Man indicted in fatal beating
DAYTON — A Dayton man already charged with felonious assault in connection with an attack on a man who later died from his injuries was indicted Thursday, April 29, on murder charges.
Clarence L. Washington, IV, 22, had already been indicted Dec. 30 on two counts of felonious assault, three counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary. He has been in the Montgomery County Jail since his Nov. 28 arrest.
David Chancellor, 59, died Jan. 15, nearly two months after suffering significant brain injuries during a beating in late November, police said.
The alleged robbery and beating occurred on Basswood Avenue just north of downtown, in an apartment building where both men lived, police said. Chancellor’s condition worsened shortly after the beating and he slipped into a coma, police said.
He never regained consciousness and died at a medical care facility. Chancellor became city’s 43rd homicide victim in 2009.
