Flyers get visits from highly touted pair

Dayton hosted a pair of impressive prospects last weekend as coach Brian Gregory continues to bolster his reputation for maintaining a high target list when it comes to recruiting.

Brandon Spearman of Chicago Simeon High School and Cameron Wright of Cleveland Benedictine both toured the UD campus. Spearman, a 6-3 guard, is ranked as the 71st-best prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, while the 6-5 Wright was once committed to Ohio State but reopened his recruitment when the Buckeyes reportedly pulled their scholarship offer after their interest in him waned. (Is that ethical?)

Spearman has offers from DePaul, Baylor and Iowa State. Wright has offers from Indiana and Wisconsin (UD is reportedly the only non-BCS school he’s considering).

The Flyers also are trying to arrange a visit this week from Jesse Berry, a 6-1 guard from Lafayette (Ind.) Jefferson.

UD has two commitments already — Oak Hill Academy point guard Juwan Staten and Westerville small forward Ralph Hill — and intends to sign five players.

The Flyers are believed to be looking to sign two more guards, and Spearman and Wright are at the top of their wish list.

Having the highly regarded Staten in the fold has bolstered UD’s recruiting efforts. The 5-11 Dayton native — who played in an open gym with UD players Wednesday —is ranked as the 59th-best player nationally and 15th-best point guard by Rivals.com and is rated 54th overall and 12th at his position by Scout.com.

By it's not about the kid @ OSU

I have been told that once an offer is made it has to be accepted or refused by the kid whether athletic or academic and it can’t just be pulled by the school. What do you expect from a school that buys their way into bowl games! Typical Luckeyes. Better ask that ? when your kid gets an offer.

Many schools withdraw offers just as many athletes change their commitments. Nothing is binding until the letter of intent is signed.

He was never officially given a scholarship, therefore they could take it away. Once you sign the LOI they cant take it away until the following year (ie. kentucky)

as much as i like these recruiting updates on these “other” players i would rather be kept up to date on Payne’s recruitment, where does he stand right now? has he been to the open gyms? are he and Juwan still talking everyday? as Flyer fans, players and columnists and bloggers we should all be doing our part to keep this guy home!!!!!!!! Go Flyers!!!!!!

Hey fan, A college athletic scholarship is renewable each year. Meaning you don’t get a four year ride promised to you. Each year the university has a right to renew it or not renew your scholarship.

Luckeyes??? I love how people bash OSU. When your good people bash you. When Clarett was under investigation the media was all over it. Florida has 25 players arrested and there isnt a word about it. The SEC is getting arrested left and right and the media sweeeps it under the rug and dont get me started on dUSC.

Juwan Staten is ranked 43 in the country and the 9th best point guard in the country by ESPN and Prep Spotlight.

Can the public watch any of these open practices? If so where and when?

OSU is garbage. Ask them about the 375 reported infractions that was publicized by the Columbus Dispatch. They are the epitome of unethical.

You have to feel for Cameron Wright, UD fans would embrace him in a minute and he would love playing in UD Arena. As for OSU Cheats comments those fractions are spread over more all the different sports that Ohio State offers. They offer 27 more sports to their students than UD.

Im so tired of sorry UD fans crying because they are not OSU. Good players dont want to go to UD because UD is terrible. Quit fooling yourselves. OSU’s training facility costs more than UD’s entire campus.

OSU’s training facilities could not get the Buckeyes prepared for a win at UD Arena against Siena. Quit fooling yourself.

UD has a nice tradition and I will always root for them. However, they havent made a final 4 in 50 years and the elite 8 in over 20 years. Let’s not get a head of ourselves…

Vegas, The Flyers finished second in the NCAA tournament in 1967 (32years) and won the NIT in 1968 when it was on par with the other tournament.

P.S. what do bowl games and offering more sports than UD have anything to do BASKETBALL. Sorry that Ohio State looks to the future while UD is stuck in the past

UD is a mid-major. Always has been, always will be. Where your UD shirt to (pick a state) and they will ask you “What is UD”. When you respond “University of Dayton”, they will ask whether that is a Division II or Division III school. Get a grip with reality as a mid-major.

How many NCAA tournament games has UD won in the past 25 years? Have they won as many as Davidson, or Valparaiso, or Kent State?

Dayton sucks. That goes for your declining city, your D-II Cryers basketball team, your ‘A’ baseball team. Don’t attack The Ohio State University because your Cryers don’t play at our level.

Is that why the last four games played between the two schools the score is tied 2-2. Everyone knows UD isnt on par with OSU but when Matta gets great players what does he do sit a player like Cook from DUNBAR that is doing better than any recent Buckeye and he had him on the bench

Dayton sucks. Period. End of story. That goes for your declining city, your D-II Cryers basketball team, your ‘A’ baseball team. I’ll say it again: Don’t attack THE Ohio State University because your Cryers don’t play at our level. No wonder NCR and Mead couldn’t leave Dayton fast enough!

To clarify a few things: Dayton has won 2 NCAA games in the last 25 years. And Jeff, you are readig the DDN. And this remark towards OSU’s ethics is directly related to a player the University of Dayton is recruiting. Why would Doug Harris hrandomly bring up Florida or USC??? And beyond that, does Florida or USC’s actions make what OSU does okay?
