UD will meet West Virginia in first round of NCAA tournament

Dayton is in the Big Dance. UD will take on West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday in Minneapolis.

The game, which will be played at the spacious Metrodome, tips off at approximately 3 p.m.

UD is a No. 11 seed and takes a 26-7 record into the tourney. West Virginia, out of the Big East, is a No. 6 seed. The winner takes on either Kansas or North Dakota State in the second round. The Jayhawks and Bison play at 12:30 p.m.

The Flyers, as it turned out, were “on the bubble.” UD was one of the last three at-large teams to be selected for the tourney. The last two: No. 12 seeds Arizona and Wisconsin.

UD was one of only four at-large teams from the non-power conferences. The other three: Xavier (A-10), Butler (Horizon) and BYU (Mountain West).

This marks UD’s 14th NCAA tourney appearance. The Flyers have lost their last four tourney games, their last win coming in the first round of the 1990 tourney, 88-86 over Illinois in Austin, Texas.

UD is 13-15 all-time in the tournament.

The Flyers were a No. 10 seed in their last tourney appearance, losing to DePaul 76-69 in double overtime in 2004 in Buffalo, N.Y.

Go Flyers!!! UD has as good a draw as could be expected all things considered, and at least a reasonable shot to win one.

Wow… this will be a challenging game. Huggins is a veteran coach and you KNOW he will identify and exploit UD’s offensive weaknesses. Let’s hope BG develops a clear game plan and is SMART during the game. Please utilize Chris Johnson and Luke Fabrizius! Tough draw! But we’re IN!! Go Flyers!!

Marty….CW isn’t going anywhere next year but back to classes. He’s not even close to being ready for the next level. C’mon dude!!! No jump shot and can’t create a shot. That won’t cut it in the NBA!!!

By Joe

March 15, 2009 7:16 PM | Link to this

Marty, what makes you and others think Chris Wright is leaving? He wants to play here and he’s not good enough for the NBA, yet. He essentially just finished his freshman considering how long he was out last year. Another thought, X a four seed. I don’t get that. How about two 1 seeds coming to Dayton.

NCAA disrespect for Flyer program knows no end. Our RPI is 25 and we’re a bubble “in” What a Joke! This whole selection process stinks of favoritism. NC/Duke get to play/stay in NC. UConn gets West Reg which just so happens to be in Philly.Nova plays where? Philly. For all the sellouts UD Arena’s Gary McCann and staff have delivered over the many years to NCAA coffers, you’d think they’d toss us a bone/home game. NOT! OSU losers get the bone/hour drive down. Hope they lose. Hey, bet Jamie Dixon has sweet memories of UD Arena. Don’t get tight Pitt or you’ll be out. GO FLYERS.Beat that criminal Bobby “Balls” Huggins and his Hillrats.Hope he wears his Serbian Henchmen Black on Black outfit. What a CREEP.

O.K. Lets all get behind our team … we played a weak schedule, have no offence and can’t win on the road. If its about going to the Big Dance, lets play the same schools again next year. If we want to really dance, lets play someone. We have the weakest schedule of any top 25 team.

Glad to see that 5 Ohio schools made it into the dance. OSU figured to be no worse then a 7 seed after defeating Michigan St. I like Louisville but hope to see OSU in Indy as I have tickets to the regionals. It would be a long shot to see Dayton & Ohio State in the sweet 16. Stranger things have happened. At least you don’t have to travel to Idaho for the games as Xavier fans. Go Bucks Go Flyers

Say what you want about Huggins and all of his personal problems but, the man can flat out coach. How many of UD’s losses would have been won if a Huggins type was our coach? Probably would have ended up with 1-2 losses at the most?

By PAFlyer

March 15, 2009 7:41 PM | Link to this

Of course this process stinks of favoritism. It’s called “maximizing TV ratings.” Do you think TV ratings will be better if UD or Kansas/WVU goes to the Sweet 16? It’s time for UD to stop pining away for their glory days to return, and to actually get a clue how to advance in the 21st century. Here’s a hint: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. And the ‘them’ is the BCS. Xavier and UD should approach the Big East. Together with ND, they would round out a western contingent of Catholic, private schools and help compete for media ratings in the midwest. It’s not as far-fetched as it seems.

JerseyFlyer - No team can play a game on their true home court, therefore the best shot at a close game UD had was to play at say a Philly or Memphis bracket. GO FLYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By bub

I would much prefer the odds of Luke hitting 5 of 10 3-pointers to seeing Huelsman miss every shot and score ZERO, or for London to hold the ball wide-open and not shoot. London and Huelsman on the floor at the same time spells disaster… let’s hope BG finally gets a clue with that… or someone lights a fire under Huelsman’s behind.

