Trotwood man indicted on drug charges, could face life sentence

DAYTON — A Trotwood man indicted on drug trafficking charges could face a life sentence as an armed career criminal, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Stanley Ray Mason, 48, was indicted Tuesday, March 24, on one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Because Mason has at least three prior felony convictions, he could be sentenced as an armed career criminal if convicted of possession of a firearm as specified in count three of the indictment, said Gregory G. Lockhart, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

“If convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm as charged in count three, he would face a mandatory minimum 15-year sentence and up to life imprisonment if the court finds him to be an armed career criminal,” Lockhart said.

ATF agents and Trotwood Police officers arrested Mason early in the morning March 13 in a car outside a Dayton apartment complex. They found six bags of marijuana and a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol in the car with Mason. Mason has been in custody since his arrest.

Conviction of possession with intent to distribute marijuana is punishable by five years imprisonment, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime carries a potential penalty of five years to life imprisonment consecutive to any time served for the drug charge.

The judge needs to “throw the book” at him. He just doesn’t get the message.

Did he shoot anyone? Was there any violence at all? Or was he just selling MJ? Why would we want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars locking up someone who is posing no threat whatsoever? Let him spend the next five years cleaning up trash on the highway. Like it or not, we don’t have the money to keep throwing people in prison.

whatever… what do you want to do… wait until he uses the gun to kill someone before you send his sorry a** to jail?

Fedup - that has to be the dumbest comment ever. Violence - why did he have a gun in the first place. He wouldn’t hesitate to use that gun at all. Obviously putting him in jail the first 2 times didn’t work. This guys wants to continue to break the law, put his butt in jail for good. I would rather have him off the streets with his guns and drugs thank you.

You people are way to harsh. I’m sure he only had that gun for self defense. Just because he had a gun you want to crucify the poor man. What happened to turn the other cheek? My boyfriend agrees too. We thought voting in Mr. Obama in would change these kinds of things. Isn’t he cute as a bug…

Yeah, let another person get out of trouble. Remember a few days ago when this same kind of person decided he wanted to kill four police officers? You liberals need to wake up and see that people who are “given second chances” or given probation get in trouble again 90% of the time. Get serious with crime and crime will go down!!!!

“JUST” selling mj?” “posing no threat whatsoever”, hellooo, they sell this crap to our kids, and it kills the brain cells. Now how is that NOT a threat? Pick up trash, pfftt make them eat it! It’s a never ending drug battle in the USA, sad.

this is all a big joke. if this country really wanted to stop the illegal flow of drugs into this country, they could. If we can spen biliions of dollars in Iraq and other foreign countries, and remove its leaders from power, someone please tell me what the problem is with this country not being able to control this. according to a lot of stats that I see, its not the career criminals that we should be afraid of, its the average person who just snaps one day and goes off and shoots 10 or 12 people at the mall or at high school. I think these so called “armed career criminals” are nothing more than scapegoats for the many real criminals that are perpetuating this whole notion of locking them up for life. But I guess in the bigger scheme of things, they are the perfect “labor” for the American Prison Machine. Its very profitable for them

Fedup, are you real? Can’t believe the comments on letting this kind of crap go on. Its causing the deaths of children and adults. If they survive, their brains are fried. Do we have to keep supporting this idiot way of thinking?

He didn’t learn his lesson. I think he should be hit hard with time for the weapon, but life, that is way to much. He was selling but having a pistol means off top you are a violent drug dealer. Thats crap about a devils island that is bull these are people just like me or u.

All one has to do is look back on prohibition. Violent crime related to liquor trafficing skyrocketed during that time. When it became legal again the violence subsided to pre-prohibition levels. Clearly the same is true for weed. Make it legal and the violent crime associated with it goes away as well

If weed is made legal the sale of other drugs will go up. Weed dealers will not have anything to sell so the will sell whatever, making violent crimes associated with drugs still very relevant.

People have tried for literally thousands of years to stop prositution and illegal drugs in society. IT WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN! Best plan is to legalize, regulate and tax just like any other comodity.

