Flyers fall in overtime at Rhode Island
KINGSTON, R.I. — Dayton overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to force overtime, but Rhode Island’s Marquis Jones scored on a driving lay-up as the clock was expiring in the extra session to give the Rams a 93-91 victory Wednesday.
Marcus Johnson led five players in double figures with 21 to lead UD (23-5, 9-4 Atlantic 10). The Rams (21-8, 10-4) made 10-of-17 three-pointers

I know it’s coming, but don’t start with the hating…UD played a good game against a good team on the road. Yes, they could have shot free throws better, but this game may be more damaging psychologically than it is NCAA wise.By George

I am an avid Flyer Fan, and it seems that as soon as there is talk about them breaking into the top 25, the team begins to falter. R.I s a good team., but UD needs to get it together since time is running out until Selection Sunday. I hop they can pull it together and finish strong, since the A-10 will probably allowed only two teams in the big dance. We have too many talented players not to get invited.By UD NIT BOUND!!!

Over rated? Me thinks… buts they is a not a rated a right a now a. Hating on UD is easy, they are average, they WILL LOSE TO TEMPLE AND XAVIER, fail to make the NCAA, host and NIT game Wed at the arena. You will get play in game tues, wed for the NIT game with Dayton, Thurs and Sat NCAA games at UD. Dayton will be the basketball capital of the world. UD fans are soooooooooo knowledgeable, sooooooooo passionate. Good Fans I say. Good. No! Great fans I say. Great. Great I say. UD fans a winners, the clean up and sell, sell, sell. You have to win at St. Louis and Rhode Island if you want to go to the big dance.. These teams are not that good. So Dayton cannot complain if they don’t go this year.. Another game they gave away..By Big Flyer Fan

First round NIT verses Cleveland State. I can feel it coming. God awful St Louis got killed by St Bonnie. We need to beef up our non-conference schedule. Playing the Coppin States and bottom 50 teams is getting old. look at St Joe’s, they were 4-7 in non-conference yet they are world beaters in the A-10. Just goes to show the A10 sucks. I’m going to bed and am going to punch the ground for a while… Pissed off!!!!By misery

I am not sure if I can watch this happen another year, last year after we beat Pitt, there was no way they could keep us out of the tourney, now this year the victory over xavier feels like it was years ago, and unless we can pull it together we are looking at the NIT againBy Gutty Performance

We are going to NIT because (1) we play a weak non-conference schedule, (2) we suck on the road. I’m beginning to warm up to a home and home series early in the season against Wright State so we can get a road win. Beat the s**t out of those &^%$#.By Steve

I hate to complain because they play so hard, but WHY is Huelsman given so much playing time ? HE IS NOT GOOD !! I started counting the times he got the ball and either: A Lost it B Missed a gimmee C Looked dumbfounded that he had the ball AND HE IS WORSE ON DEFENSE !! Sorry, but if you want to win you have to play your best players.By penngable

Like I said earlier, this was not a bad NCAA loss…but knew the haters were coming. Not looking for everyone to look at the world with rose colored glasses, just some intelligent basketball discussion. Clearly this is not the place to find it. Disappointing loss without a doubut, but questioning UD the level of play tonight is ignorant..congratulations DDN you have lost another out of town alum who looked to this site as a way to stay in touch.By Ray Z

Dayton isn’t even a good team in the A10. They are mediocre at best in an also ran conference. It is time for the AD to evaluate what Brian Gregory brings to this program. He supposedly recruits these great players who have trouble delivering. Not one recruit has improved since they have been at UD. They all languish. Chris Wright should transfer; at least he would have a shot at an NCAA appearance at another school. Another well deserved invite to the NIT. Dayton basketball as a top flight program is a thing of the past.By Brian

Huelsman plays about 2 1/2 times more than Searcy, yet Searcy scores almost twice as many points. When is BG going to get this through his head? Not to mention that Searcy is better at the foul line and would have had a better chance on stopping that final drive/basket by R.I.By brian

Why are we wasting a scholarship on Hulesman. There was no reason for him to switch on that last play. He left London to play the big man and he still wasn’t able to stop the little guy. How many times have we heard Bucky say “he missed it point blank”. Sure wish Searcy would get his act together so he can take over that spot full time.By Bam-Bam

I hadn’t read the other comments before mine but I must be on the right track with Hulesman and Searcy. How can a big man have so much playing time and avg. 4 pts. a game. Oh yeah, and the free throws didn’t help. Have you noticed Chris W. can’t hit the broad side of a barn. His best weapon is a dunk if he doesn’t get a charge call.By John

Stop the pity talk. Dayton will be in the NCAA. Out of all the games on the conference schedule at St. Louis, Rhode Island, and Xavier were all losses before conference play. UD beats temple and duquesne they have an automatic.By Jerseyflyer

