Flyers capture NIT crown

NEW YORK — Marcus Johnson scored 20 points to lead Dayton to a 79-68 win over North Carolina to capture the program’s third NIT championship.

Paul Williams added 16 points and Chris Wright and Chris Johnson 14 for the Flyers (25-12), who beat four BCS opponents on their way to the crown. They also won titles in 1962 and ‘68.

UD ended the first half with a 17-4 surge to take a 45-32 lead. UNC (21-17) cut the lead to two in the second half but could get no closer.

Congratulations Flyers. Very proud of the effort you made in this tournament. I had high hopes for the NCAA but it looks like lessons were learned. Playing hard and playing smart every night pays off. Looking forward to next year.

Too many fans gave up on these kids after so many close losses. They never gave up…a lesson for all of us. The future is bright if BG stays. Fabrisius was missing his shot in NY, but he is 10 times better on “d” then when he came in. Next year will also be special as BG’s system will work with a different group. Congrats to these players. I have been hard on Coach Gregory and the team all year long, but congrats are in order for putting together a great run in the NIT! You worked hard, gained confidence all tournament, and came away with a championship! Don’t let anyone fool you, if they can’t make the NCAA the next best thing is an NIT Championship. I am proud of you and hope next year brings bigger and better things. Huelsman and Warren played very well tonight and Marcus Johnson was the scorer he could have been his whole career. Great job and for those who say the NIT doesn’t mean anything, well it is still pretty big stuff and the Flyers are likely the last winners to ever cut the net on this tournament. Be proud Flyers of what you have accomplished. Go Flyers!

Congratulations guys. This is the team we were waiting to see all year and you showed the country during the NIT that you would have held your own throughout the NCAA by the way you played. You were so quick out on the floor, but the biggest thing is you played under control, not out of control. I know some of you will be gone and I wish you graduates all the best and thank you for your dedication to the team and your teammates. Flyers 79 Tarheels &refs 68 UD NIT 2010 champs despite targeted for 17 fouls vs NC’s 3 early in the second half> Final tally ; UD 20 fouls NC 9… That’s been the story for UD all too often. It makes this title all the sweeter to take in; they fought off such adversity & still won. That’s guts, fellas!

CONGRATULATIONS!! Throughout the NIT, UD played well and lead most of every single NIT game and, contrary to mid season games, were able to close out each close game. Love the fight, aggressiveness and confidence the team had. My hats off to the team and to all seniors! We will miss you. The Jet (he really was the heart of this team), KH (after the way Benson and Searcy were pushed around, KH showed his value to non-believers) and MJ (finally got his shot to fall after a midseason slump) showed us what they are made of. But I can’t wait for next season.

Two things: First of all, Great Win for UD!! Second: I accept your apology OSU Joe. We all know that you have some issues, and it’s good that you “come clean” even if it’s by your mom’s doing! This is the first step towards “manhood” no matter how old you are (30’s, 40’s, or 50’s). Anyhow, I’m proud of the Flyers and am glad you are too!!

Watched the run on TV and couldn’t be more proud. I don’t get much flyer news down here other than ddn stuff and have been perplexed all season long about the gregory bashing. I was in school for the last of o’brien and the first of purnell and would have loved to see this sort of talent on the floor during my time at UD. With a great new point coming in next year, things will continue to go in the right direction. GO UD! BTW—I’ve been drinking heavily since the tip and am so proud to be a Flyer—no one down here understands!

Once again… Dayton 79 North Carolina & NIT referees 68 once again, UD 17 fouls & NC only 3 during 2nd half. ANYONE who saw this game knows how in- excusable it was for the zebras to stick to one team & stroke the other! Come on, can’t we let the guys play unhindered even in the NIT?!

Great job U-D! How sweet it was to see our guys demoralize and dethrone Roy Williams and UNC, the NCAA Champs from 2009! Now let’s take this and expand our appetite for next year, and make it a goal to make the NCAA field and kick some butt in 2011! Go Flyers and go Dayton!

As I think about it, I think the greatest attribute to this team is its ability to sustain, aided by its (very) wide margin for error. They make so many mistakes…but they always come out strong, and to a man, take it to the opponent with a fierceness that is hard to match. It definitely helped during this tourney that our opponents didn’t worry about a frantic pace because they were not worried about the Flyers. Subjectively, I think a fellow mid major team would’ve recognized this team’s superior speed, and would’ve forced a slow-down by mimicking what St. Louis did to us…twice! Great win, and come back next season with a redemption and resolve to make better our shortcomings….free throws, in particular. Go Flyers!!

OSU joe, I mostly agree with what you’ve been saying all season and tonight couldn’t agree with you more. Not sure where Fredo’s from, but everyone knows that winning the NIT is better than 66 due to the automatics from poor conferences. Anyway, the only Fredo I know wasn’t smart enough to shut his mouth and ended up in the bottom of a lake (don’t mess with Michael Corleone).

I live a long way away but still get a great feeling when something good happens in the region….the best final ending to 2010 will be a BUTLER CHAMPIONSHIP in the NCAA. I will then sleep well. Hopefully - Wright State / OSU / and DAYTON will start to beat up on each other. It will be good for the region….

I’ve been very critical of the Flyers as have many others. Time to give them credit for not giving up. The helter skelter style worked well against North Carolina. You do have to wonder where Marcus Johnson and Paul Williams have been prior to the NIT. But again, congrats and to Chris Wright - Stay another year, you need to complete your game!

Great Game Flyers. I live in Charlotte now since 1989. My wife and daughter are both UNC grads. You can imagine what it was like at our house last night. You made me so proud to be a Flyer Fan. Roy Williams was graceful and really complimented the way Dayton played last night. He also acknowledged the fact that Dayton beat GT who beat UNC 3 times this year. He said he was glad they didn’t have to play other teams in the A 10. What a great night for Dayton and the A10 !!

ESPN Sportscenter this morning chose to focus its attention on NC by b’casting a post-game interview with Roy Williams. Way to go ESPN. Better to show the losing coach expressing his disappointment in his own coaching abilities than the joy of the victorious coach, the David who took down Goliath.

I agree with Jeff WSU that the ESPN coverage was bad. I’ve never seen 3 announcers (or 3 Stooges) show so much disrespect towards a contest in all my years of watching sports. To conduct an interview during the UD/Miss semi and ignore the game completely was rude. Then to build up UNC as the all-powerful and cut off the award ceremony for a pre-recorded 3 point contest was an insult. ESPN’s coverage was like they really didn’t want to be there and was a true insult to those four fine teams. It sucked!
