Duquesne bounces UD from tourney
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Aaron Jackson and Melquan Bolding scored 24 points apiece to lead seventh-seeded Duquesne to a 77-66 upset of third-seeded Dayton in the Atlantic 10 semifinals Friday.
UD fell behind by six at the half and trailed by as many as 16 in the second half.
Mickey Perry had 15 points, Charles Little 13 and Chris Wright 12 for the Flyers (26-7), who expect to receive an NCAA at-large bid Sunday.
Duquesne (21-11) will face Temple (21-11) for the A-10 tourney crown and the league’s automatic NCAA bid at 6 p.m. Sunday on ESPN2.

Nuts!! Still, it’s been a great season, and it’s not over yet. Thank you Flyers for a great year!By Lax20

Tough to beat a good team 3 times. Dayton should be in, but it doesn’t help with all the upsets in the power conferences and Xavier losing. You need a tournament bound team to win their conference tournaments. A bubble team or non NCAA tournament qualifier team wins, it will hurt.By NickM

Dayton is horrible. Cant shoot free throws, cant shoot threes, cant shoot jumpers, cant hit layups, no inside game, too many turnovers. This team has been overrated all year. Huelsman is the worst player i have ever seen wear a flyer uniform. Hes useless. All this team can do is dunk. Wright is overrated. Just like Brooks Hall. One and done if we do get in. Heck, all they have to do is foul us if the game is close. Lets get a coach who can teach these guys something besides how to drive and dunk. You know, like how to hit a layup or a free throw? No way three teams from the A10 get in.By Wow

Worst possible scenario for Flyers. RPI should get them in but I thought that last year and we all know how that ended up. I’m sorry but this team just can’t win a big game in a big spot. It’s that simple.By Flyin' Low

Nice job once again this year Brian Gag-ory. Don’t worry Flyer faithful - he ain’t going nowhere. With back to back NIT bids he will be lucky to keep his job at UD.By Bound

NickM, you are dead on, except your last line. UD and X are going, and if the Dukes win tomorrow, the A10 could get 4. Dayton’s RPI is just too high to not get in, and the Dukes record helps their S.O.S. Lax20, the Dukes are not a good team, and Dayton had nothing to worry about for the tourney. Dr. Bracketology is usually only wrong on 1 or 2 teams at most, and Dayton is secure. After tonight, I think UD belongs in the NIT, but they are NCAA bound. I hope BG invites Bob Knight into the locker room to let the kids from UD know how they played tonight. Honestly, BG was in a hurry to yell at those guys tonight. Before I end this, how do you win 26 games when you have no post man? I cannon wait for Josh Benson.By jon

A-10 getting 3 teams? Hope so but feel that is unlikely, UD thought they were in last year, and well NIT, this year? Can’t win big games, very poor free throw shooting, poor on 3’s, and it seems EVERY time they control thier own fate, CHOKE!!! And I couldn’t agree more on Huelsman is really bad, not laying losses just on him, but he stinks.Fact is Temple and Duq. are just not that good, and it points out how weak the A-10 is.By NickM

To all those who were worried about Chris Wright transfering to a bigger school…dont worry. No one else would take him. Hes the most overrated play in Dayton basketball history. At least Brooks Hall could hit a free throw. All the guy can do is dunk. Chris, if you think Duke would want you, go for it. Maybe Coach Gagory will recruit someone who can actually hit a jumper or a free throw. I doubt it. Hey, heres an idea coach! How about getting a point guard who will shoot a wide open shot? Warren is so scared to shoot its pathetic. Tonight was pathetic. Expect more of the same in the tourney.By DavidUDUK

