Accused serial steak thief flees back into store after being caught
The Kroger manager and security guard watched Monday evening as a 57-year-old man entered the grocery store on Smithville, grabbed a grocery cart, headed for the meat department and piled 27 strip steaks — $509 worth — into the cart.
The man then went to the housewares section and pulled lidded trash basket off the shelf. He loaded his 27 strip steaks into the trash container, closed the lid and walked out of the store pushing the cart with the loot, according to the manager and security guard.
When confronted by the manager and security guard, the man fled … back into the store, where he was quickly apprehended, and police called.
Officers discovered that William Payne III had done the exact same thing back on June 1 at the Kroger on Brandt Pike. He was convicted in June of petty theft, trespassed from all Kroger stores, spent 13 days in jail, got another 167 days suspended and place on one year’s intensive probation.
Now he’s back in the county lockup. When he appears on court this afternoon, he could face felony shoplifting charges.
