Authorities to begin “aggressive” Click it or Ticket campaign
DAYTON - Law enforcement agencies across the state are set to kick off what they call an “aggressive” crackdown on drivers who operate vehicles without being buckled in.
Starting May 21 through Memorial Day agencies are participating in the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign. Officials said there will be “zero tolerance” enforcement and no warnings will be issued to those caught driving or riding in the front of a vehicle without wearing a seat belt.
“Too many people still take the attitude that it will never happen to them,” Dayton Lt. Brian Johns said. “We’d much rather write a thousand tickets than have to knock on one family’s door with the news that their loved one didn’t survive a crash because they weren’t wearing their safety belt.”
Police say when worn correctly, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45 percent - 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs and mini-vans.
Drivers not wearing a seat belt risk being fined $54 for the driver, while a front-seat passenger faces a $44 fine, according to the Dayton Police Department.

Cheers for the Dayton Police—all we need is an accident where passengera do not have their seat belts on, no insurance and a huge hospital bill—which we, the taxpayers, will have to payBy kncjr

This is just another way to bring more money in and to be able to stop you so the gestapo can run you through the system. It has nothing to do with safety.By scott

Remember, Ohio’s Seat Belt Law is a secondary law. They cannot pull you over just for a Seat Belt Violation. They have to trump up some other charge to pull you over for, and then give you the “Click It” ticket. I find it interesting that these articles on Seat Belt Crackdowns always fail to mention the difference between “primary” and “secondary” traffic laws…By Flying Monkey

Evidently, the police have the major crimes like murder, rape, illegal drugs, and armed robbery so well under control that taxpayer dollars can now be spent on seatbelt violations!By Walking Monkey

Roscoe2u, that is a great point you made. The state needs to focus on other crimes. They are using the cops as tax collectors.By RD

Roscoe2u is correct…but there is a proposed change in Gov S’s budget plan to make it “primary”. If changed it allows Ohio to collect $28+ Million in federal money that would otherwise be withheldBy TJE

Sorry, “urallidiots,” but we’d also be safer it we quit smoking and drinking, stopped eating fast food, and drove 20MPH everywhere but none of this things are the law. I’ve voluntarily worn my seatbelt all my life but it angers me that wearing them is mandatory.By TJE

To RD - sure, go ahead and exercise your right to stupidity by not protecting yourself in your vehicle. But, when you are ejected from your vehicle because you chose not to buckle up can I choose to not have my tax dollars going to pay for the responders coming out to your accident? Can I choose not to have to pay for the cops, ambulance, care flight, etc? What’s the big deal about wearing your seatbelt? I guess you know better about what can happen in a car accident when you don’t wear your seatbelts as opposed to all the experts who are proponents for wearing them. And for the rest of the posters, why do you all hate the cops so much? Do you feel they’re out to get you? Maybe that’s because you do things that are illegal so they are on the lookout for you fools? Me, I’m not worried about them because I obey the law and buckle up.By Cliff

It’s all about getting more of our money, period. Do this, don’t do this, pay this tax or we will fine you and make you pay! It’s all about getting more and more our money! If they are so worried about our safety why aren’t seat belts installed in our children’s school buses? What about our children’s safety?By Brandon

They’ve been running these commercials for 3 years now and they’re just now getting “aggressive”? I guess we should expect them to get aggressive on violent crime in 2012 since the Chief said hes tired of them. They’re raising the speed limit so they have to make the money up somewhere. Oh well…By Leslie

What about the people that die cause they are not thrown from the car? What about the people that die cause they can’t get the seat belt off and another car or semi slams right into them? We never get those statistics. The reports always tell you about people dieing without seat belts, but they never tell you about the people that die even though they were seat belts. It’s amazing but you can steal die in a car wreck even if you have a seat belt on. The seat belt can even hurt you. We have to stop passing feel good laws.By Jack

When the seat belt law was first passed, they said they would never pass a law where you could be stopped for just not wearing a seat belt. The legislature out right lied. But people still vote for democrats. I guess they like being lied to!By Rob

I read this article and just wonder about some of the stupidest laws being inforced. People driving cars have to wear seat belts, people riding bicycles have to wear helmets. People driving motorcycles down the highway doing 65MPH or more do not have to wear helmets? This just amazes me!! If Dayton is doing this then you know Kettering is too because they have to keep up with the $$$$$.By Jimmy jon

Wearing seatbelts should be a personal decision not one mandated by the government. It’s just another way of making money for the failing budgets.By Driver

If they would just enforce all the other traffic laws that actually prevent accidents, then they could talk about safety. Wearing a seat belt will never prevent an accident. Once an accident occurs, then seat belts might reduce injury or death. But the best way to enhance safety is to ticket those that break all the existing primary traffic laws (eg stop signs/lights, turn signals, speeding, illegal lane changes, tailgating, etc).By Thinkaboutit

Jack, You can not be pulled over primarily for a seatbelt violation, its a secondary violation in other words police officers must pull you over for a primary offense such as speeding, running a stop sign or other traffic offenses and then cite you if you are not wearing your seat belt, please get your facts straight before you open your mouth….knowledge is golden only when you know what your talking about.By Thinkaboutit

Revenue enhancement - plain and simple.By Craig
May 19, 2009 5:44 PM | Link to this
Anytime the cops say “campaign”, read revenue enhancement. Did anyone else notice that when fuel went up to $4 per gal., none of the police agencies complained of high fuel costs? That is because they were paying for the higher fuel with your fines. Now they are trying to fund paying for the officers that they had to lay off. What bothers me is, I wear my seatbelt, drive the speed limit and stop at all traffic lights, what happens when everyone obeys those laws? The change the standards. Remember when the legal alcohol limit was .10 and now it is .08 and soon it will be .06. Stop lights that have cameras that don’t produce tickets, they change the time cycle to produce ticket$. So don’t tell me that it is about safety, it is about money.By dhampton100

Let me first say I always wear a seatbelt, it is just good commonsense. That said I don’t any reason for most of the people complaining when they think it’s Ok to hold people, without charges in jails for as long as the government wants to. I know you don’t mind getting tricked into paying a little ticket—Oh let’s not forget pouring a little water down your nose and your throat until you tell me what I want to know.—QUIT CRYING!By Frylock

Ok, what about those people who were trapped in the car because of their seatbelt. Also what if your seatbelt goes across part of your neck, if you get in a accident, it’s possible that seatbelt will decapatate you. I think as long as you are an adult with no children in the car, it should be your choice on whether you want to wear your seatbelt or not.By MyChoice
