Wright to enter NBA draft but could still return
University of Dayton junior forward Chris Wright will announce later today that he plans to enter the NBA draft but won’t hire an agent, leaving open the possibility of returning for his senior year, the Dayton Daily News has learned.
Wright willbe holding a press conference to discuss his intentions. The 6-foot-8 Trotwood native was named first-team All-Atlantic 10 this season and helped the Flyers to an NIT championship. UD has averaged 25 wins per season during Wright’s three years.

Like a lot of young athletes, he reading and believing too many of his press clippings. However, the experts say either not draftable at this time or a high second rounder. Really should get more exterience and work on his weak points (more than one are glaring) and get his degree. I guess his family really, really needs cash now.

Chris, in life you must keep your doors open. You have done that by not hiring an agent, thereby not closing a door. We tried-and-true UD fans (not fair-weather ones like so many…the ones that boycotted or stayed home against Illinois State!) would love to see you come back and enjoy the successes of your senior season AND finish your degree. With patience brings reward, and with another year of experience, growth and recognition under your belt and a college degree, you will be set up very, very well in life.

It really doesn’t matter that he’s not ready. He, like many other underclassmen are taking into the account the possibility of NBA lockout and no draft in 2011. As a result, more (including CW) will be opting out of their senior year in order to insure that they cash in while they can. It is still good for UD to get someone into the NBA. This is good for recruiting too. Good luck CW—ready or not!

The Illinois St game was not boycotted. It was too difficult to get tickets. Season ticket holders had to purchase two games. (long shot that 2 games would be played in Dayton. Short notice as to the time of the game. Many reasons it didn’t sell out, but boycott was not 1 of them. Go UD!

Ok, time for me to speak. I am opting for the draft because I believe my body of work has shown that I have the skill set to be a high 1st rounder, possible a lottery pick. Granted, if I play my senior season and we go deep into the NCAA tournament, I would definately be a lottery pick. My decision to come back or not will depend on whether or not I think we have the team to win it all next year. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your support. CW

He needs several things in addition to a mid-range jumper - he will need a better handle, a better ‘feel’ for the game and an ability to defend on the perimeter (his footwork and his approach, read “too straight up”) is not developed for defending the 2’s and 3s he will be matching up with in the NBA. NBA/NFL athletic ability? No question. He is supremely and hyper athletic, but this needs to be channeled for him to make it to the NBA (and I believe that he can, but not at this point). He also needs to have his skills developed, and I believe that this is the biggest weakness of Coach Gregory, i.e. he does not develop his players and their skill gaps. Look at the trends - London Warren (very one dimensional and stayed that way); Marcus Johnson (regressed), Rob Lowery (neutral to regressed, although injury played a potential role); Mickey Perry (neutral); Kurt Huelsman (never developed a BASIC, signature move around the basket that would have translated to 8 points a game), At this point the UD player with the most potential for the NBA is Chris Johnson.

like many others views, his game is good, but is it NBA ready YET? remember, 2nd round picks are not guaranted $$. is he developmental league ready? Yes. physically? he can run, jump, defend, and dunk. but can he defend the big power 4s of the NBA? or shoot & defend like the 3s? not yet. Europe is an option, but another year I think helps. plus it gets him a degree. I wish him the best of luck either way. its not my decision and I don’t want to even consider what I’d do if I were in his shoes. Good luck.

CW didn’t even dominate the A-10….a mid-major conference or even the best player on his team! He wouldn’t even start on most Big conference teams. He has a ton of athletic ability, but so does everyone else in the NBA. His ball handling skills won’t even keep him in the developmental league. He needs to stay his senior year and then head to Europe because that’s where he will end up anyway….

Since the Cavs GM(Danny Fairy-tale)is stupid enough to waste their 1st round pick on a toothpick from the Congo, and also waste 20 million dollars per yr. on an “old slowed down” Shaq, perhaps there is a wiser GM out there who realizes this rare “freak of an athlete” will soon enough hone his shooting skills, and take not a chance, but take a player who will more sooner than later develop into one helluva regular ESPN highlight reel. Many NBA players can’t shoot as good a CW anyway; and that is a FACT JACK.

I agree that he will be backat UD. I disagree that Dayton has a standout freshman guard coming in. I think the kid that sat out this season after transfering might be helpful, but Staten much like the ones who are leaving. Fast, but not much else. Just being real but I don’t think CW will ever be a bigtime NBA player. I would guess his career will be in Europe. brian roberts is a vastly superior player and he can not make an NBA roster.