Getting to the dance is a real surprise for me bacause NO ONE in the East Coast media has even mentioned the University of Dayton as a candidate for the tournament. Now we have a chance to show how much spirit we Flyer fans really have and how hard our team plays the game. It’s time to be “born again” as an offensive team. Play as we did against Marquette and we’ll give Coach Huggins a chance to be an announcer.

Scuba. I hear ya. But UD does so much for NCAA each time they come in for 1st&2nd rounds. They flat out love the Arena and the great people of Dayton. Getting these games is a super plus for UD.But can NCAA BigWigs repay us like they always do with the other schools? Nova playing any where in PHILLY is a home game. That’s a FACT. Greensboro NC is a HOME GAME all the way for Duke/NC.There is no doubting that. OSU in Dayton/Louisville in Dayton=homegame for them.Enough ranting from me. Let’s man up and get ready for Radovic”The Serbian Mobster” Huggins. He’ll bring a top notch game plan with him to Minny. BG. Time to earn the check my main man. Go Flyers.

You guys do realize that only the 1-4 seeds are the ones that the committee really tries to place geographically. Definately an East Coast bias, but they do put teams as close as they can. Any seed after 10 is fortunate to be in and their placement is a crap shoot. To reiterate, YOU CAN’T PLAY ON YOUR HOMECOURT ANYWAY.

Love UD but they have NO offense. And without Rob L. I can’t see them getting past West V. I really want them to win but they have nobody that can carry the team on the offensive end of the court. Watching the A10 tournament showed everything that is wrong with this team, cannot shoot free throws(never seen anything like it in my life),and miss at least 5 lay ups per game. If they win I will be thrilled but I cannot see defense winning alone.

Have tickets to first 2 rounds in Dayton, am excited to see the games and the fact the Flyers are in. TIVO! I am wandering who the Flyer fans will support at the Arena, and also how many fans make it to Minn. In NCAA Flyer Fans usually turn on the favorites so the games could be allot more exciting than everyone thinks! If the underdogs hussle, show Flyer type effort the crowd is yours. Flyers need to score by penetration / kickout against WV. They are rugged on defense, but can be put in foul trouble at times. It will be a good test for the young Flyers to see what is lacking. It is always best to find out under fire! Go Flyers. Next Yr- Flyers, X, Miami, WSU , Cinn. In the Dance! Yr after that They Form the NEW OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE , along with Memphis, Tennessee, WKy, Lousiville, Butler- Oh well enjoy March everyone, its a great time to watch some b-ball!

You see, the X fans have now invaded our board. Did anyone else notice a drop-off in the collective critical thinking of the board? Very articulate talking points you guys. And OSU Joe: OSU stinks. Luckily for you, you guys won’t have to play UD. You have dissed the school too much for the Arena to allow you to leave victorious. Don’t buy any tickets for the Sweet 16, that’s for sure. All I know is, we are dancing and we’re going to roll over WVU. They are going to look past us. We’re going to rip them apart like we ripped apart Marquette. The Big East is over-rated. Go Flyers!

By tds70

March 15, 2009 10:08 PM | Link to this

Hank, have to disagree a bit. WV can be beat, but Flyers will have to shoot and make foul shots because they will foul, foul, until we make some foul shots. BH knows how to coach, no matter if you like him or not. Also Big East really is 1 and 1/2 leagues. They have 8 tough teams, the rest are like everyone else. Until they, the NCAA, gets control of the dollars spent & TV the BCS conferences will rule, and not much anyone can do about it. Check coaches pay in all the conferences. In general BCS pay a bit more, have more available , TV exposure, etc etc. Its all OK, just enjoy basketball, and the good times however , and whenever they come. X fans may hate Dayton, but In March I root for the A10. Its helps everyone, even X . They just can not see the forrest through the trees. Just ignore the babble.

By Dave

March 15, 2009 10:27 PM | Link to this

WVU has wins over Pitt, Villanova, Georgetown and OSU in Columbus. They have a smothering defense and rebound like there’s no tomorrow. The Dayton game won’t be close. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them beat Kansas, but they won’t get past Pitt.

The guys have played very hard and the best is yet to come when you consider the Flyers will even be better next season… Anything the Flyers accomplish in the Tournament is a bonus.. Go Flyers and practice your free throws!!

It is the official procedure for selection: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ncaa/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/09PrinciplesandProcedures.pdf Scroll down to page two. It clearly states that the teams are selected FIRST. Then they are seeded SECOND!

I don’t care what that damn web site says about seedings. Seeds 16 up to 13 are all the lower class leagues that have won conferences. Those teams suck and are seeded higher because most of the time they get killed. Two of the 12 seeds are also automatic seeds. This year they are West Ky and North Ill. This has been the case for years. This year….The last two teams in were Arizona and Wisconsin. Next was Dayton moron. It’s easy math a*****e. Learn the system before you open you pie hole!!!

