Flyers pull together after defeat

Dayton junior point guard London Warren called for a players-only meeting on the bus, asking the coaches and other occupants to step outside for a minute so he could share his heart, doing exactly what a team leader is supposed to do.

After Warren was finished and folks piled in, UD coach Brian Gregory joined his players in the back of the bus for a quick pep talk before pulling away from St. Louis. His message was upbeat and succinct: The Atlantic 10 is a grind, and the team that wins the crown will be the one that can be the most resilient and consistent over 16 games.

The Flyers, who are tied for first with Xavier, have exhibited those traits for 12 games so far, and he wanted to know whether he could count on the players to commit to doing it for another four. Their answer was an unwavering yes.

UD dropped a 57-49 decision to the Billikens in a game where both teams clawed for 40 minutes. But the Flyers (23-4, 9-3 Atlantic 10) had one of their offensive dry spells in the second half — amassing just two points on a pair of free throws in a seven-minute, 45-second span — and frittered away an otherwise credible showing.

Their intensity was there — they had 22 offensive rebounds and won the board battle, 44-31 — but they couldn’t come up with a single bucket during that nine-possession span.

“We talk about effort and energy and playing hard, and we’ve won 23 games because that’s what we do,” Gregory said. “And you know what, we did it again tonight. You can’t get 22 offensive rebounds unless you’re playing really hard and with great energy. It’s impossible … because those guys knock the crap out of you when the ball goes up, which is the way it should be.

“Did we make a lot of mistakes? Yeah. But we made a lot of mistakes in our wins, too.”

UD’s usual deficiencies were glaring while falling behind by 10 points in the first half. Saint Louis (17-10, 7-5) was coasting and a sell-out crowd was rocking.

The Flyers, though, fought their way back and took their first lead early in the second half. They still led by one after Marcus Johnson drilled a 3-pointer with 10:55 to go. But with a chance to grab the game by the throat, their offense became about as effective as a cell phone in a bomb shelter.

“(It was) a one-point game either way, and kind of lost ourselves,” Gregory said. “We had bad offensive possessions, did not rebound defensively, gave them some options. That cost us the game. But we lost to a good team today on the road in a tough environment against a Hall of Fame coach (Rick Majerus). We need to learn from it, get better and move on. But there’s nothing to be ashamed of losing to that team because they’re playing extremely well right now.”

Charles Little, the team’s lone senior, saw some positives in the defeat, too.

“I thought we played hard. … Our effort was there. We’ve just got to execute better,” he said. “We weren’t very patient on offense, and if you’re not making a team work on defense, it’s pretty easy for them to play offense.”

The Flyers will fall from the Top 25 with the defeat, but what matters is staying on pace for an NCAA tourney bid. The road doesn’t get any easier from here — 20-8 Rhode Island is next — but the Flyers are still in good shape. They know what’s at stake. And if they don’t reach The Dance, it won’t be because the players weren’t committed enough to the task.

A team to play this hard is great, but that effort is the reason they don’t score. They really are not thinking when they have the ball. You would think that if they gave this same effort on the foul line they would have never lost this game. MAKE YOUR FOUL SHOTS!!

What are they using their practices for? The hustle, rebounding, and spirit seem to be there. Why not practice, practice, practice on their offensive shooting, particularly the threes and the free throws??? Good, upbeat spirit. Go get ‘em, Flyers!

The St. Louis game is history. Bad calls, obvious no calls, and very bad free throw shooting are to blame. It’s over, forget it. Winning at Rhode Island will be much more difficult than winning at St. Louis. There is only one way to have a chance to win there—Shut down Jimmie Barron. UD must have someone shadow him everywhere, and not leave him to help out somewhere else on defense. If they leave him, he’ll get the ball back and knock down 30 footers. Make their other players shoot the ball and UD has a chance. I sure hope this is in Coach Gregory’s strategy, otherwise they could be looking at a 4 game losing streak with Temple and Xavier to follow.

That is too funny. Losing to St Louis. Shi-t there are high school teams that can beat them. Our OSU womans team can beat them.

Chris Wright is not ready for the NBA, not because he lacks the athletic ability but because he lacks intelligence. Anyone who would pick UD lacks fundamental intelligence. Chris can try walking on at The Ohio State University. That would be a good first step to showing he has good judgement.

OSU Joe’s posts are like crickets chirping and should be treated as such. You can count on the following from crickets: 1) They will always chirp and do provide some mild entertainment or diversion at times 2)They only can sing one song over and over and 3)There is no real intelligence or thought in what they sing… even if there actually may be a smart cricket making the noise. Note that I am myself an OSU fan though I am a UD alum but I am currently very bored with the cricket chirping incessantly and wish he would say somwthing intelligent or be quiet.

