Flyers get another preseason Top-25 rating
Dayton has been getting plenty of offseason pub because of its showing last year in the NCAA tournament and the fact that it returns 10 of its top 11 scorers from that team. CBS Sportsline has the Flyers ranked 17th in its early preseason poll, just one of many touting UD as a Top-25 team so far.

Top two returning players: Chris Wright and Marcus Johnson Top newcomer: Matt Kavanaugh Comment: The loss of Derrick Brown at Xavier has the Flyers as the pick to win the Atlantic 10. Wright should be an All-American candidate and the key to a potential 30-win season. Oh hell yea..Go Flyers!!!By Flyer Rudy

Rudy, are you retarded? Did you forget about Xavier and Cleveland State? We have won one NCAA tournament game in the last 25 years. Schools like Siena, Kent State, Detroit, and other mid-majors have done a lot better than that. Stay off the drugs Rudy.By sarah

JohnR, thanks for keeping things in perspective. We have been an average mid-major at best these past 25 years and we have been down right pathetic during the Jim O’Brien ear.By Marlin Perkins

This pre-season ranking is the kiss of death for the Flyers. I would like to believe that UD is a top 25 team but I would like to start the season out of the top 25 and prove our way in. If UD starts the season in the top 25 and stubs it’s toe in Puerto Rico it would be harder to get back the ranking and the respect. Outside of the Puerto Rico event UD doesn’t have a very impressive OOC schedule making it doubly hard to make up lost ground. I’m a realist not a naysayer just voicing my opinion.By Brian

Marlin, where do you see the Flyer’s 09-10 non conference schedule? I didn’t think it was posted yet. As for the kiss of death, I’m a pessimist too when it comes to that stuff. However, I don’t think BG will let it get to their heads at all. I think our guys are still out for blood after our bad loss in the tourny to Kansas. We still have a lot to prove.By Marlin Perkins

I have not seen anything regarding scheduling, however, the only announcement regarding a schedule addition was the Puerto Rico tourney. If there was any big time schedule additions we would have heard about it. It is a must that UD has a decent showing in Puerto Rico because it will set the tone for the OOC portion of the schedule. If UD goes down in flames in Puerto Rico, the selection committee again will look at UD’s body of work and if there are victories against Florida A&M, Deleware State, Bethune Cookman etc and not anyone from a power conference, UD is cooked. Not only will UD not be ranked, they will get a crappy seed in the NCAA tournament. It is a MUST that they show up and win some games against name opponents in Puerto Rico since they really don’t play anyone else of any consequence OOC. Remember, it will be early in the season for UD and one misstep and they are done in Puerto Rico.By Bob

Being ranked in the preseason is great for the program and will also help in recruiting. Still need to deliver during the season, but there is nothing wrong with some recognition in the offseason.By Brian

Marlin, my point is, we still dont know what our non conference schedule is going to be outside of the classic. stop being so pessimistic. with a 17 ranking preseason, it may ATTRACT other programs to play us (see Xavier playing other top 25 programs when they are ranked preseason). I think this is a good thing and there are much more positives that come from this than negatives. We havent been able to schedule any real quality teams because the quality teams have nothing to gain, too much to lose (same reason we dont play WSU). however, if were a top 25 team, they have plenty to gain. On another note, if our team doesnt find their shooting touch, then UD is figured out. if you cant hit your jumpers/if CW doesnt develop his mid-range game and the opposition has a good big man to just sit down low and wait for wright to drive, then hes done (see kansas game). I hear his shot is really improving though. cross your fingers.By Sammy The King

We will be lucky to keep Brian Gregory for another year. After that, he is going to bolt to greener pastures.