Why did UD not have Luke Fabrizius in the game earlier with UD down by 11 or so? It made no sense to put him in with 2 minutes remaining and the game lost.By NickM

texasfan, you have been downgraded to idiot. Last year Dayton was on the buddle due to losing 10/13 games, and going 8-8 in conf. This year, they went 11-5, that is a major difference, though it may not seem that way. Forget this talk of UD in the NIT. I know what I am talking about, and I am smarter that the rest of you. NickM, you may not like UD, and you made good points in your last post, but Wright’s, and any power forward’s success depends on the play from the point guard, and Warren was awful tonight. I do fully agree that he is afraid to shoot. He must thow bricks in shoot arounds, cause no one even worries that he MIGHT shoot. A-10, 3 bids regardless, maybe 4 is Duquesne wins tomorrow.By Buckeye

What a bunch of whiners. UD will probably get in anyway. Now some good bubble team like MN or OSU or Wisconsin will not make the Tourney since the A10 will get an automatic bid. They couldn’t beat ANY of the above listed teams in the Tourney. Overrated.By texasfan

Bound you’re right what a genius you are resorting to 5th grade name calling…so who’s the idiot? You are a class A-1 jerk. People are just giving thier opinions, and I hope UD does make the NCAA of course, just skeptical the A-10 gets 3 teams in. But hide behind your screen name and name call all you want if it makes you feel better.By Buckeye

Bound, I LOVE UD. I have been a UD fan for 27 years. Negele Knight and Ryan Perryman were like heros growing up. Im just tired of watching games like tonight. Im tired of Gregory. How in your right mind can you start a guy all year at C/F who averages 3 pts 4 rbs? Hes a foot from the basket when he raises his freakin arms!! Fabrizious hits 17 against Duq last game, and hardly plays eleven freakin min tonight! ELEVEN! He hits two straight threes against Rich and Gregory sits him! The guys calling the richmond game last night were talking about how laid back and relaxed UDs shoot arounds are. How they shoot in their street cloths! HUH?!? Have you seen this team shoot? Have you seen this team shoot free throws? How can their shoot arounds be relaxed? Gregory is horrible. Thats why i dont like them.By BJ

When you play Huelsgirl and the Jet at the same time it’s 5 on 3 ball for the opposition and there is no way Dayton can win with that combination. KH didn’t even take a fricken shot tonight. How many teams in the country can claim there starting center didn’t take a shot in a conference semi final? What a joke this team is and there lousy coach. GET RID OF GREGORY!!!By vegasalum

NickM, you and I have agreed 100% with the exception of your comments about Wright and the A-10 getting 3 teams in. It would have been 2 if X or UD would have won tomorrow. I misread that you are infact a UD fan, but your frustration from tonight is showing. So is mine. Buckeye, you dumb-chyt. Of course I am crytical of Warren tonight. He has been huge for UD, but was off tonight. He missed the alley-oop pass 5 times! I do not talk trash, and I do root for UD. They cost themselves a 6 or 7 seed, and are not looking at a 10 or 11 (which I prefer over an 8 or 9). Now they need to play with the desire they did against Marquette. texasfan, you are an idiot, and have been upgraded to first class major idiot. Name calling is “Poopy-Head” or “Nose-Picker”, but you……..you’re just a plain old idiot. THE ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE IS GETTING 3 OR 4 TEAMS INTO THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. Another comment I missed last time. Chris Wright is not leaving UD. That is a rumor that started on a bogus website. If he has a good enough year next year, he could consider the next level, but Chris Wright will be a Flyer next year. I hate that this issue keeps coming up. If anyone buys into that being possible, they need their head examined.By NickM

In the last two games against Duquesne, good ol Kurt Huelsman played 33 min. He had a grand total of ONE FREAKIN POINT. Luke Fabrizious (remember, hes a freshman) played 23 min and scored 23 points. Anyone wanna tell me why Huelsman is on the court? Gregory, go back to Michigan State. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that Heulsman should be riding the bench. The worst part about it, is that Kurt still has another year at UD. God I hope Benson plays well next year. By the way, before anyone comes in saying that Huelsman is a center and luke is a forward…Kurt is listed as a c/f and hes only listed as one inch taller than Luke. Luke has been Kurts primary sub.By amanda

