Officer accidentally Tasers himself during arrest

DAYTON - A Dayton Police officer who deployed his Taser while trying to arrest a fleeing drug-trafficking suspect ended up jolting himself in the process.

Officers were in the 200 block of Salem Avenue Thursday morning about 3 a.m. after numerous complaints by residents of drug trafficking in the area, according to a police report.

They noticed two men walk into a vacant house on West Hudson Avenue and then walk out 15 minutes later holding flashlights, the report stated.

When officers tried to stop the men, identified as Carl Patterson and William Bean, they refused to stop and fled the scene, the report stated.

One officer caught up with Bean who had what was later determined to be a pump-action BB gun hidden under a jacket, the report stated. While the officer was speaking to Bean, Patterson was running from another officer.

Patterson was warned he was going to Tasered and after refusing to stop, the officer deployed the Taser, bringing Patterson to the ground, the report stated.

But the officer was too close to Patterson and became entangled in the Taser wires. The officer quickly cut the electric to the Taser and Patterson tried to flee again.

Other officers arrived and were able to get Patterson in handcuffs. Police later determined both men had outstanding warrants.

Bean, 31, was arrested on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon. Patterson was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

The officer who was entangled in the Taser wires was not seriously injured.

Go ahead and hurl your insults people, get it all out. Like no one else has ever messes up on the job before this? DPD and DFD should just close up shop and then the city would tear itself apart and burn to the ground. Then you could start from scratch!

So let me get this straight: Andy and Barney were on duty in Dayberry and observed 2 suspects. While Andy was talking to one the other fled and Barney, while trying to taser the suspect tased himself instead. If I were Andy I’d taked Barney’s batteries so this can’t happen again.

This headline is made up by DDN. Nowhere in the article does it say the officer tasered himself. It says that he was entangled in the taser wires. He wouldn’t have been able to cust the wires if he was being tasered.

No, I’d say Doc did OK. This should make national news so Dayton can look just a little more stupid than it is.

Some of these comments are proof positive that even goofs can log onto the internet. These guys did an outstanding job responding to the needs and concerns of this community. Residents called and complained the about this activity and DPD responded. Are some of you the same ones that bash them police around the clock for not doing a good job, hanging out at the donut shop….what do you want from these officers? Those of you that support the police…good for you. I am only a mall cop and only get a taste of what it is like on the streets….there just seems to be no pleasing. Give them your support because we are lucky we can still find people willing to do that job.

People make mistakes everyday and it is not news worthy. let a cop make a harmless mistake it is plastered all over the news.

There is a big difference between tasing yourself and getting “tangled” in the wires. Getting tangled is not uncommon when you tase a dude thats running or fighting. Good Job DDN, for misleading the public. Hey, after McLin loses her job, maybe you can hire her. Good Job DPD!
