UD-UC series may still be a long way off

Cincinnati men’s basketball coach Mick Cronin hinted during a joint ESPNU interview with Dayton coach Brian Gregory that the schools are trying to work out their schedules to meet during the 2010-11 season, but Gregory said there are a few hurdles to overcome before that happens.

During a break in an AAU tournament game in Orlando earlier this week, college basketball analyst Andy Katz teasingly asked why the two Ohio neighbors aren’t renewing their rivalry. Cronin chimed in, “We’ve got a little something working behind the scenes. … It may be a year out, but we’re working on something.”

Cronin didn’t respond to an interview request by the Dayton Daily News. The schools haven’t met since splitting a pair of games about three weeks apart in 2005, and Gregory isn’t overly optimistic about hooking up with UC again.

“We call Cincinnati every year to renew the series, but I completely understand their schedule,” he said. “It’s easy to talk about games, but they left Conference USA (in 2005) and are still required to play a home-and-home series with UAB and Memphis, plus they have 18 league games and a tournament (in the Big East). A lot of things go into trying to set it up.”

Dayton probably wouldn’t be interested in a one-time meeting with the Bearcats in Cincinnati, and the Flyers haven’t lured a BCS conference team to UD Arena since thrashing nationally ranked Pittsburgh by 25 points in 2007-08.

The Flyers were 5-2 against schools from the six power conferences the last two seasons, beating Auburn, Marquette, West Virginia, Louisville and Pitt and losing to Kansas and Ohio State.

They’re expected to get two more cracks at BCS schools in the Puerto Rico Tip-off Classic in November.

“Everybody is excited for it — just to experience something new and be in a tournament like that where you play good teams,” senior center Kurt Huelsman said of the Puerto Rico trip. “You don’t want to say you’re more excited for those games because you play every game the same. But we’re excited to show the progress we’ve made and that we’re not that much different than the big teams.”

The Flyers also have road games against New Mexico and George Mason, both of which played in the NIT last season, and traditional rival Miami.

“That’s the way we want it — tough,” Hueslman said. “It’ll be a bunch of good challenges for us as a team, and we’ll see how much better we’ve gotten over the summer. You don’t come here to play easy teams.”

This would be GREAT! We could get 19 thousand at UD Arena for this…… GO FLYERS! Baby, it would be GREAT. I wanna play UC and OSU and Miami and X and Toledo and Akron and Kent St and OU and Wittenberg and Wright State and Ball State and Notre Dame and IU and IUPUI and Butler every year. Awsome baby. Fill 19425 people in UD Arena. We would rock it !!!

This was a very one sided rivalry in the past but going forward would be much more competative. Both Dayton and UC are getting better, I know I’d watch.

give it up! it will never happen. there are no BCS schools that are going to play a home-and-home series with UD. UD is still considered a mid-major.

I’d be happy if we could get a 3-for-1 deal with UC. We could get them here at the UD Arena one time and it would be well worth it.

I’d play a one time contract game at UC. Then, ask UC for a 2-for-1 deal with two games at their place. That would be fair.

I’d be……GREAT, Either your being extremely sarcastic or you ride the short bus. Anyway UD capacity is 13435

UD is now better than UC in basketball. They should be demanding nothing less than a home and home.

Sorry, UD Arena officially holds 16,455. If they get the overflow factor, it can go up to 17,120. Folks, this is UD Arena. BIG TIME COLLEGE BASKETBALL. BIG TIME. Ask any UD fan, We Are UD, and WE ARE IMPORTANT. WE ARE BIG TIME. We used to rule the NIT. RULE THE NIT!

The GMU game is being played at the Patriot Center where GMU went undefeated last year. This game will be a good one. Can’t wait until Fall.

You people need to get out more. UC played in an empty gym last year, and didn’t play very well for their elfin coach. The Dayton Flyers would RIP UC, even with the sex offender they just sold their soul for … and that’s why Cronin only wants a home game. BG won’t go for it. Get a grip, a dose of reality as well as sobriety.