Buckeye-the big ten is overrated. Big ten basketball is awful. Watching paint dry is more exciting than watching a big ten game. It is the lower end big ten teams that should be bounced from the tourney. Dayton is in with 26 wins and an rpi of 22. No question about it. They will get a 9 or 10 seed. Espn has 3 A-10 teams going. I just hope Dayton draws one of the weak lower tier big ten teams so they can win a game in the tourney.By NickM

Bound, maybe im being too hard on Wright. He is a sophomore. BUT hes not the player UD fans try to make him out to be. Hes a great athlete. Ill give him that. He can jump out of the building no question. The dunk against marquette was one of the most amazing things i have ever seen from a UD athlete. But it takes more than that to be a good basketball player. He has one skill. Driving to the basket. He cant shoot free throws, he cant post up, and he cant hit the jumper with any kind of consistancy. Hes like a poor mans Deaquan Cook. He needed to step up tonight and last night and he didnt do it. Maybe he will as a senior. To get to your point, no i dont think and never did think he would leave UD. I was just trying to make a point to the people who thought he was too good for this program. Hes not. At least not as a soph. Im just frustrated like you said. Im just tired of gregory recruiting players who cant to the fundamental things like hit a free throw. Most of this is ESPNs fault. High School kids dont care about free throws. Free throws dont make the plays of the night. Dunks do.By Buckeye

Amanda, the Big 10 plays great defense. UD couldn’t hang with em especially with KH at center. I agree with Bound, he should sit, but its a loyalty thing with GH. The Big Ten seems boring because of the great defense. To each their own, I agree its not pretty to watch, but do you honestly (drop your UD bias) believe UD can run with OSU, MN, Illinois. I think Northwestern can beat them most of the time and they won’t even make the Tourney this year. I watch all of these games, and do attend some UD games because a relative is a season ticket holder. I don’t hate UD, I am just speaking my opinion.By amanda

The score of the ohio state-penn state game last week at halftime was 25 to 15. That’s some quality basketball right there. the A10 should get 3 teams in. Xavier lost to Duquesne earlier in the season and got bounced the same time dayton did in the a10 tourney. I don’t hear anyone screaming about them not making it. anyone who thinks Dayton is nit bound is crazy.By Buckeye

Somebody should be NIT bound. I would take Xavier over UD anyday. But, they should be ashamed of themselves too. Neither team was hungry since they thought they were already in the NCAA Tourney. It would serve someone right, if they don’t get in. UD was screwed last year, so it could happen. I thought they deserved to be in last year, but not this year. They WILL be in I think however.By NickM

Buckeye, why do you say that just because someone never PLAYED organized basketball, they cant criticize players? I never played past junior high, but i know bad basketball when i see it. I dont have to be able to play the game to know that a team that cant hit more than 50% of its free throws is pathetic. I dont have to know how to run a pick and roll to see that a guy who averages 3 points a game should sit when his backup goes for 17 in the previous game against a team. Just because someone didnt play, doesnt mean they have no knowledge of the game.By PoetWarrior

26-7 and you are tired of Gregory? Are You exhausted watching the Flyer program being built the right way…maybe you would like to call Kelvin Sampson or Billy Gillispie…what’s Jim O’Brien doing beside counting his 3 million with Aleksandar Radojevic…maybe he’s available. Luke doesn’t play PT minutes because he doesn’t play Defense…and defense got this team an NCAA bid…If Luke stops playing “EL TORO” with opposing teams driving the lane, he’ll play more…UD basketball’s future hasn’t looked this bright for decades, but you’re too tired to see it…We want a quick fix to a tired program-Call Memphis coach John Calipari and team GPA of .005….waaaaaa! Be careful what you wish for NICKM, BG’s name is already being brought up to fill some of the BIG BCS coaching jobs. How many of those local recruits stay if goes? 26-7, at large birth in the NCAA…and you are tired. Get some sleep and stay off the internet.By NickM

