North Carolina will be UD’s foe in final

NEW YORK — North Carolina advanced to the NIT championship game with a 68-67 overtime win over Rhode Island.

The Tar Heels (20-16) will play Dayton (24-12) for the title at 7 p.m. Thursday on ESPN.

UNC overcame a five-point deficit in the final 1:47 of regulation to force overtime. With the score tied at 59-59, Delroy James had two foul shots with 28 seconds left in regulation for Rhode Island (26-10) but missed them both.

By Who Is OSU Playing Today?

Actually, until 1975 when the NCAA expanded to 32 and allowed more than 1 team from a conference, the polls determined the National Champ. Many teams often shunnned the NCAA for NIT. Some played in both with CCNY winning both in 1950. Some lost in the NIT and still won NCAA, Utah’44 & KY’49. BTW The 1st NCAA (1939)Tournament champ was Oregon who beat OSU. Sorry Joe

50 years? First, the DDN will not be around. And if they are you will be right. But in 40 years and 30 years and 20 years and 10 years and 5 years and next year they will do the same thing. In 100 years they will still be claiming the NIT was a bigger tournament. The fact is that it never was. It was a 6 team then grew to 8-10-12-16 team tournament. It was an INVITATION, and those who rubbed each others backs were invited. It was the good ol’ boys network. It is a nice tournament to win, and when you are in any tournament you should try to win it, but it is the NIT. That stands for Not Important Tournament. I hope they beat NC, becasue they will get another NIT banner. Xavier is busy gettingg NCAA banners. Big difference. UD should want to have the success of XU, not shoot for Duke or Kansas or Kentucky or Ohio State.

So OSU Joe, let’s remember some BB history about OSU: OSU as the#2 seed did not get out of the Sweet 16 because they lost to a 6 seed; last year they flopped and lost in the first round in a “home” game at Dayton to the Siena Saints; and the year prior they played in the NIT, and won. OSU played in the NIT Joe…you have selective amnesia. You shouldn’t throw stones when you live in a glass house Joe. The most important point for any team is to play with consistency and give your best effort in whatever competition you are a part of - and the FLYERS are doing that in the NIT. Let’s see (Joe and 50 Years): Flyers beat teams from the MVC; Big East (road); Big Ten (road); SEC (neutral court); and now they face an historic power from the ACC. A “Championship” of any nature in any competition is something to be proud of. GO FLYERS.

Never ceases to amaze me how UD bashers whose teams are NOT playing in either tournament anymore just come out of the woodwork when the Flyers are doing something that your teams are not - - STILL PLAYING! Yes, UD should and will always aspire to make the Big Dance, and they will. But you play hard, and let the chips fall where they may and make the best of what you earn. And right now the Flyers have earned a shot at a very prestegous and high profile title in college basketball. And don’t think for a moment that the defending national champs, UNC, will hide the NIT trophy under the bed if they happen to win it. It will be showcased right along with their NCAA trophy from 2009. You OSU and X guys are such losers. Get a life.

Jim and BobbyG, you summed it up BEAUTIFULLY, but unfortunately, a hateful miscreant like “OSU Joe” cannot understand reason and well-stated facts. His lack of a thought process has limited him to the same lame, WEAK posts on here all season long. He never changes. OSU Joe is made of the same horrid stuff as Jeffrey Dahlmer and the Columbine killers. Decent society leaves diseases like Joe behind and alone, to marinate in their own hate until the day their death comes and makes the world a much more pleasant place.

To all the UD Haters, especially the Xavier fans that have nothing better to do, since their team dropped out of the big dance, but to come on the various DDN blogs and bad mouth & minimize the Flyer’s accomplishments thus far to end this season to remember, for both good and bad. Just remember “X” fans that the Flyers plastered your A$$ up here at UD Arena and only lost by 4 points to “X” at Cinta, then got rolyally screwed by the Refs in the A-10 Tournament. Therefore, at least for this season anyhow, the Flyers were the better team for once, both on the floor and off, which the Flyers have always been the better team off the floor. So keep on hatin all you UD Haters, especially you “X” fans, because your day of reckoning will come, hopefully at the hands of the Flyers.

Xavier doesn’t have any NCAA banners to hang, except for the ones that say “we were there.” I can hang those banners to, I went to some NCAA tournaments but never won one either, gee just like Xavier. Win something X fans then you can run your mouth.

One more thing. For those Xavier fans who either did not understand or have doubts about my comment regarding Xavier’s day of reckoning coming. All you have to do is look at past history and use the Ohio State Michigan rivalry as an example. During the 1990’s Michigan totally dominated the OSU -vs- Michigan series, until the sweater vest arrived in Columbus. Since that day, the Buckeyes have dominated the series, so it just goes to prove that “what goes around comes around”, which is what will eventually happen to Xavier. Just take a look in your own backyard “X” fans and you can see a preview of it in what has happened to UC. Granted it all started to unravel at UC right after Huggy Bear got shown the door, but the point is it still happened. The Flyers have already been through it with Jim O’Brien, but have slowly recovered during Oliver Purnell’s last few seasons at UD before leaving and most of Brian Gregory’s tenure, which I hope continues on past this season.

Wow! You guys need a life. I’m just enjoying the chance to see my old school on tv. Who cares what happened 10 or 50 years ago or what will happen in another 10 to 50 years. It’s just great to see the season extended and watch some more college basketball. I even enjoyed watching X play!

JT Flyer…..You crack me up. So much bitterness and hatred towards Xavier can mean only one thing. You and the rest of the X bashers are jealous as hell of Xavier’s basketball accomplishments over the last 20 or so years. UD’s program isn’t anywhere near Xavier’s stature; you know it, I know it and everyone else knows it. Keep the badmouthing going, it continually proves my point.

Hey Joe Pyne - It is my pleasure to entertain you with my humor. I am not bitter, nor do I hate Xavier. I have family that has attended both Xavier and UD, so hatred towards Xavier as a school is not in my heart. However, I do hate the way the Xavier players and their students act. They must not have a course at “X” on how to win and lose with class, because there are both current and past players with Xavier that do not understand the term sportsmanship and the concept of team. It is all about themselves as individual players i.e.(Tyrell Holloway). So when you say that “UD’s program isn’t anywhere near Xavier’s stature” then you are exactly right and thank god for that. UD may not have been to the big dance as much during the past 20 years as Xavier has, but at least our players conduct themselves with class and dignity.

Its funny, the folks who hate on UD from the past. 50 years from now well still have memories of UD from this week, but I’m sure nobody will remember the haters. Wah Wah Wah!

Find it really funny how ignorant OSU and x fans are about the history of college basketball. Many teams use to choose the NIT over the NCAA; until the NCAA required conference champs to go to the NCAA tournament. Even Kentucky has a bit on thie web page that debates if thier national championships of that era were true because the NIT had the better teams
