. Well done, Hal.

Funny how things worked out since Hal was initially thrown under the bus by his own sports editor, only to be brought back after an outcry by the readers. Why do people even bother reading the DDN anymore? They’re just a combination of the Cincinnati Post, Columbus Dispatch and WHIO-TV and several other publications. We can all pretend otherwise, but people do celebrate when an opponent is weakened for whatever reason. Think that the rest of the country isn’t celebrating the 5 game suspension those Ohio State football players received (for doing virtually nothing wrong)? True, it wasn’t due to injury, but missing those games can still cost those players millions in an NFL contract, and those are college kids. Hey, Wainwright got a setback, not a death sentence. Think StL fans wouldn’t be celebrating if Arroyo went down for the season? Maybe Hal repeating whatever he thought he heard was a mistake, but he is far from the only writer in the locker room and these things will and do come out.

Once again, the Reds are the class of this division and of the whole NL (maybe behind Philly.) The Reds have the hitting, pitching, fielding, and managing of a World Series caliber team. The Reds have the best fans in the game too. The Cards are second-rate and have been for years. That World Series win in 2006 was a fluke. The Cards’ ownership doesn’t care about winning because the sheep at Busch will accept whatever bunch of losers are put out on the field. Reds fans demand success and demand top notch play and now they’ve got it.

First off Hal, you have been a great contributer in the world of Reds media. However, I have to agree with Paul Daugherty’s 2/24 Morning Line. I don’t see the value of you running with this article. First, it is more than likely going to get Gomes beaned and possibly hurt. Second, it’s locker room talk and should stay there. It was not a press conference. I think this is great and I thought the brawl last year was great. If others view our organization as classless, so be it, why does it matter. All that matters is winning and we did that last year and we’ll do it again this year. Looks like our rotation just got better than the Cards’!

A GOOD reporter would have approached Gomes and asked for clarification instead of just writing something without checking facts. Hal, if you heard other reporters “singing” about all the eye problems you have had in the past, you wouldn’t have liked it. I can’t believe you actually wrote what you did. Maybe it’s time to hang it up for good. You have really tarnished your legacy. Give it up while you still have some fans. I wonder how many of the Ask Hal questions are actually real and not made up to fill space. No doubt you heard what you heard but you had no business writing it without asking Gomes about it. Also, maybe it’s time to limit when reporters are allowed in the clubhouse. Just leave the reporting to those who are stil professional. Come back to Ohio and enjoy retirement.

You are have become nothing more than a glorified gossip columnist. Hopefully, Dusty will kick you out of the clubhouse. Please retire.

Andy, what color is the sky in your world? Seriously, your lack of intellect is an insult to even the illiterate bumpkin population of Ohio. Go back to your trailer and have another Pop Tart on your Woody Hayes collectible plate while your cousin/wife cooks up a fresh batch of meth. It’ll be okay. Really.

Well, well, well another Reds player opening their trap and badmouthing the Cardinals. They deserve anything that happens to them this year. Can’t wait for them to visit STL!

Cards fans need to realize that their franchise is a pathetic joke that’s stuck in the past. Ownership gives them crap wrapped in nostalgia and those sheep at Busch happily eat it up. Next 10 years will be dominated by the Reds winning all the division crowns, NL Pennants, and even World Series and the Cards will be mired in mediocrity and become bottom feeders like the Pirates. And that’s what St. Louis deserves as the murder capital of the US. Cincinnati is better than St. Louis is every single possible way from the city’s history, the class of people, and the sports teams. If St. Louis became a huge sinkhole tomorrow no one would even notice.

Wainwright doesn’t deserve this. He seems to be such a classy, respectable person. If this were Carpenter, I would find this situation to be not only humorous but deserved. I feel bad for both Wainwright and Gomes. I have to say, I although it is Wainwright that might be out, there’s some sigh of relief.

Hal, I have nothing but respect for your past work, but it’s time to retire for real. You seem to have lost all sense of judgment and based on this blog post, you’ve also absolved yourself of any accountability for your inaccurate reporting. All of the other Reds reporters are backing up Gomes, and yet you continue to make excuses here for being wrong. I understand that the theme song of a 25 year old movie is probably too new for you to know. However, now for the second time, you’ve caused animosity between two clubs that wasn’t necessary due to your poor judgment and inaccurate story. Ken Griffey finally hung it up-it’s time that you do too.

“…but I won’t throw anybody else under the bus.” Hal, you may not have thrown any writers under the bus but what you reported has only increased the perception of the national baseball fanbase that the Reds and players are a classless organization. This is a major setback towards reversing the damage last years brawl caused. There is no way I can believe that someone with your experience would have no idea the fervor such a post would cause. What may be most offensive though is quoting Gomes without even talking to him or telling him you would run that comment. And to do it while high tailing it out of goodyear is just cowardly.

I wasn’t happy when I saw that Wainwright was hurt. I wish it was Carpenter, the one who escalated the brawl @ GABP last year.

Don’t listen to the people ripping you a new one, Hal. There is no accountability on the internet whatsoever and they can hide behind their computer screens and criticize whoever they want with no consequences. People know you and you actually came out and apologized. Whether you made a mistake or whether Gomes was celebrating the injury, you still came out and fixed whatever mistake may or may not have been made. Good job. I like your blog.

I agree with Aaron on this. Hal has not earned a passing grade in locker room judgment over the last year, but I expect better going forward.

Well I have been pretty excited all day that Wainwright will hopefully gone for the year. And I hope Gomes did sing about it, I don’t know how you don’t love a good rivalry. It’s nice to see the players as into it as the fans are. Also, who are any of you to say what Hal has the right to post?

Mary how can you say its not his business? of course lockeroom talk is his business, its why you and the rest of us read his blog, of course some things are not for publication and maybe the line is kinda grey sometimes but obviously Hal is pretty good about not crossing it or he wouldnt get all the great stuff he does, this post is as close to a retraction as is necessary. I don’t think any of us would wish an injury on another teams player but a little fist pump for the competative edge that results from said injury isnt necassarily bad sportsmanship. By the way I have trouble spelling necassary, and a lot of other words, so obviously I have no business writing anything.

Get ready for some more bean ball from the Cards, this time it will be Gomes and it will be your fault Hal. Stay silent about the locker room talk, it’s not your damn business anyeway.

To quote Judge Smells from “Caddy Shack” Oh Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy. These weren’t foolish responses. They were reactions to poor taste. All of us avid fans of Hal realized this smacked of the National Enquirer and was below Hal’s quality penmanship. A loyal follower will bring you back in bounds when you wander out of bounds.

I’m hesitant to say this since I respect the work that you do: But, between this and Phillips’ comments about the Cardinals last year, maybe it’d be wise to limit some of the locker room talk that you write about. In the grand scheme of things, these comments don’t add to the understanding of the game. All they do is add unnecessary controversy to what should already be an intense race for the NL Central…

I’m sure there will be a ton of people out there that won’t believe Gomes anyway.

Well said Hal! Still doesn’t excuse all the fools that blamed it all on you. Everyone takes things so dang seriously nowadays.
