DAYTON - The man stabbed to death early Wednesday, June 3, has been identified as 48-year-old Darrell Murphy.
Murphy, of Cincinnati, was stabbed after he got into an argument with Derrick Brooks, 49, at a home in the 300 block of Ashwood Avenue, Dayton police Lt. Robert Mannix said.
Police arrested Brooks several hours later when he returned to the scene, and he remains in the Montgomery County Jail, according to a police report.
Mannix said a woman living at the residence on Ashwood regularly provided meals for homeless people. The two men involved in the stabbing were at her home when a fight broke out some time after 1 a.m.
Mannix said Murphy asked the woman who provided meals for money, and Brooks became angry, saying the request for money was disrespectful. The two men argued, and one of them retrieved a butcher knife from the home’s kitchen and stabbed the other in the chest.
Police were called at 1:26 a.m., and when they arrived they found Murphy dead, Mannix said.
Mannix said Brooks had left the house, but returned while officers were on the scene. Witnesses identified Brooks as the attacker, and he was taken into custody.
Murphy is the city’s 18th homicide victim this year. You can check the status of the other 17 and those from 2008 by clicking here.
TweetOSP to partner with Dayton police to reduce fatal crashes
DAYTON - The Ohio Highway Patrol announced this week that it will partner with the Dayton Police Department in an initiative to reduce fatal crashes and arrest drivers who break the law.
The co-op begins Thursday, June 4, and lasts through the end of the month, according to a statement released by the patrol.
Both groups report that nearly 50 percent of all fatal crashes in Montgomery County are alcohol or drug related. Last year 39 people were killed on county roads or highways, with 26 of those deaths occurring in Dayton, according to the patrol.
Montgomery County ranked fourth in the number of fatal crashes in 2008 among all Ohio counties. So far this year, there have been 17 traffic-related deaths in the county with 14 of those occurring in Dayton.
The groups combined last year in a similar effort and reported a 40 percent reduction of crashes in targeted areas.
TweetMan shot in drive-thru robbery attempt
DAYTON - Police are searching for a man who tried to rob a west Dayton drive-thru and shot a 51-year-old employee in the process.
Police responded to a robbery alarm and a report of shots heard at about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, according to a police report. When officers arrived to Christy’s Drive-Thru, 2326 W. Third St., they discovered Danny L. Strozier shot in the right hand, the report said.
Strozier told police he was closing the drive-thru when a man in a ski mask grabbed him from behind and demanded money. He said he broke free, and the suspect pulled a small-caliber handgun and shot him in the hand, the report said. The suspect then fled the scene, the report said.
Strozier was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and the drive-thru owner told police nothing was taken, the report said.