St. Louis is a bad team? Didn’t they beat Boston College, who beat North Carolina. Does that mean North Carolina is bad….OSU must be bad too, since they lost to West Virginia, who lost to Marquette. This could go on forever.

Let’s face it…the Flyers cannot win consistently on the road against what should be sub-par opponents. Rhode Island will smoke them, because they are better than sub-par. Temple will come in and take away the home winning streak and then Xavier will dismantle them in Cincy, becuase they are good. Gone is the NCAA and hello to a first round game in the NIT…maybe…

It was one game to a team that is playing their best basketball. Yes, I wanted to win just like everyone else but it did not work out last night. 23-4…I wish every season was as dismal as this you moron…

Let’s see. North Carolina lost this weekend, as did Oklahoma, Utah St., Tennessee and who knows how many other “good” teams lost. Everybody loses some games. St. Louis has 17 wins and losing on their court isn’t the end of the world. However, UD needs to show that it can bounce back and win at least one of the next 3 games, better yet win 2 of them. Hang in there Flyers!

I like Steven Thomas and would like to see him perform well, as the team really needs him to step up. However, after watching him attempt to play defense the last 2 games, I can see why he wasn’t getting a lot of minutes when LW and RL were both healthy. We’re all pulling for you Steven, keep working on your footwork and keep your eyes on your opponents belly-button, for where the belly-button goes, the body is sure to follow.

Like I said in past posts, St Louis would be a perfect trap game. Get ranked 25th and feel super and bang, look what happens.Majerus is one of the best coaches in the country. Whoever heard of Ball State/Utah before he showed up on their respective campuses. What I saw in last night’s game. St Lou team sure knew how to set a pretty mean “Pick”. Billikens were laying heavy wood on Warren/others from all over the place. Can fellow Flyers call out the High Pick please? It looked like Old Rick was attempting(and succeeding) at wearing down our point motor man Jack Jet via rock hard picks.Plus we got zero help from the one sided refs. Cowboy Up for RI or we’re going to limp into AC Tourney.Steal next one and stop the bleeding..And call out those picks!

Let’s face it…the Flyers cannot win consistently on the road against what should be sub-par opponents. BG can’t get the team to play in the big games.Dayton could have had a full game over X. But like alwaws they can’t pull it off. They need a real big man to do something in the middle.Kurt is one like a little kid in their, can’t score on a layup or hold on to the ball.Cris needs to stop running over people and shoot the short jumper. No one can seem to shoot a foul shout.

This is not the end of the world, UD has struggled on the road forever, top teams even lose games, it’s how they bounce back. X has lost what 3 in a row, UNC lost, c’mon give ‘em a chance to win at RI, they do need to make free throws, and BG does need to tone down the A-10 is great nonsense, how about competitive, but certainly not great. Go Flyers beat RI!!!

You’re an idiot Jim. It just so happens UD’s tougher league games came at the end of the year. After the next three regular seasons games there strength of schedule will be much higher. And don’t use the term “we” as if you’re a UD fan. Your basketball knowledge is that of an “X” fan.

As mentioned above by someone else, all teams lose to teams that they are suppose to beat. UCLA lost at home yesterday to Washington State (a team with a worse record that St. Louis). Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Utah St. (all top 25 teams also lost yesterday to teams they should have beat). Don’t get discouraged Flyers. Deny Jim Barron the ball and make your free throws and you’ll beat Rhode Island.

Please do not use Xavier in the same sentence with UD. There is no comparison between these two programs. When is the last time UD won an NCAA tourney game? Before Chris Wright was born… ummmm … yup. By the way, you idiots, X has not lost 3 games in a row. Dayton F-Liars?

By lc

February 22, 2009 12:38 PM | Link to this

I’m not afraid to admit I’m an X fan. I don’t think that St. Louis is the same team that lost to Detroit earlier. Dayton got a taste of what Xavier has to deal with every road game having entered last night’s game in first place. What’s interesting is that Temple (assuming they beat St. Bonny at home today) and Rhode Island are next on UD’s schedule. UD is going to have to face Rhody at the Ryan Center, which is not an easy place to play. Temple at home is winnable, of course, but this makes for a really interesting match up at the Cintas Center. I can’t wait!!! Should be a great game with alot of intensity from both squads!! I hope the flyers come out with wins against R.I. and Temple and we come out with wins against St. Joes and GW so we play each other for 1st place!

