Payne was guarded about decision on UD

Adreian Payne had known for a week that he’d eliminated Dayton from consideration, but he was pretty tight-lipped about that decision.

Jefferson High School coach Art Winston said he and his star player had whittled the list to five schools about a week ago — Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Michigan State and West Virginia, in no particular order — but they told few coaches and didn’t make the news public until contacted by the Dayton Daily News on Friday evening.

Payne had even kept his decision from close friend and longtime AAU teammate Juwan Staten, who had been trying to convince the 6-foot-10 center to join him at UD.

Asked by phone what Juwan thought of his decision, Payne said, “I haven’t told him yet.”

The reticence is probably understandable. Payne had to know how the UD community would take the news of a local talent leaving town.

“I think he likes the coaches and likes the players (at UD), but it’s just a matter of him wanting to get away and play,” Winston said.

“You never know. He’s a teenager. It’s these five schools this week. In another week, it could be (a different) five. Right now, he’s in Orlando playing in an AAU tournament. When he comes back, it might be different.”

But when asked if there was any hesitance about turning down UD, Payne said, “I’m pretty solid in my decision.”

His longtime AAU coach with the All-Ohio Red, Quinten Rogers, also was surprised to hear Payne had come up with five finalists and wanted to know who had made the list.

“The biggest thing for me was for him to go to a school where player development is vital,” Rogers said. “That’s the thing to look for in a school.”

Asked how he thought UD fared in that department, Rogers said: “I think they do well. I think they do a very good job in Dayton.

“Those (other schools) are great programs. If he feels he belongs (somewhere else) and can become a better basketball player, that’s his decision to make.”

Payne came to the conclusion that he needed to get away from the area to reach his potential as a player and person, and he said his family supported him in that.

And while the most difficult part of the decision process may be out of the way, Payne knows he still ultimately can only make one school happy.

“This really doesn’t take any pressure off,” he said.

He probably figures he’ll have to spend too much time on the bench being behind Benson, Searcy and Kavanaugh.

UD’s biggest recruiting obstacle is that the University is located in Dayton.

I just hope Payne does not get lost in one of these big programs. For his sake I hope he is ready to play on that level, because if not he could easily find himself riding pine particularly at Kansas and Kentucky.

The kid is overrated, I have seen him play many times and he doesnt impress me at all. He doesnt give it his all. You will see after 1 or 2 years at a certain school, he will be gone and lost in the mix. I have heard he is a non quailfier.

UD is better off anyways,go and get players that buy into BG’s system,he’s a 1 and gone type of kid, only thinking of himself,we don’t need him.

Man oh man, what a blow, would have been nice, but getting AP would have probably only hastened BG’s departure. I’d rather keep BG an extra two years then develop Payne 2 or 3 years. Good luck AP….. take solace Flyer fans, maybe BG decides to set up shop here, i am happy as can be having a Tom Izzo disciple.

To think UD is better off without Payne, or that he’s a “one and done” (he’s not) is only speaking sour grapes. Landing Payne would have given then a top 10-12 recruiting class. Without Payne, for 2010, the Flyers will still be very loaded. Searcy, Kavanaugh, and Benson will be the bigs, but I can’t help but think about how much Payne’s upside would have added. Go Flyers!

Payne might get lost in the shuffle at Univ. of Kentucky or the other schools but I would imagine their pay scale is tremendous. He should be able to live comfortably the rest of his life from their pay and benefits.

Good Luck to A.P. I can understand why he would want to get out of Dayton, not saying anything bad about Dayton. He’s not a one and one player, so come on down I-75 to Lexington, play a few years under Coach Caland then be a high first round pick, if not a lottery pick. It depends on how hard he wants to work. Go Cats

Dayton’s a good basketball school, but can’t compete with the likes of UK, KU and AZ (all on his list) when it comes to recruiting. Unless, however, he gets the impression that he will only ride the pine (he won’t), then he’d be better off at a school like UD. Plus UD is in the A-10 which won’t get him on national TV like the schools above. Until Dayton gets out of the A-10, they’ll never be able to recruit the elite players consistantly.

John… seriously are you a clown or what? X went to the sweet sixteen last year and the elite eight the year before that. Dayton = America’s armpit.

I wish A.P. well. What I don’t like is Winston continueing to say we! Throughout the process it’s we will visit other schools,or we have narrowed our list. It’s ok to get advice but to influence the kidd. Waht’s in it for him?

Is too bad for UD - would have been a great pickup. Is nice to hear that he has given the decision some mature thought. For some, being close to home provides a great support network of family, friends etc. For others, its a potentially destructive distraction. Seems like he thought it through. One more thought, UD’s location in Dayton is no better or worse than being in Lansing, MI; Lawrence, KS; Champaign, IL, Tucson, AZ, Syracuse, NY, Raleigh, NC, Winston-Salem, NC or many most other places where schools with successful programs are located.

Adreian Payne can play basketball .There’s Nothing wrong with UD , UD can compete with anyone in the country . Plus UD is a excellent educational school too . Jawan Staten will be a great PG . Payne would look good as a Flyer or a Buckeye .

Payne is still developing as a player. Whomever get’s him is getting a diamond in the rough! For you guy’s who feel he’s overated, BG didn’t feel that way. If Payne puts in the work, he could play for pay in the near future. Good luck Payne!

A few notes from this UD fan. I don’t think Staten is coming either and I am not sure A.P. will be a solid D1 contributor. Why do UD fans seem so intent on getting local products? Isn’t the diea to get the best players? I don;t care if they are from the north pole. Why does this matter, if Payne is the best player in his class in Dayton, but is not thought ovf very highly ( lack of consistent effort and versatility on the national scouting scene), why would UD want him. gzo get somebody better , even if the youngster is from Albequerque or Afganistan. I just don;t get why this is relevant. By the way Flyers, when Staten ends up eslewhere if you want the best player in the Dayton area, concentrate on Travis Trice from Wayne who is 10 times the player Staten (or Payne) will ever be.

Dayton is a pretty crappy city and unfortunately, UD is the armpit of that city. But I don’t care, I love the smell of stench.
