Gregory talks Flyer hoops on ESPN ‘podcast’

Dayton coach Brian Gregory was interviewed by ESPN’s Andy Katz after the UMass game for a podcast that was posted at ESPN.com today.

Gregory touched on the Flyers needing to “hold down the fort” with their defense and rebounding until they become better offensively.

Katz talked about UD’s win over Marquette having some “shelf life,” meaning it will still look good when the NCAA Selection Committee evaluates teams in March.

Although the interview took place 15 minutes after the Flyers’ 75-62 setback, Gregory was upbeat and optimistic about his team.

The Dayton Flyers will never be successful under Brian Gregory because they do not run an offense. They have all the talent in the world but all they do is stand around and shoot threes.

Does he think he is going to wear down the better competition with all the substituting? Maybe it’s time we substitute the coaching staff for one that knows how to coach offense.

Perhaps frustrated flyer and flyer4life should apply for the job as head coach or at least offensive coordinator. 14-2 and ppl still complain. Now if we start a losing trend then we can consider changes, but one game is not a trend. Most of the big coaches tell you to start with the defense and build from there, I believe that is what we have here. UMass game is hard to guage since the beat Kansas at Kansas and laid some eggs, you don’t know which team will show up. Unfortunately for UD it was the Kansas team. After the first loss we went on a six game winning streak, lets give BG and the flyers an opportunity to see how they rebound.

I am staying calm because they are 14-2 but I do see some serious problems with this team. I am not saying Gregory needs to go but I do not think he is very good at making adjustments to his team mid year or mid game. I remember last year during the swoon that someone brought up his january record and it was horrible. Teams scout, adjust and prepare for you and you have to be able to do the same. This staff has yet to prove anything in the second halves of their seasons. Some of it is the players but some is coaching too. Right now even at 14-2 I don’t think this is an NCAA team. Which stinks but they need to have at least 10 wins in conference to make a statement and getting smoked by a lackluster UMASS squad who got beat by 56 in their previous two sure is a bad statement. Maybe it was a bad game but we shall see

UMass is god awful. Their Sag is 165. To put that in perspective, Wright State is 112. WSU is way better than UMass.

Unlike most of you, I am pretty happy at 14-2. I never thought they would have this record at this point. I knew shooting would be an issue coming into the season but I think its starting to come around some. They just need to keep focused on getting better and if they make the tourney great if not this team should be poised to make the run for sure next year. If they don’t make it next season that would be a major problem.

just because Wright State is better than UMass does not mean that UMass is “awful”. If WSU was in the A10, they would be in the upper half of the conference.

Lets quit talking about Wright State. They have a good program and have been better than us in the RPI’s for two of the last three years. We don’t need to bash the Raiders to make ourselves look better.

The reason we are 14-2 is because of Gregory’s ability to have 12 guys buy into a high intensity, ball pressure, team defensive mentality. If one know anything about basketball, they understand defense creates offense. The Flyers are number 3 in the country in team defense which is phenominal. I do not believe BG’s inability to coach offense is the contributing factor to the Flyers lack of offense. We are extremely athletic team and BG does a good job teaching a up-tempo, fast break, dribble drive offense, with a hi-low set against a zone. The problem is, we do not have a shooter that can spread the D and create open lanes for penetration. Other than Marcus, we have no mid-range threat which limits our offensive production. The way to compensate is by taking advantage of offensive transition buckets and playing your pontential scorers more min in a row. CW, MJ, and CJ. CW and MJ have the ability to aveage 30 and 14 combined. They need more minutes to find the rythm of the game.

A bit off the subject, but if U.D. skedules Deleware St. and UNC-Greensboro, how can it be that Wright St. would not be a better choice? Everyone knows the place would be filled to the rafters.