Is Chris Wright serious? I know by not hiring an agent that there is no harm in seeing what’s out there, but let’s be honest he’s not even the best player on the team. Chris Johnson is by far the better/most consistent of the two and has the ability to be able to play at the next level. I don’t know what CW’s draft status might be, but there’s no harm in finding out. But his career at UD has been hindered mainly by the fact that the lane he wanted to drive into was always occupied by not only the man guarding him, but KH, his man, and the guy who’s not guarding LW. With more mobile big men and at least some credible offense from the point, next year could be a much different story for a player of CW’s talents. Coming back next year might be the thing that turns him into a lottery pick…

CW choosing to stay home and play for UD and then having 3 outstanding seasons where the team averaged 25 wins has elevated the entire program. Taking this step only insure CW has all the facts to make an informed decision. Enough of the cheap shots at BG as well. The program will continue to improve and grow under his leadership. A program doesn’t evolve from a mid-major runner-up to a final four contender overnight.

I wish Chris all the luck in the world. Now, reality. The good news is he didn’t hire and agent and when he learns about where or if he’ll be drafted can come back for his senior year. Coming back for his senior year helps UD, but ultimately won’t help him unless in that year he finds a jump shot and/or learns how to beat defenders off the dribble.

The NBA has an advisory committee for those players who wish to find out where they might be drafted. Sometimes players “test the water” so to speak to find out where they stand. If Chris Wright is told that he would likely be a second round pick without the promise of a guaranteed contract, returning to school would be his best option. If he’s told that the 1st round is likely, then it’s hard to pass up a guaranteed deal.

He owes it to himself to see if he is a possible 2nd rounder. I remember everybody saying the same thing about Daquean Cook. He didnt even play in the NCAA finals and he got drafted in the 2nd round. If the experts think he is a 2nd rounder then he should go. I wouldn’t risk a knee injury for UD’s sake. We lucky to finally have NBA potential players. We will be saying the same thing about Chris Johnson next year. Good Luck in the pros

Honestly, i am not surprised Chris Wright is headed to the draft. Granted I am hoping he is back for this last season. If i was him i would enter the draft too, esp after playing on a team that could have easily made it to the sweet 16, though was jinxed by their inability to play under pressure (how many times did we lose at 5 points and under?), and b/c their beloved coach BG (and perhaps a little billie schmidt influnce) were so obsessed with subbing out their ‘deep bench’ that they never allowed any of the players to get ‘in the groove’ and really play some good ball. I am happy for Chris…saddened for UD if he does go.

Flyergal — UD was not a team that “could have easily made it to the sweet 16” — they did not make the tournament. They were not good enough through the season. UD had a great run through the NIT and should be very proud. On a related note — I wish CW well and hope that he achieves his dream of making it into the NBA!

I believe he is not ready for the NBA. He will learn a lot and improve his valu to the NBA by waiting one year. If it is money he wants he will probably get more next year to offset what he will make in two years if he goes now. I would like to see him stay at Dayton one more year.

If he can’t take over a game in the A-10, he can’t play in the league.

I wonder if he’ll get drafted ahead of London Warren? [cue crickets chirping sound effect]

Reality - per many announcers during NIT/NCAA games this past tourney, besides looking at what their record WOULD HAVE BEEN having not lost the 8 or so games by minimal points, UD was mentioned many times as a team that COULD (i guess ‘could’ should be the main word here) have made it to the sweet sixteen. With as many low seeded teams that made quite a presence this season in the big tourney - i think they could have done it. I am not here to cause any drama , like some other blog posters, so i do hear ya. BUT i do disagree - i think UD could have made it a few rounds in the tourney had their season turned out a little bit different :)

If no NBA teams wanted BRob, no way they will trust CW. Just my two cents, but Roberts was a horse!

Hopefully this is my last comment on this matter but I have to correct Rey on his comment. As i said like Rey, Cook was very heavily criticized[ especially in Columbus] for coming out early but he was a first round pick that did earn him a guaranteed one million. Derrick Brown from Chaminade was a second round pick last year out of Xavier and he did make the Charlotte Bobcats roster and made 457k-not bad at all.As I said earlier Chris will play for pay and anybody with any basketball sense knows in Gregorys scheme one player wont dominate and still have a sucessful 25 win season. The a-10 puts plenty of players in the and only few have dominated the league sans Jameer Nelson[StJoes]Camby[Umass] Odom[RIsland] to name a few, but plenty non dominating players from the a- 10 are playing or have played in the NBA.

