I guess having that large loyal fan base who recogonizes players at the Cincy Airport got the team pumped to play. Whats the excuse now? They don’t know how to play in front of small crowds?

That is an embarrassing loss. UMass is not a good team and we got spanked by them. Our weak non-conference schedule is going to catch up with us. BG needs to quit scheduling teams from the weakest D-I conferences. Playing Delaware State does not get it done. Look, UMass had the balls to go into UW-Green Bay and get hammered, but it made them better.

The season appears that it is going to be about the same as last year. Which was not that bad. The problem is this team cannot score.

It was one game…on the road against a team that has beaten Kansas. 27 fouls to 10, 22 made free throws compared to 6…granted our willingness to launch from the outside instead of taking it strong to the hole probably didn’t help that stat. If we come back and win the next 4-5 which this team should be expected to, this will not be viewed as a devastating loss. However, we MUST play better and smarter or things could get going in a bad direction quickly.

I think the foul count is worth monitoring over the next few games. It is entirely possible that Dayton’s A-10 issues stem from the A-10 officiating style not allowing lock down defensive play. Something to look at moving forward…

Kurt, has it ever occurred to you that we win a lot of games at home because we are getting the home cooking? Every time we win at home, our opponents can claim that they got screwed by the refs. If we played a schedule with some road games, we would have a lot more losses but we would be tougher for it. BG sucks at putting together a schedule.

This loss today was not about refs or bad games—this is about non-conference preparation. You don’t learn how to improve through winning. If you schedule cupcake teams, this is the penalty. The unfortunate thing here is that this is not going to be the only time this happens this year. One game doesn’t mean that UD is in trouble, but what it does mean is each game lost is one more game they have to win to share the title with XU.

Sammy - I think every team in the NCAA can claim they get a few calls at home that they don’t get on the road. To call it the primary reason we have a strong home record is going a bit far. Regardless, 27-10 on fouls is about as one-sided as it can get. From what I saw, it wasn’t the reason we lost the game, but it didn’t help. Next several A10 games are very winnable, so let’s get past this and hopefully we’ll be talking about the 18-2 Flyers.

Chill out everyone. The one thing that every one is forgetting is that UMass is a horrible team. In their last home game, they got pummelled by 30 points by Vanderbilt. UIC from the Horizon League beat Vandy on the road. If you get beat by 30 points on your home court by Vanderbilt, you (that is UMass) SUCK.

I don’t think BG has anything to do with putting together the schedule. That is the role of the AD, who has to balance the need for a competitive nonconference schedule versus the budgetary needs of the program. Fouls were a bit one-sided, but several of the calls were for offensive fouls. More importantly, if we’re not able to penetrate, we’re not going to get the calls. Disappointing loss in a winnable game.

Mike, you can’t weight UMass based on these bad non-conference losses. They’re better than you might think. THey have a new coach and a somewhat new system and it takes awhile to get it right. I think they’re starting to and I think because of match up problems they beat Kansas at KC. I’ve followed all of these A-10 teams and I have to say: I’m not surprised. In fact, because of non-conference preparations, I actually see Temple and maybe UMass battling for 2nd place in the conference.

This program gets Top 25 support and financing, and continually turns in “Others Receiving Votes” results. This loss today (although it’s just one loss) is unacceptable. Said it before and I’ll repeat: BG’s a nice guy and a hard worker, but afraid he just doesn’t have it. A truly strong coach positions his team to contend for its conference championship most years, beat its rival, and is regularly in the NCAA tourney. None of that is happening at UD. Really, how much longer can BG last? Many programs would have made a change by now.

What a JOKE. Same old Flyers.Win the cupcake games at home/pre A10 and lose to aweful teams like Umass. Why bother following these “gutless old washwomen” (An old Mick Donoher team discription from blow out defeat at Michigan game back in 1978.Same crap year in and year out. NIT Baby!!!!

UD is not going to go anywhere with the Big H in the hole. UD is playing with four players on the court. And what was with the 15, count ‘em, substitutions in a 5 minute period as UD went from two downto 15 down???

Typical UD, for oh say the last 25 years, on the road is CHOKE, then the apologists come to their defense. UD will never gain national respect not winning on the road, losing to a team,(UMASS), who has really stunk it up lately. Flyer fans need to get real. UD will finish .500 or one game over in A-10 play at best.

The vaunted Dayton D is crushed by the totally inept Dayton O….again! Even games that have been won have been overshadowed by poor offensive play in my opinion. Does this team even have an offensive game plan? Is the only play in their book, drive to the basket, into the teeth of the opponent, get clobbered, put up a prayer towards the basket completely out of control? I don’t get it. How many times in a row can you drive into a collapsing defense? I guess a lot if you’re UD, Just painful to watch. I guess the term “good look” at the basket is antiquated in the BG program.

Charles Little gets called for stepping on the end line as he takes the ball out of bounds- something I’ve noted he does consistently, but has been lucky not to have called. He needs to be taught not to be so casual taking the ball out. And there have been an inordinate number of justified charging calls as Chris Wright and others drive into the lane. Can’t they be taught to go up vertically in that situation rather than charge ahead? Might have made a difference yesterday in the early going.

I agree with some of the aforementioned commments concerning UD’s lack of offense. It’s the same old story… everytime we play a worthy opponent, we score between 50 and 60 pts. Can anyone tell me what is Huelsman’s role in the offensive picture? Lifetime 4.9 pts. a game from a 6-11 bigman??? This guy is useless, like the rest of them when it comes to offense! Another terrible year on the horizon

Once again, sloppy play in the barely respectable A-10 Conference. If UD can’t beat the crap out of every team (except for Xavier) in the A-10, then they can never hope to make the NCAA tourney. It also shows very poor preparation for Conference play. UD has got to STOP playing such a horrible and sissy non-conference schedule. It does absolutely NOTHING to help prepare the team for Conference play. BG should know this!
