Police: Woman shot at Walmart by man just released from prison
MORAINE - The 28-year-old Kettering woman shot and robbed in a Walmart Supercenter parking lot will have to spend Christmas in the hospital after doctors removed a portion of her intestines, according to police.
Gina King is recovering from a single gunshot wound to the stomach she sustained Saturday evening, Dec. 20, after she was robbed by a man recently released from prison as she stood near her car at the Walmart, 1701 W. Dorothy Lane, Moraine Det. Paul Guess said.
Moraine police arrested Lashawn Porcher and Richard Elijah, both 46 and from Dayton, less than an hour after the robbery.
Elijah, believed to be the trigger man, was just released from prison on Dec. 18 for an April conviction for breaking and entering, according to jail records.
Witnesses said Elijah approached King as she wheeled a cart full of groceries and Christmas gifts to her car. King parked her car away from other cars deep in the lot so it wouldn’t get damaged by other motorists, Guess said.
“He told her to give him the purse or she was going to get shot,” Guess said. “She said ‘No’ to getting shot and then Elijah grabbed the purse.”
And for some reason, Elijah started to run away, but turned around and shot King, who fell to the ground screaming, Guess said.
Elijah then ran from the lot and over to a white Cadillac waiting in the parking lot of the Golden Nugget restaurant across the street from Walmart, Guess said. A witness spotted Porcher and Elijah and followed them in a car while talking to police on the phone, Guess said.
Police caught up with the alleged robbers and arrested them in at Moraine Auto Parts, 2833 Northlawn Ave.
“It was a huge break for us,” Guess said. “Without them, it would made it much harder to make an arrest.”
Police found the 9mm handgun used in the shooting on Sunday, Guess said. The gun was inside King’s purse, which was found underneath a car in the parking of the Golden Nugget, Guess said.
The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s office approved charges at about 3 p.m. Monday against Elijah for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, felonious assault to cause serious harm and felonious assault with a deadly weapon.
Porcher faces complicity charges of felonious assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. A court date has yet to be set.
A background check found Elijah has an extensive criminal record dating back to 2000, which includes arrests and convictions for drug possession, theft and numerous parole violations.
He was convicted of possession of crack in 2004, 2006 and 2008, according to court records.
Porcher has little criminal record and has never been arrested in Montgomery County prior to Saturday’s incident, according to jail records.