I think Bob Knight summed up the tournamaent very well on ESPN tonight. Seeds 1 through 16(top 4 in each regional) are your top team that have a real chance to get to the final 4. The last 4 seeds( 13-16) in each regional realistically are also about equal and have a low probability of winning 1 or more than 1 game. The rest of the group ( seeds 5 through 11 ) are about equal, each with some strengths and weeknesse and the most probable area for upsets, Sounds about right. He also said going to 128 field tournament would end the squabbling about being left out or unjustly left in. I am more for 80 teams, limit of 6 teams per conference and the first play -in round for 32 teams to get the last four seeds 12-16 in the field. It would make it like a lot of the league tournaments. If you put a lid on teams from a conference ,it might not be fair at first, but you would see conferences go back to 10 teams and each team would be playing a home and home against teams in their league. Probably no perfect solution. About like watching the refs in the Tennessee/Miss State game, Lost in translation!

Brian Gregory has done an incredible job with a bunch of good, but by no means great, student athletes who have earned their spot in the tournament. All of you who criicize Kurt Huelsman for not scorin and London Warren for not shooting, don’t understand the concept of playing within your strengths. Oh, by the way, I’ll probably be selling one set of session tickets in order to watch the Flyers, thanks to the NCAA. Price will be face to most fans; face plus $50 for OSU fans.

As a Flyer fan, I am thrilled they made it to “the dance”. I hope that they play tough and show they can play with the big boys!! It will be a tough game. Go Flyers!!! I can also say, that as a college basketball fan, I would like to see the A-10 do well in the tournament so I will also be rooting for Temple and X. Congrats to all the teams that made it in. Let’s see some good basketball games!!

I am amazed at the fact that UD makes it in the Big Dance and WSU does not. Wow…holy bias going on.

Why are WSU fans on this post? This is a celebration for UD fans. This year, UD made the NCAA, (money to the league and school) they are bringing around $5Million into the local economy, something the local leaders and even Barack Yo’mama can’t do. What has WSU done? Oh yeah, say they are not going to any tournament because it isn’t the NCAA and they play in a warehouse they call the Nutter Center.

I am glad to see that “Xavier Dave” knows how to cut and paste. At least they teach somehting at XU. Good luck to the Flyers, Musketeers and Owls. Let’s have a great showing from the A10 conference this year and get the nay sayers off of thier backs. I am rooting for all three.

I want nothing more than to see Dayton go far but I just don’t think they will beat West Virgina or anyone past them. Actually I don’t see Xavier ot Ohio State going far either althought it would be nice to see that. My hope are not high so I will not be let down hard.

Hey Gregory; Please leave Luke Fab in when he starts making 3’s. UD might have a chance to win then.

I like how Arizona gets in and the excuse is that even though they lost 5 of their last 6. It was their full body of work that got them in. HUH, last year UD had a way better RPI and a slightly higher sos and they got snub, And the reason was becasue they had a few bad losses at the end of the season. Talk about politics.

Huh?? Did someone mention wright state? Did they have a team this year?? Huh? Go flyers. We need to press the heck out of this team. They don’t like people pressing them. I am expecting big things from Chris Wright. He gets up for these games!!

How about a mass exodus from the Arena after the first game Friday to watch the Flyers at 3:00. Maybe many empty seats will tell the NCAA not to schedule the local team at the same time as they are hosting games.

I am a WVU fan. Congrats to Dayton for getting into the tourney - tough to do if not a BCS team. WVU can play with anyone, but they have to play the game at a very high level to win. If they take Dayton lightly they stand a very good chance to lose. If they rebound, avoid turnovers and play with intensity they should win. They are not the 3 point shooting team from the past. However, they do have a good mid-range game inside the key. Ebanks is going to be very good and is getting better and Jones is underrated. Ruoff and Butler can be inconsistent. Truck Bryant can be solid and has been lately - but has played like a freshman at times this year. Flowers and Smith have had good games and some not so good games. If the game is tightly called WVU can get into foul trouble. When they are on however, they are a very good team.

I’ve been following the team from Georgia and I read these comments regularly. I am very dissapointed in two things as I read them. First, that the flyer fans acknowledge the derogatory remarks against the team. It just makes our fans look bad (like the comments do to the fans of the teams these folks claim to represent). Second, that some of our fans don’t understand that the better the A-10 teams do in the tournament, the better it is for UD. I will be rooting for Temple and Xavier every game (unless they meet UD). I do think we were underseeded, I find it hard to understand how Minnesota was seeded higher based on their record, rpi, etc. I hope we are able to pull it together like our last regular season game and make some free throws. If we had done that all season, our record would reflect it. Rob Lowery being out is a huge blow to our chances because he did make outside shots and open up the inside more for others. As for ESPN, Doug Gotlieb has us picked to upset WV, and Greg Anthony made the comment that you can’t overlook Dayton because they are a good team. Granted, those may be the only good comments I’ve heard. Go Flyers, and remember to represent our school with class.
