Shooting one fundamental UD lacks

PHILADELPHIA — I was watching two Dayton players during the team’s pre-game shoot-around today finish with a series of 3-pointers from the corner, wing, top of the key, other wing and other corner. It was an exhibition you wouldn’t want to take to a basketball camp and show to kids.

The duo hit a few, missed many and eventually finished probably below 40 percent overall — and this was against no defense.

UD’s worst feature — its perimeter shooting and dearth of legitimate scorers — was exploited by a very good Temple defense. The Flyers missed shots inside, outside and everything in between in a 49-41 defeat.

They set a program record (since World War II) for fewest points in a half when they trailed at the break, 19-13.

They tied for the seventh-lowest point total overall in UD history.

They shot 26.3 percent from the field, but this was worst than watching the 22.2-percent showing against Kansas in the NCAA tournament last season. Big man Cole Aldrich was patrolling the middle then and making life miserable for the Flyers.

There was no King Kong under the basket this time. Good, hard defense, yes. But no swatting machine.

I like to see the look of disbelief from my friends when I tell them about the Flyers’ preposterous string of snug losses this season — five by 11 points to start league play — but the fact is, while a break or two could have gotten them over the hump, they just weren’t good enough to get the job done.

When they’ve got it going — like against Xavier and Charlotte at UD Arena this year or West Virginia in the NCAA tournament last season — they can play with anybody. And I don’t question their heart, desire or competitive spirit. But their lack of overall basketball skills is catching up to them this year.

I like a quote I heard often from Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel when I covered the Buckeyes: “You get as your works deserve.” The Flyers are playing to their talent level. They’re getting as their works deserve.

They’re an entertaining team with athleticism out the ying-yang, and they’re certainly capable of going on a run and winning the A-10 tournament. But the fact is they just don’t shoot well enough, or generate the consistent offense you need, to win a title in a league as good as the A-10.

They proved that against the Owls.

The team is just bad.. They need need to play the guys that are going to help them next year, they currently have no leadership. Stick a folk in them.

Doug, when are you going to start asking BG some serious questions about his strategy/game management? Trust me, UD basketball needs the DDN just as much as the DDN needs UD—so don’t worry about being booted off the charter! Kurt Huelsman is a great kid, puts forth lots of effort, but has never been an offensive player—why did BG make it an emphasis to go into Kurt tonight and have Kurt try to score?? BG had a new line-up, why take out players within the first couple of minutes before they could get into the flow or were even winded? Quite frankly, it’s not logical to “change” line ups if the players will be rotated in-and-out every 120 seconds or so. I noticed London took a mid-range shot early into the game. London has gone late into many a game before even attemping a shot—what did BG see in film that he thought LW should start trying 10 footers? For most of the season that hasn’t been part of the offense. Why tonight? We obviously had difficulty scoring. One of our best scorers, Chris Johnson, only played 23 minutes. Why? I hope you ask some questions most of us Flyer Faithful want answered. -Mike

Gregory has 3 of the 4 things a coach needs. 1) Good Role Model. 2) Good Recruiter. 3) Great Defense and Rebounding. But he lacks #4 - Offense. That is why he will stay at UD. If he had #4 he would already be at the next level.

It’s about their psyche at this point, not simply a fundamentals issue. It seems that coach has lost them… And if I see one more end-of-half or end-of-game play with RL dribbling into neverland… woah? How in the world can he keep calling that or letting that happen? He keeps looking to the bench to check with coach? That’s caused game deciding turnovers! A junior high coach would fix that!! Frustrating… but hey, the guys are trying… there’s still a chance for some redemption, so we’ll see how they do in the A-10 tourney.

When is BG going to realize that offense he has does not work. He doesn’t make adjustments,There can be no leadership because he wants to control every play, every player,Why does he have assistants if he is not going to listen, oh to tell him who has had 2 minutes and need a rest….BULL

In regards to bub above, he just said what many have been saying for a while now, only I think it may be the other way around. Gregory, may have quit on them. There is only one or two players on this team that have any basketball savvy within them. Seems like they only know alley ball or barnyard ball? You have to recruit and have at least four or five players that have basketball smarts. Dayton loss a good, smart, point guard a couple of years ago. He had less athletic ability but was a smarter player.

