Officer jumps from behind tree to surprise man at shooting
DAYTON - The first officer to respond to a 22-year-old woman shot in the chest inside her apartment Monday, June 15, had to take cover behind a tree when he saw a man walk out of the complex carrying something under a green towel.
Officer Ryan T. Halburnt was waiting for backup to respond to the shooting at 228 Niagara Ave. about 4:30 p.m. when he noticed Demetrius D. Knight, 24, holding what was later found to be marijuana packaged for sale, according to a police report.
The woman is expected to recover from the shooting, which police and residents at the complex said was drug related. You can read more about the shooting by clicking here.
But before medics arrived to help the woman, Halburnt noticed Knight look both ways down the street before walking away from the apartment, the report stated.
Knight then walked toward the street and when he got 30 feet from Halburnt, the officer appeared from behind the tree and ordered Knight to drop whatever was wrapped in the green towel, the report stated.
Officers later determined Knight had 45 grams of marijuana packaged in baggies of different sizes, the report stated. Knight told Halburnt he was going to sell the baggies for $2, $5 and $20 a piece.
Knight is not a suspect in the shooting, but faces a felony drug trafficking charge. He was taken to Montgomery County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. today.

That is a no brainer and indicative of DPD. Chase an armed attempted murderer leaving out the back door??? No way! Chase some weed head with a few grams of pot out the front door?? All day! This is the same department that chooses to catch criminals by traffic violations.

So what was the point in him looking both ways if he didnt see the white police cruiser sitting out in front? LOL

I guess I missed the part of the story where the armed attempted murderer ran out the back door. It’s time to stop blaming the police and start thanking them for all that they do.

Pot. 45 grams. Pot dealer. Lock him up. Feed him, cloth him, give him a celly to luv on. And when he gets out he will probably have AIDS and less useful talent then when he went in. This system works just fine. Whose his Daddy.

I guess that the officer was expected to see through the green towel. I hope the police give you just what you expect from them if a crime is committed against you or your family. NOTHING!

I thought only Dogs and Bats were rabbed? Or, am I thinking of RABID? Fortunately, statistic, there is a lot more than meets the eye after that officer took the report. I don’t think that you would want to be in that officer’s shoes IF AND WHEN he’s called to a domestic confrontation where one or both partners are threatening each other with a knife or a gun. Think about it. Jim

You must tell all of your friends that you read this as it will be deleted . Lest you become informed. The reason I am posting this here is because the DDN will not allow posts on the story of the 12 year old boy on a bicycle that was murdered by a speeding gun toting drug dealer that was released to the street by mat heck and judges WISEMAN GORMAN MCCRACKEN The DDN deleted all posts from the first article and refuses to allow posts on any updates. The posters on the first article wanted to know the name of the perpetrator and the names of the judges that turned him loose. This is classified information so no more posts. The DDN is actually purposefully and overtly trying to HIDE information from you. HALL 09/17/2008 TERMINATION ENTRY FILED 9/11/08. SENTENCED TO 5 YRS COMMUNITY CONTROL. Judge WISEMAN In a nut shell all of the above means that ANTWONNE L. MCGINNIS was arrested for stealing a car. Judge GORMAN let him off. He did not comply with the terms of probation twice by robbing somebody and not staying off drugs. Judge MCCRACKEN let him off. He did not comply with the terms of probation again, judge GORMAN gave him 12 months. He was found guilty of having crack Gorman was required by law to sentence him to 1-5 years. She gave him the minimum 1 year but that was concurrent to the year he received for blowing 2 chances on the car theft charge. He actually did not serve the required sentence for the crack because he was already in prison. I cannot find if Gorman violated Ohio law because she did not sentence him to consecutive sentences. All I know is that he did not serve a sentence specifically for the crack. After he got out of prison he then was charged with WEAPONS UNDER DISABILITY (PRIOR DRUG CONVICTION). Judge WISEMAN SENTENCED him TO 5 YRS COMMUNITY CONTROL. This convicted gun toting drug dealing thief has learned that he owns the world and any little kid that is on his street deserves to be killed. To all little kids out there do not go on to Antwonne’s street.

Let’s get one thing straight, these people put their lives on the line for you and I everyday. Where is the gratitude? What if you were in the same situation as that officer…you have no idea what was under that towel. He very well could have been the shooter. Until you have walked in there shoes and dealt with the stupid crack heads on the west side I think it best to keep your comments to yourself.

The Dayton Police do an excellent job serving and protecting the public. They are understaffed. Crimes can be solved if citizens cooperate. Judges need to accept less plea bargains and avoid deciding on community service sentences. USE the jail- Use tents if need be.

To RETIRED SGT: So I fat fingered a typo. Why don’t you learn to use mixed case? You’re probably one of the fat *asses that sits around in a donut shop all night and hides behind a tree to bust a pothead! Get a grip the DPD is noneffective when it comes to controlling crime.

McRib: Tell me again how that cop should have known that what was under the green towel was pot and not a gun? After all, he was on th scene of a shooting. Seems anyone with a scintilla of common sense would think he acted prudently considering the circumstances. Maybe you are suggesting he should have let this guy go along his merry way once he learned it was indeed an illegal controlled substance and not a gun? You would then be brying foul for him not doing his job. They can’t win in your eyes, can they?

PLUS, it’s hard to control crime when, as a poster earlier stated, guys they arrest 3, 4, 5+ times are out of jail on community control, or ILC or some other social program that DOES NOT deter their criminal behavior.

The DPD is full of overweight lazy officers. They may get frustrated by the number of times they may have to arrest a guy. But if they did it right the FIRST time a guy wouldn’t be getting off in court. The police bring these weak, often trumped up charges before a judge, and more often than not, the judge has to let a guy go or hopes, he pleads to some lesser BS. The DPD are weak and racist. If you don’t all ready see that, you will.

staffsgt. there are occasionally a few good DPD officers. They don’t stay long or are forced to retire. The rest are cowards,(sorry)I call the police when I saw or was victim, if they came they took a report, or harassed ME, like I had committed an offense! I’d rather be caught in Dayton WITH a gun, than without! Then I know the DPD won’t mess with me, but if my drivers license is suspended….. I’m in BIG trouble buddy. Big trouble. That is a proven fact! Sorry SSgt.

I guess since you say it’s a fact it must be true! The real fact is the good out number the bad but all you hear is the negative. I’m sorry you had a bad experiance(real or imagined) but it doesn’t give you a right to paint all the men and women who put their lives on the line as “cowards”. I think we all know who the real cowards in this city are.