Either the loser spotting off about UD’s attendance is a Wright State fan who can’t get over the fact that his sorry program can’t seem to recruit anyone or he’s an X fan that’s seen the preseason rankings. What does WSU have one recruit committed and four open spots. It’s a good thing IUPUI didn’t offer Clark or you might have missed out on that stellar athlete. As for X, uh oh, UD and Chris Wright just might dunk on you. Do me a favor and make sure Chris Mack doesn’t hit you in the face.

DanO….You sound like a frightened child, scared s**tless that UD will be destroyed by X, and it’s time to put the whole Chris Mack hit in the face thing in the dumper. Believe me, Xavier isn’t afraid of UD or their preseason ranking in any which way, form or fashion. We all know that a successful season for the Flyers hinges on whether the they can beat Xavier. Xavier’s success is measured on how far they can advance in the NCAA tournament. UD isn’t at the same level as X and it shows in the jealous overtones of your post. Keep dreaming, UD will get there someday.

Yeah, That second post is not me. Guess we know your just a sarcastic anus. UD capacity is 13435 not 13425 so you owe someone some beers cause you were wrong.

Oh, I seem to have hit a nerve with the Chris Mack comment. Does anyone else see the irony in our Xavier fans post? If little old UD isn’t a threat why bother monitoring the internet for updates on little old UD? Why bother posting comments about how you think Xavier is so dominant? Who’s scared of whom exactly? Uh oh, is little old UD getting better? Maybe little old UD will dunk on Chris Mack’s face? Hey coach Mack, you better duck because pay back is a b*tch.

Oh Touché…touché. You really got me on that one. Ah, as we can all see four years of liberal arts education at Xavier and even you can use big boy vocabulary words like “obtuse.” Oh boy, you’re just so darn witty. I sure can match wits with such an intellectual giant as you. You know what I find funny, the nickname “Hot Carl.” Did you come up with that one on your own or did the Jesuit brothers give you that moniker? Seriously, I really don’t want to know how that name came about. I mean I knew Xavier was a liberal arts school and all but come on.

Guys we need 6-7 more good years before we can approach the run that X is currently on. I really don’t think they are too worried about a program that is barely over .500 in conference for the last 4-5 years and has won only 1 NCAA tourny game since 1990. Let’s not put the cart before the horse.

The problem we have is that UC is perceived to one of the big boys and we are considered to be a mid-major. As long as we are in the A-10, we will play second fiddle to the big boys. There is no way on hell we are going to get a 1-1 deal with major programs.

UC has beaten UD 25 out of the last 27 times the two schools have met. Wright State has a lot better record against UD than UD has against UC.

Does WSU still play D-1?? I would love to see UD play some BCS teams on a nuetral court. Their schedule is atrocious!!!

Jeff, you are an idiot. Wright State has beaten your mid-major Flyers 3 times in 8 games. You are the reason that UD fans are called delusional. You can’t deal with reality.

If I’m not mistaken, the DDN published that Wright State ranked better than UD in the RPI’s for two of the past three seasons. Is that correct?

Sorry FlyerOne, you’re in for a reality check if you think that Dayton would “rip” UC. There’s a reason why UC owns the Flyers. You really need a dose of reality. You have won, what, ONE NCAA Tournament game and have been hammered 25 of the last 27 times you have played UC and you’re talking crap!?

By UD 76

August 1, 2009 6:08 PM | Link to this

You are spot on UD 96. The problem is there is nowhere else to go. BCS conferences won’t consider non-football schools anymore, so UD, and X for that matter, will always be second class. We might make the NCAA tourney once in a while, but no team from the A10 will ever make the final four.

By jeff

Xavier Dave.. First of all I’m not a UD fan. Second of all WSU should feel fortunate they still play D-1. Finally, before you call someone an idiot you may want to read their post. I was not defending UD’s schedule. In fact I think their schedule is a joke. That’s why they never advance in the tourney.