Question: As I am hoping Chris Wright will be back at UD, could he decline an NBA offer and decide to be back for his senior year?

Question: Can Chris Wright decline an NBA offer and return to UD as a senior?

Chris Wright is doing exactly what he should be doing, not hiring an agent and testing the NBA waters. The NBA has changed, from all the teams profitable to more than half operating in RED finacially because of unrealistic player contracts and an over leveraged economy, not that many people can afford thousands of dollars a ticket even if it’s all you can eat and drink. The NBAs’ not going pay guaranteed money now unless the 1st round pick is going bring excitment and sell expensive tickets and increase TV viewership. There have been No. 1 picks that have been cut in their first and second year. In my opinion CW, now doesn’t project into a no. 1 pick that will be offered big guaranteed money. Never thought Larry Bird would become NBA winner and Hall a Framer, was a great basketball player, scorer and passer not a great athlete, just the opposite of CW. As I have commented before CW is a NBA player 10 points, 10 rebounds for 10 years. Not everybody can be guaranteed big money NBA draft pick. The positive side of this, several NBA quaranted money no. 1 picks have addmited that if could have a do over they would have stayed in college at least another year. Because they now know they lost some priceless college experiences -carefree enthusiasm, learning maturity, camaraderie and relationships with teammates and classmates that will last a lifetime. Good luck Chris Wright.

The answer to Flyer fans question is once you sign with an agent there is no turning back. thats why the league gives them a deadline to turn pro or stay in school and I believe April or May 25th is that date.

Folks, the decision is CWs to make. He will soon find out what the NBA GMs think of him; not our opinions. Good kid, great character and lets wish him well, regardless.

GutFeel, thanks for your comments. I agree completely. The A10 tourney and ILL ST games were the easiest games I have ever bought tickets for. Walked right up and got mine and other relatives’ season seats (no permission note required like in the past) and extra tix for other relatives. We did not have to pay for the second game since it didn’t happen. There was no excuse for anyone to stay away. Many fans pre-paid for their tix online and then wertfe able to swkip the first lin

Ooops! This posted itself before I finished and fixed typos. …were able to skip the first line. We were in and out in just a few minutes. RE:CW—not ready yet but at least not hiring an agent yet. We need him for next year. He needs to become more consistent to be ready for the pros.

If he stays in the draft; he will be an assistant coach for the Trotwood Rams in 4 1/2 years.

Re.”Radier Nation’s” - using Chris Wright’s decision to “test the waters” to lobby for a cross town game. Really? I enjoyed Butler’s NCAA run & thought what an opportune time for WSU to use next season’s Butler game to give away tickets & lure U “fans” into those empty green & yellow seats!

Chris Wright in the NBA??? Get real. He has about as much chance a B-Rob had of ever making the NBA. If CW is not ready for the NBA now, he’ll never be ready.

I hope that everyone who has made a comment about what Chris CAN’T do is either an NBA coach or an NBA player. It amazes me how someone can know so much about something that they have no experience with. Chris “All things are possible with God.” Don’t listen to the haters and the nay sayers. This city is full of them, nothing but crabs in a bucket who hate to see other people succeed. What God has for you is for you and don’t let anyone discourage you. Allow God to lead you. If it’s meant for you to come back to UD and complete your senior year, please don’t be discouraged by the “I told you so” I pray that you will listen to the most important voice…God’s voice. I wish you the best of luck and remember no matter which road you travel keep God first.

If Chris Wright was any good, he would not be playing at a mid-major like ud. He has no chance of playing in the NBA. Hell, he wouldn’t be able to play in the WNBA.

We all love CW. But let’s get REAL folks in Flyer Land. If he cannot take over against St Joes or St Louis and take us to Victory, he wont get drafted to play in the NBA. He disappeared many times this year in crucial situations. Someone please tell me how many games he took over at the end? I dont recall any? I have watched this team for 40 years. Ryan Perryman was better. B-Rob was a much better player. Tony Stanley was better. Chapman was a way better player. They were/are not in the NBA. CW is not even on the Top 100 on the top Draft Service . . DraftExpress.com. I am a Flyer Fan but please get real folks. CW is testing the waters and getting some exposure. Good News . .. he will be back with one more year to develop. He has the ability to build his talents and make the Pros. But he will need a different kinda year and different kinda game.