It’s time to stop worrying about this year’s team. They’ve given up and will get crushed in their remaining games. The travesty is that UD’s program is now staring into the abyss. Think they’re bad this year? Wait until the next two seasons. UD will be even weaker at both the PG and inside positions. Seasons with less than a dozen wins are possible. And Gregory? It’s clear the fan base already hates him, but calls for his ouster will be too loud to ignore by 2012, despite his long-term contract. It all adds up to a UD program that will be starting over (again), just as XU and the rest of the A10 are reaching higher. Prepare for it, Flyer Fans. The next two years have just become critical for the long-term health of the program, and the outlook isn’t encouraging.

You are wrong PA Flyer! How can you say that our PG play next year is going to be weaker? With Staten & Berry coming in next year and the transfer there is no way we can be worse than LW and RL! No one has to guard LW outside the free throw line and RL self destructs with turnovers at crucial times.

By PA Flyer

February 25, 2010 9:10 AM | Link to this

RL is terrible, but replacing him with two freshmen isn’t an improvement. UD isn’t a high profile program that brings in 5-star PG’s who will shine their first year. Our players, by definition, need development. And Gregory is incapable of teaching them. So yes…hard as it is to believe, we may actually get worse at PG next year.

Dayton gets worse as the year goes on not better. I sure sign of bad coaching. Gregorys sideline behavior is disturbing, to say the least. He acts like a lunatic insted of a coach. He has to be very distracting to the players. He needs to be more of a calming influence not someone who causes panic situations.

The last couple of games have been difficult to watch. Many of you are down and I don’t blame you. However, if I were an A-10 team I certainly would not want to play the Flyers in the A-10 tournament. We are as dangerous as any team.

PA Flyers obviously does not actually follow the Flyers. If he did, he would know that Staten is a top 40 recruit and a top 5 point guard. Parker, who transfered from Drake is a Junior with a very good jump shot and ball handling skills. I agree we may be weaker in the post as it will be difficult to replace Kurts strength, intellect, and defensive ability. Hopefully, Kav will continue to develop, Benson will put on weight, and Searcy will improve his defense and continue to develop his offensive skills.

Dayton plays worse as the season goes on, a sure sign of bad coaching. Gregory’s sideline behavior is horrible. His antics must be very distracting to the players. Playing requires total attention. If the players are constantly be distracted by the antics of their coach, you are going to get negative results. Yell at practice not during the game. Those are when the corrections should be addressed.

The real problem isn’t necessarily BG’s fault. Most players aren’t taught fundamental basbetball anymore. This should be the top priority of 5th and 6th grade coaches and into Jr. high. Because so much pressure is put on the win now attitude, they are not taught this. Of course, there is exceptions. Look at some of the top programs in colleges, Duke, UNC, Kanas, etc. they get athletes, but most important, smart athletes. Players that know where the ball will be two or three passes later. Sure college coaches are teachers, but they need intelligent players who will learn.

while I HATED the line up change, if you noticed we ran a double elbow stack offense the first few minutes, I was thinking HEY a new set or play..then back to the weave, we do not have the pg with o skills for the weave. Also we did not sub at the 18 minute mark he went almost to 16 minute mark..see where that got us

Scheduling cupcake teams in December pays the rent, but doesn’t prepare the Flyers to play an equally athletic team. What do you suppose UD’s shooting percentage would be if dunks were not included?

February 25, 2010 9:58 AM | Link to this

I have to agree with PA Flyer. You cannot count on freshman to play as seasoned players. It won’t happen, period. With a boat load of new faces next year, this will be a team in transition. Prediction is a maximum of 16 wins.

Plain and simple, it comes down to fundamental basketball. Since Gregory has been here, UD has always been horrendous at the foul line, unable to control the tempo of the game and very undisiplined. Yes, we occasionly play one hell of a game, but there is no consistentcy on this team or past ones during BG’s tenure. As far as top prospects, we have several on this current team. What in Gods name would make anyone think that that Brian Gregory will be able to develop and utilize prime recruits based on his past and current history? This team, under a coach such as Majerus, would be at or near the top in the A-10. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with a coach who simply is not able to teach and exploit the talent he recruits. To blame the lack of fundemantals on 6th grade coaches is absurd.