Amanda, when Dayton plays as tough of a non conf schedule as Xavier does, i will listen to your argument. Trust me. I HATE Xavier. But if i had to pick one or the other to send to the NCAA, it wouldnt be Dayton. As far as your argument about the Big 10 and the penn state ohio state halftime score? NickM, I wasn’t referring to you, but…Yes, you don’t have to play to judge a player’s ability. I was referring to Bound’s bantering and making it personal. It’s not easy to score at will. There is an opposing player trying to shut you down. Sometimes you just don’t have the right rhythm. Sometimes, like in the UD duq game, the other team is just hungrier (there is no excuse for that however). Amanda was talking about Big Ten basketball and their low scoring games. That isn’t always because of poor offense, but because of outstanding defense, which in my opinion the Big Ten does well. The Big Ten is overrated in Football (well not anymore, lol), but underrated in basketball. Watch MSU go far, and OSU get past the first round. Just watch. UD will be one and one unless they get a favorable matchup.By NickM

PoetWarrior.. 26-7 against WHO? Wofford? Coppin State? BETHUNE-COOKMAN?!?! Troy? Mercer?? Delaware State? REALLY?? LOL. Thats all i have to say. Put UD in the ACC and they dont win 5 games in conf. play. Also, the only people who care about a teams GPA are…well, ill get back to you on that. I cant think of anyone. Im sorry. Im not happy with one and done every three years in the NCAA. As long as your hero Gregory keeps bringing in players who cant hit layups or free throws or protect a basketball, thats what you’ll get. One and done in the NCAA every three years. But hey, at least they get in done in the classroom right? LOL.By Buckeye

UD is lucky to have Brian Gregory. He won’t be in Dayton long though. He is a disciple of Tom Izzo’s and will be getting a better job offer in a few years and will bolt. Not that I blame him. UD is a great school, but there is only so much you can do there basketball wise with recruiting, etc. I see BG getting a big conference job. You guys are lucky to have him, but are too blind to see it. It would be great if Clemson (Oliver Purnell) played UD in the first round, but that won’t happen.By Buckeye

NickM, I agree with some of the things you have posted tonight, But, UD is not in the league of the ACC, and never will be. It doesn’t have that tradition, and recruiting, etc. etc. They are between a mid major and a major conference in my opinion. But, there are schools like Butler, Creighton that get the job done better, I will agree that aren’t major schools. I agree GPAs are overrated these days. These are athlete/”students” (most of them anyway), not student/athletes. Is that right? Maybe not, but that is the state of college athletics. You are at a huge disadvantage when GPA holds you back from recruiting. UD probably does make grades more of a priority with its Catholic tradition and all (I don’t know, I am not an insider at UD). A lot of guys in college hoops now, would be struggling at Jr. College, and they get a lot of help from what I hear.By amanda

If the big ten plays such great defense than why isn’t there a big ten team ranked in the top 30 defensively? Xavier is ranked higher defensively than any big ten team and Dayton beat them. There are about 10 teams that have been on the bubble for the past 6 weeks-Dayton is not one of them. They are not going to keep a team with 26 wins, a 22 rpi, and a record of 8 and 4 against the rpi top 100 out of the tournament just because they don’t want 3 A-10 teams in. Some of you people act like the A10 has never had more than 2 teams in before.By Matt

Please do some research before opening my mouth? What a mature well thought out response. You do realize that Dayton beat other teams like Marquette besides the ones you CHOSE to mention in your little rant. It makes sense for people who are fans of the flyers to be on a dayton website discussing their support for the team. The people that choose to bad mouth them clearly are trolls who have nothing better to do with their lives than to log on to a website and bad mouth a home town team. What exactly is the point of that? Why not visit acc or big ten websites and chat with fans on there if you think UD basketball is so awful? Is someone forcing you to log on to this website and click on sports to get the Flyer news? There are plenty of other sports sites you can go to if you despise the dayton basketball team so much.By NickM