Sorry X has losy 3 of the last 4, calm down Xavier Dave, the point is simply X is a good team, they lost some and have not panicked, so UD shouldn’t either. As for the recent NCAA wins everybody is well aware UD has not done well, but if repeating that over and over makes you happy, knock yourself out. It’s just college basketball, entertainment, more entertaining when your team wins of course, but not worth getting so worked up over in my opinion.X has done a much better job of positioning themselves nationally, scheduling, TV, etc., UD would be wise to follow that, but that doesn’t mean UD can’t play or 23 wins has no mertit.

I won’t be associated with the trash-talkers on this board. They’re probably bandwagon fans, Wright State fan, and feel the need to start something. I merely said that I hope UD plays well in the next few games to make for a rejuvenated UD-XU match-up at Cintas in a few weeks. Let’s face it, UD has not been much of an opponent for XU in recent years and it’d be nice to have more riding on it finally. Conference championship and revenge game motivations will make for a real exciting game I hope. I don’t think UD is overrated. If anything, I don’t think they’ve been given the respect they deserve. That said, it’s going to be tough to come out of Cintas with a W. If UD is to have a chance, they MUST win at R.I. this week.

By lc

February 22, 2009 2:22 PM | Link to this

Last time I checked, this is still a free country and a democratic process, meaning XU fans have just as much right to be on these board as UD fans. From a sportsmanship standpoint, I’d only suggest that my fellow muskie fans act like most of us—let the players and performance do the talking. And, by the way, it’s been a common occurence for UD trash talkers to get on XU boards as well.

UD is over rated. I am a UD fan but X has a better coach. BG cannot seem to get his team to play to their level, they will be lucky to get a NCAA bid. I would love to say they compair to the top teams but the truth is they don’t.BG needs to take control of the team and work their butts off on the foul line and lay ups . Plus replace Krut with someone that has a hunger inside to score. Be strong with the ball.

I missed something. Can the coach come on the floor and shoot for players? Nope. It’s the player who miss the shots - not the coach. Missing 2 of your top players, on the road, early foul trouble, refs not helping, shots not falling, and the game is still in contention with under 90s left. Thanks BG. I appreciate your coaching. -matt

The collective maturity level on this blog is approaching a 3rd grade level. It reflects poorly on DDN that they allow this to continue. Freedom of speech is one thing, but maybe some of you are taking it a bit too far? I agree with you, playing that very weak non-conference schedule has really hurt us. Don’t send emails to BG. Send them to the AD. It is not BG’s fault that we inflated our record playing the weak sisters. Then we play average mid-major schools and lose.

Tom Arch, you’re really going out on a limb saying that UD won’t be ranked tomorrow. I’ll do you one better. I predict that this year UD will lose to Creighton, UMass, Charlotte and SLU. I’ve read it in the tea leaves. Way to state the obvious buddy. And to the overratted chant guy, you act like UD ranked themselves. It wasn’t their choice that they got rated, so why are you mocking them for being rated where they are?

What bothered me most about last night’s game was the reluctance of Mickey Perry to take open shots and Stephen Thomas’s lack of foot speed defensively. Both hurt UD greatly the second half…The team will not be able to sustain winning if it relies on only Marcus Johnson and Chris Wright for consistent scoring.

What some of you have to learn is that you cannot keep evaluating this team after one loss. This team is very inconsistent in its shooting and will drop games because of that. They will not win easily because of that. However, despite this bad shooting they have managed to win 23 of their first 27. If they lose to both RI and Temple, you have all the reason to be upset, but why not see how the team responds. 4 losses, on the schedule, and they have responded well after each. Hopefully CJ is back and close to full strength against RI, they definitely need him in the lineup.

I haven’t had the chance to watch too many UD games this year b/c they don’t get the coverage of Xavier or OSU. But since Dayton was playing Xavier that game was on national TV and it was a pretty convincing beatdown. Usually lately Dayton has had trouble w/ X even at home but this was so enjoyable I watched it 2X. Dayton proved in that game that they are the best team in the A10, horrible refs notwithstanding.

