Students on school bus help police in hit-and-run

DAYTON - Police are trying to sort out who was behind the wheel of a blue Chevy Caprice that struck a Dayton City Schools bus full of children and fled the scene.

Officers responded to the intersection of Kings Highway and DeWitt Avenue about 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, on the report of a bus struck by a car that ran a stop sign and then fled the scene, according to a police report.

Bus driver Lee Wilson told officers he was talking to the man driving the blue Caprice, when the driver said he was going to turn the car around, the report stated.

Students on the bus watched as the driver got in the car and took off. Officers found the vehicle nearby at 1808 DeWitt Ave. with a man standing beside it, the report stated.

The students said the man, Michael Thornton who is the owner of the car, was not the driver when it struck the bus. Despite witness statements Thornton insisted that he was the driver, the report stated.

Marquasha Stewart claimed to be the front-seat passenger in the the car at the time of the accident and said Thornton was the driver, the report stated.

After pressing Thornton for more details, the man admitted to police he was not the driver. Stewart insisted he was, but based on Wilson’s statement and the students on the bus, officers determined Thornton was not the driver.

Neither Stewart nor Thornton have been charged in the accident, the report stated. Police are still investigating the accident.

The students on the bus were treated for minor injuries, the report stated.

No additional suspects were listed in the police report.