Buckeye, UD doesnt have that tradition? How old are you? UD had more wins in the 50s and 60s than any team in college basketball. Including UCLA. I may not be very old, but i know my history. Im not saying we sould be in the final four every year. Im jsut saying one and done in the NCAA once every few years doesn not cut it. There is no reason, with our history and tradition that we shouldnt be up there with teams like Xavier and Louisville.By NickM

Amanda, has it ever entered your mind that I LOVE Dayton basketball, but this isnt the Dayton basketball that that my dad and grandfather talked about and it drives me crazy? This team won 23 of their 26 games by playing horrible teams. Yes, the marquette win was a big win. As were the wins against X and maybe Auburn. But look at the rest of the season. We cant win on the road. We cant hit free throws. We will be one and done in the Tourney and thats just ok with everyone. Im tired or watching bad basketball. Tonight was bad basketball. Some of you guys need to take off your homer glasses and really look at this team. Its not very good. Im sorry if that makes me a bad fan. I just choose to look at the real picture. Of the 33 teams dayton played this year, only 12 were ranked in the top 100. Thats why we are 26-7. Why do you think that 19 of the top 25 teams have fewer wins than UD, but are ranked ahead of us?By Duke

Dayton should be nowhere near the NCAA Tournament. I am sorry, but this is an NIT team. I would rather they make the NIT and win it or play deep into the tournament than play one and done in the NCAAs. This would give them games at home and a chance to play more basketball together. That allows them the ability to become stronger next year. I am not a Gregory fan. There is no basic offensive strategy that is evident when I watch them play. I say send him on up to a BCS school and let’s seriously search for a coach who can take us to the NCAA’s every year.By Jim O'Hora

People….one and one in the big dance is much better than winning a few games in the NIT. You play to make the big dance. You get recruits because you made it to the big dance. You really think you can tell a high school kid….hey….we made the NIT last year. Big deal!!! He will laugh at you. I’ve been critical of the Flyers because I want success in the tourney coming up. We all do. When UD’s name appears on the bracket Sunday night these bad losses will be forgotten and it’s time to concentrate on our first round game.By Duke

I would love to see them in the NCAA’s, but let’s be realistic, this team is no freakin 5 seed let alone a 7 seed. This is a 8-9-10 seed team. They will get bounced out after one game and I am critical as a Flyer fan. For almost 40 years I have seen this too many times. It sucks to get hopes up like I did again yet last night only to once again be let down. I would love to see the Flyers win the NIT rather than to see them play one game in the NCAA’s where they show up and stink like they did yet again last night. Like they did at Xavier. What recruit will say…Oh yeah I saw that game in the NCAA’s against (insert name of school that beats UD in the 1st round)that ended with UD getting trounced, because they can’t shoot from outside, shoot free throws, or because they don’t have any set offensive game plan? Dayton doesn’t seem like my kind of place to go, is the response we will get…By Michael

I’m amazed at the amount of people who act like UD losing a game is the end of the world and start wildly pointing fingers. They’ve lost some games. So what? They’ve played some “easy” teams. So what? If they didn’t deserve to be in the Big Dance, they wouldn’t have been in the bracketology all season and the selection committee wouldn’t even consider them. No one would have talked about them. This team is exciting and talented. Not every team is perfect. All have strengths and weaknesses. Let’s not get so hung up on who is to blame for losses. It happens. Ranked teams lose to nobodys all season long, especially lately. Why, the #1 team has been knocked off 8 times this season! You win some, you lose some. We all have good days and bad days. Cut some slack, guys. GO FLYERS!By Mike Alumni

Although you’re point is well taken, I think what has to make everybody nervous is how we’ve played since the big win at home against X & at Rhode Island. 7-5 down the stretch, playing not to lose, cyo-like free throw shooting (mental not physical) the rotation has had to change (injuries)dramatically. We need to play to our potential or unfortunately, we simply won’t be competitive. This team has reaised the bar and now they need to peak. Go Flyer’s…Our Team, Our Town!