By RudyFlyer

February 22, 2009 9:43 PM | Link to this

Dayton has trouble getting teams to play them in the non-conf schedule. These teams don’t want to agree to a home and home when they will have to come to Dayton like Pitt last year and get their butts kicked. If Dayton can win a couple games in the NCAA, then teams might play us b/c then our rep increases and teams aren’t as afraid to take the loss at UD. That’s how Xavier has been able to improve their non-conf schedule. Plus, some of these games are scheduled far in advance and there is no way to predict how good or bad some teams will be that year. Dayton beat Marquette on a neutral court and it was on a back to back where they beat Auburn in OT the night before. Dayton already proved they can beat Xavier. Flyers, it’s time to shut these X fans up w/ another 2 beatdowns this year. Then you get a higher seed than them and we can rub that in big time. Xavier was clearly tired b/c of your depth. That is your strength. Don’t be afraid to use it.

Didn’t OSU lose today? And, aren’t they 7-7 in their conference? Yes to both questions. So, why would Chris Wright want to play for a second rate farm team for the NBA?

Watch out for the NIT bound Dayton Flyers. NIT is what their fans always talk about…… I know most of you have heard this: Flyer Fan,” The NIT used to be the bigger tournament, and Dayton was really good in the NIT in the 60’s……” Who cares. The NIT started out as an eight team tournament, and when UD was doing well in the NIT it was a 16 team tournament. To get in was all politics. It wasn’t who you know but who you blow, and UD was blowing the then chairman of the NIT. UD is sooooooooooooo over rated. Go back to the NIT, it is where you want to go, it is where you need to be, it is you density. Ohio State has been to TEN final fours, UD One. One. One is the height in feet that Brian Gregory is. One is the number of attractive woman at UD. One is before two, and UD played like number TWO if you know what I mean. GO Xavier! Go Bucks! Go UD to the NIT!!!!!!

Why such hate? OSU and Xavier might still make the NCAA. Although OSU at 7-7, w/ 3 losses in a row, in 7th place in the B10, you’re not looking good. See, numbers do matter and those sevens are pointing to the NIT. Dayton has lost One in a row and has won 9 0f its last 11 games and they beat Xavier pretty easily and handily recently. I enjoyed it so much that I watched it 2X. I can send you a recording of it for your educational purposes in basketball and math. Xavier has lost three out of its last five games. Admittedly those losses were on the road but 2 of the next 3 games are on the road and the one home game is against Dayton, a team that knows it can beat you from a recent beating. One thing that was really obvious in that last loss was that Xavier got tired by Dayton’s depth even though one of our top players was out. Beat them with your depth Dayton.

I can’t believe that all the retarded X fans are talking about “over rated” when XU lost 3 out of 4 games while being ranked in the top 20. Talk about looking pathetic to a national audience. Now thats what I call over rated! I guess the only way X fans can hide their shame is to rag on UD losing just 1 game to a good team on the road. Keep enjoying being the little fish in the big pond that is Cincinnati! Poor XU they just wish they could be in the Big East too. Or not because then they would be in the same spot at DePaul. Losers!

Greg- Sinclair is for losers. You are a loser and UD is over rated. Xavier is better than UD the last 25 years. Sinclair Grad - big deal.

Comparing OSU with a mid-major like UD is laughable. UD would get their asses kicked in in the Big 10.

Hey Marky Mark and “Sally” Mid major conferences do not send over half of thier teams to the post season, check you books from last year. The only way the Horizon will get more than one team into the post season is if someone else besides Butler wins the league tournament

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. UD must put their back bone where their wish bone is. They need to play more effective offense, make foul shots and some players need to step up. They will get exactly what they earn from here on out. This is winning time. Losing will gain them an NCAA snub again.

One of the top Big 10 teams, Illinois, held Penn State last week to 38 points. The rub is, however, that they lost that HOME game because they only managed to score 33 points! But they did redeem themselves yesterday by beating the mighty Buckeyes. Yeah, the Big 10 is a basketball powerhouse…

Doug it is great to read your articles. I am currently in Layton Utah as the head coach of Layton Christian Academy. Doug, maybe you can help me with this question why is Mike Haley not in the OHSSA hall of fame? He has the greater winning percentage than many of the coaches that has gone in before him (if not of all time). Would you please get back to me, you have my email address and my cell phone is 801-603-0405. Thanks Doug Bobby Porter

I’ve followed Flyer B-Ball for 45 years. Was ther when May took us to Final 2. This is my 1st and last visit to this site. Ignorant and off-color comments are from boors who don’t want to talk B-Ball. The spelling and grammar are atrocious, too. Adios.

Losing RL is serious. FLYERS now have no point-guard who is an offensive threat. Steezy Thomas is to slow against quick guards. Need Perry and Chris J to hit some threes to open up the lanes. RL injury is a bad, bad, bad, bad, loss to the FLYERS..