Your right TYGO, BG should be teaching lefthanded layups should be done with the left hand and righthanded lay ups should be done with the right hand. Also short jump shots from side angles about using the glass. Oh, and BG should also teach them proper ways to shoot a foul shot? Other than correcting their hand position they should already know this. The biggest pet peeve of mine is no one teaches a defensive player how to take away the base line and turn them back into the defense for help any more. Thats right TYPO the college coach should teach this, my bad

Wow! Chris Harris, I am impressed!. You are right on the mark! Or as Rocky Balboa would say; “Absolutely!” I’m impressed because you have the basket balls to say the way it really is. And the comments below your article? Dayton does have intelligent BBall fans. They’ve analyzed the coaching and the program, perfectly.

Mike R….Too bad John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins didn’t come to UD. Staten may be good but he isn’t THAT good. As I stated….the incoming freshman class won’t add much to next years team…too much of a learning curve. UD will have their hat handed to them next year.

By Mike R

Agreed. But what learning curve is there under BG’s system? The weave? I have a feeling if the kids play good “D” BG will play them…learning BG’s offesive wont take long.

We lack all fundamentals. We missed so many bunnies last night it was ridiculous. And I find myself getting mad watching the game but I have now realized they are not getting something at UD, wether it be coaching or development something is lacking. You would think over a 4 year span London warren would of put the time in to get a 15 ft jumper. Hasn’t happend. You would think over 4 years Huelsman would of learned a couple offensive moves like a hook to make up for his lack of athleticism. You would think that how bad of shooters we have that these guys would be spending HOURS after practice each day getting a 100-200 extra jumpers and free throws in but it doesn’t look like it. You would think with all the advantages of being the TOP sports program at UD that guys would be seeing this in film study everyday. But to me watching this team it appears like this is not happening. Also am I the only one who notices when I watch Duke or UNC or OSU that when there is a timeout, that all the coaches are getting together bouncing ideas off one another? I never see that from Dayton, to me I am not sure if Gregory is so protective of his decisions but it never looks like he is getting ideas or input from the assistants. I mean how bout a zone against Duquense who is worse at shooting then UD is. Also knowing that London can’t play at the end of the game cause he brings no offensive value to the team when it comes to scoring, why not develop someone like Marcus or Chris Johnson to get run some high pick and rolls instead of Londor or Lowery (who can’t handle the ball with pressure). I am totally lost with this team and something has got to give.

This flyer team is awful. Waaaay over rated to start the season and the back court of Lowery and Warren have absolutley no basketball IQ. Enjoy your 1 win over Xavier as well as the NIT… Again. Maybe the realization that this team sucks will take the obnoxious ones in UDs fan base down a peg. Finally.

I have watched U.D. basket ball for along time and i have never saw basketball if you wanna call it that like what we have right now . They have no clue to what is going to happen on the court no plays to run or anything all they do is run down the court and see if someone can throw the ball in . I have never seen a team win without discipline. They do not bring the ball in and set up a play and run it something happens to where they loose it or someone shoots a akward 3 pt shoot. We all know why Huelsman is in there so live with it .Kurt does try hard if he had had someone teachi9ng him early in his college career to take the ball to the rim he would be better but not the answer .Stop L.W and R.T especially from running as hard as they can and try getting to the basket LW goes 90 MPH to teh hoops then looks to throw to someone but is covered up R.L. thinks he has to shoot everytime he gets it .it is a shame we have good players that good be great but no coaching at all.

The last 4 games Lowery has turned the ball over in the final minute of a game. Last night he actually hit a couple of 3 pointers but then he falls down in the lane and then gets caught on the baseline. I agree with the other post, MJ or CJ should be running those high pick and rolls. Last night the guy guarding Warren just sank into the paint when he had the ball. Are you not watching film BG?

I had the misfortune of being at the game last night. I’ve also been to many exciting college BB games, including 10 final fours. Last night wasn’t one of them. To say it was a college game at all requires some imagination. The game ended as it began …UGLY, with traces of mediocrity rolled in. Sorry BG, both defenses were not tremendous. I was sitting almost as close to the court as you. When you hid your head in your hands in disguise, I continued to stare in disbelief. Temple’s Dunphy said “they had a lot of opportunities in the first half that just didn’t go. Both teams were missing the ingredient of finishing at the rim.” Guys, we know you tried, and I’m sorry that you hear and read comments. I’ll be there in AC once again rooting UD on, but don’t expect to hear our name on Selection Sunday, unless it’s that other tournament that needs to put lots of fans in the stands. We should have just blamed the poor performance on food poisoning from bad Philly cheese steaks again.
