DAYTON - A Dayton Police detective conducting a field interview at First Street Recycling Center of a possible theft suspect was taken to a local hospital after he was dragged about 30 feet by the suspect’s car Tuesday, June 16.
Dayton police on Wednesday identified the wounded officer as Det. Jamie Bullens, head of the police squad charged with apprehending scrap metal thieves.
A security guard at First Recycling Center, 1321 E. First St., used Bullens’ police radio to call for help about 3 p.m., Lt. Patrick Welsh said.
Bullens was talking to a suspicious metal scrapper about some brass fittings and copper pipes he was trying to cash in when the suspect jumped into a white Jeep Liberty and tried to take off, Welsh said.
Bullens was dragged about 30 feet before the suspect crashed the Jeep into a concrete wall, Welsh said.
The suspect was still in the Jeep when more officers arrived and was arrested.
Employees at the recycling center said the suspect was there Monday and hocked some suspicious metals for cash, Welsh. The same man arrived in the Jeep Tuesday and that’s when they called the detective to investigate.