Who said he was selling to children? And far more people are frying their brains (and kidneys) drinking than ever have using MJ. I suggest we start restraining our incompetent police before they destroy what few liberties Mr. Bush didn’t manage already to trample.

Incompetent police? Sounds like you’ve prolly had some run ins with the law yourself. Thank god the city is getting sued so that they have to make the police and fire exams easier so that “everyone” has the chance to pass. If police officers are already incompetent, lord help us if they start letting even less intelligent people police our streets. And get over it, Obama is not doing anything different. “He closed guantanamo bay down and stopped the mistreatment of known terrorists!” Sounds good on the outside, too bad they’re just going to take them other places and torture them there instead! Obama doesn’t run this country, its the New World Order and bankers that control what happens in the U.S.! Look up the facts!!!!!…….Back to the article, this man needs to go back to prison, he’s worthless in the real world.

To flipper, fedup, whatever, hhres, michael, cool and whoever else- ths man happens to be a great friend of mine since 1989. Yes he has had many issues and some stints with the law. On any law infraction- he has served his time. This same man Stanley R. Mason has a heart of gold. If you don’t know his struggle please dont comment on his pain. Sometimes good people do bad things. and I can say personally that Stan never had a chance. It goes back to the old theory of nature vs. nuture- and from childhood he has been cursed birth. Not everything is black and white. there is a whole lot of grey in between there. I just pray that the judicial system punishes him only for the crime. DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE REST OF HIS LIFE!!! there are people who love and care about him- and truely he does have a soul, and is worthy of saving.

Give me the 40 grand a year it cost to warehouse him and I make sure he stays in line. If he doesn’t I will give back the state double(80k).

Fedup you are a moron, probably a drug dealer and at least a drug user. You are a pathetic piece of trash not deserving a place in this society. I could care less that your little hero had some weed. I wouldn’t care if he had 10 tons of pot, that he had a firearm while doing a drug deal means his stupid a$$ needs to be locked up and away from the public. Carrying a gun when you’re carrying dope means you are willing to take someone else’s life to protect your dope. I hope he gets life. A big bonus is he won’t be having a string of baby momma’s lying all over for the rest of us to pay for.

To Jon: As a matter of fact, he has 2 grown children, one of which is a nurse. He also has one grandchild. I don’t think he will be having children or baby mammas, or at least he hasn’t in the last 20 years. And you are right about on thing. He is my hero. Unless you are ready to pull out yours and all of your family and friends criminal records- stop judging!!! I can pull mine out- totally clean. Can you say the same. Your brother is probably an addict, and you sound like a self-righteous pedaphile. Oh- I forgot, you’re perfect- that must be what gives you the right to judge.

Hero - a gun-toting drug dealer who has been in jail several times and obviously not learned his lesson. You have got to be kidding. That is ridiculous. I don’t care if the man has a heart of gold, I’m pretty sure the family of murderers and other criminals could say the same thing about their relatives. No one is saying they are perfect, but this man’s actions and continuous actions has put him where he is today. I grew up in a lower class home and worked my way through school. Not once did I do drugs or carry a weapon. I can tell you my family is the same. Great for his kids that they turned out different than they their father, they obviously got their mother’s morals and values. If this was the first time, then yes maybe give him a break. This is his FOURTH time at least. He’s a habitual criminal and shouldn’t be free. Lock him up, because he obviously cannot learn from his mistakes with a golden heart or not. Not being judgemental, just stating facts and common sense.

To: Especially 4neenee: I am commenting because I personally know, 4neenee and Mr. Mason and I would like to know what qualifies you to make an assumption of what anyone deserves based on a half page news article? What kind of assumptions could someone make about you on a half page. Let’s see first of all based on the fact that you assume the mother of this mans children is a better person tells me you a*s..u(not)me that he didn’t raise them and the fact that you would make reference to where you grew up in comparison to what kind of life you think he has had tells me you are purely and clearly judgemental and don’t have any facts, contrary to the closing line in your response. God Bless America for freedom speech, however I can not beleive that there are so many people in the world like you, who are narrow minded enough to decide who is a throw away and who is worthy of living. The mere fact that you refered to where you grew up as “lower class” says that you are ashamed of yourself.