Chill out haters. Fly Boys played a pretty good team on their home court and took em to ot.CDub hacks out once again. Why was he allowed to even guard Seawright at end of regulation?Still, they almost stole this game but let it slip away. Foul shooting remains a major problem for this squad. If I’m scouting for opposition, I plan game around this deficiency. UD is a good team but you go one and done in ANY Tourney if you fail at charity stripe. Finish out 2-1 and and take team to AC 25-6.Not bad. Question: Why was CJ even allowed to play at all tonight? Don’t understand that one.Let’s hope he did not strain calf muscle anymore than before.By x marks the spot

BG. That’s what I was saying. He played briefly in first half. I mean the kid had trouble in pre game walk around this morning! I’d have had him in street clothes and nailed to the bench. Hope he’s a healthy go for Temple.By RI Ram Fan

I was at the game tonight, and it was one of 3 or 4 best at Ryan Ctr (7 years old). UD has nothing to be ashamed of—except perhaps their free throw shooting. URI’s only double-digit loss all season was vs. Villanova (12 points or so) at “neutral” site 2 miles from ‘Nova’s campus, so we are a pretty decent team. Having said that, UD wins tonight if they shoot FT better in Regulation.By bub

Why was London Warren under the basket hugging a 280 pound center on that last drive?? He should have been ON THE BALL… he could have stolen the ball and at least forced another overtime. There should have been someone applying pressure AND someone protecting the lane! THAT mismatch lost the game. Nonetheless… Dayton DID do well (minus the free-throws). Once again, there were some very bad calls… the block that was called goal tending was crucial. An overtime loss, on the road, to a strong team is not a bad loss. Free throws would have made the difference… but hey, you can’t ask for do-overs! Kudos to Mickey Perry for the shooting and to Devin Searcy. We really miss Rob Lowery on defense! Time to move on.By Mike

Dayton played a tough game on the road. Could have won if they would have just made a few more free throws, but none the less, they still played hard. They lost to a good team in OT by 1 point on the road. Nothing to be ashamed of, but they will have only themselves to blame if they don’t make the NCAA.By Raoul

Dissapointing loss, but what a basketball game! That was about as good as college ball gets. Dayton will win 2 out of last 3, at least one maybe 2 in the A10 tournemant, and be 1 of 3 from A10 invited to the Dance. Keep the Faith.By Bhoops

Many things contributed to the loss last night, including poor free throws, no RL or CJ, and lack luster defense in first half. HOWEVER, WHY IN THE HECK WOULD YOU SEND SLOW KURT HUELSMAN TO “JUMPSWITCH” A SCREEN ON THE BALL WHEN THE LAST THING YOU WANT IS A BIG LITTLE MATCHUP AND AN OPEN LANE TO THE BASKET? WOW…. There are several strategies to defend ball screens, and a good team has to have all these in their arsenal. I have watched the FLYERS all year, and it appears BG only teaches one way. (TO JUMPSWITCH) A JUMPSWITCH is when the bigs “jump out”, leaving their man to step in front of the guard with whom is being screened for with the idea to stop any open looks off the screen. This is effective when you have a guard with whom you don’t want to have an open look off the screen. However, it poses an extreme liability. The liability is that the man being screened (LW) does not recover fast enough and you are exposed with a BIG-LITLLE matchup. This is exactly what happened. BG choose for KH to “jumpswitch” the ball screen. KH stepped out to far and LW did not recover back to his man fast enough. All of a sudden, you have KH guarding their PG and LW guarding their post player. Bad, Bad, Bad…. A jumpswitch was not needed and cost the FLYERS the game. Instead, KH should have “Shown” (slightly step out to slow guard coming off screen, not overcommitting and completely jumping out) To help and recover, would have been quick transition which would have obstucted their PG to an open look, and would have allowed LW to recover back to his man. Jumpswitch teaches a big to over commit and leave his man completely, with hopes the proper rotation occurs and everyone ends back up on their man. I am a former college player and coach and this may seem like a small detail. However, it cost the FLYERS the game. A “JUMPSWITCH” is effective in certain situations, specifically when you want to eliminate the guy being screened from an open three. However, the last thing you would want in a situation like last night, was a poor rotation and KH stuck defending thier point guard. POOR POOR POOR coaching… The FLYERS coaching staff should have been aware of this and not put thier players in that situation.By sec 312

I agree with the comments regarding Hulesman. He is a back up at best. He plays his best but he will never be an asset in the big dance. Need to recruit a true center and a shooting guard. Next year is where UD will shine. Benson will be on line. Wright will probably go pro after next year so we need to look for next year to be our best year in decades. Even if we get to the dance this year our center and our guard will assure us of an early exit. UD needs to have the mindset to win the tournament not just to be estatic to get in.
