Wright among 20 training with national team
As reported a couple of weeks ago, Dayton’s Chris Wright will be part of the USA Select Team that will train against the 2010 USA men’s national team July 19-24 in Las Vegas.
The college squad has 20 players and includes Duke’s Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith, Temple’s Lavoy Allen, Ohio State’s William Buford, Tennessee’s Scotty Hopson, Syracuse’s Scoop Jardine, Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson, Butler’s Shelvin Mack, Kansas’ Marcus Morris, Kansas State’s Jacob Pullen, Northwestern’s John Shurna, Illinois’ Mike Tisdale and North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller.
The coaches are Washington’s Lorenzo Romar and Villanova’s Jay Wright.
“We believe bringing in a USA Basketball Select Team will help the USA National Team be better prepared for the upcoming FIBA World Championship,” Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball chairman, said in a statement. “We had USA select teams comprised of young, up-and-coming NBA players train against the national team in 2007 and 2008. That proved not only beneficial for our national team, but also for the select team players who got a great training opportunity and became involved in USA Basketball’s pipeline. This will be a tremendous opportunity for these collegians to be involved in USA Basketball and to get a look at the next level.”

Does CW have a good chance at making the NBA?

Rosie, no Flyer has a good shot at making the NBA. There is a reason why there are no Flyers in the NBA… It is tough for our players to compete at that level b/c we play in a weak conference and are a mid-major. The NBA is dominated by the big schools and guys like CW get overlooked.

CW is more or less a one-trick pony. He can dunk, but everyone in the NBA can dunk so his trick ain’t good enough. He can probably play in the weak German basketball league though.

If you can’t say something nice than just say nothing. Sick of hearing from all you negative people.

Sorry Chris Wright but I know the real Chris Wright and we would never talk to anyone like that. Mind your manners.

In reply to Doug’s comments about playing nobody: North Carolina, Louisville, Pitt, Marquette, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, the Maui run, where Dayton won the tournament. All you have to do is look at the record over the years, against the BCS teams that have played us. More wins than losses.

What a great opportunity for Chris to play with this group and against these players as they prepare the FIBA. I do not think he is an NBA caliber player, but he is a class act and will have a chance to display his wares in good company during these practices. Good Luck Chris.

Doug…I really pity someone like you that has nothing better to do at 12:27 PM than bash UD and Chris Wright. My guess is that you are a bitter ex GM employee who has a hard time with anyone who might be successful. The key to CW’s success is called preparation. Perhaps if you had only prepared yourself a little better you might’ve been successful and not so bitter. Bashing someone else doesn’t make you look better, just pitiful.

Ease up folks. Doug just said that UD players get overlooked because they play at a mid-major level. I don’t see that is bashing anything. I think we can all agree that UD gets those players that have some weaknesses. And, it is much tougher to get recognized by playing at a small school.

If UD & the A-10 are just so-so as a mid-major, then why are there NBA players from other A-10 schools? Xavier has had 2 picks in 2 years. I respect CW for coming back to finish what he started at a GOOD School!! Good Luck CW, Go Flyers!!

Doug, players from mid-majors, and other teams from the A-10, get drafted and do well (from the A-10 Jameer Nelson, Delonte West, Mark West come to mind, and I am sure there are others). This year, players from (in sequence) Butler, Fresno, VCU, Nevada, and Xavier were drafted in the first round, and Marshall, Nevada, New Mexico, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky, and UTEP were drafted in the second round. There were others from BCS schools whose profile is lower than Dayton (South Florida and Baylor come to mind) that were drafted. If you have talent, the NBA will find you.

I thought BCS meant “Bowl Championship Series” and applied to college football. How does BCS apply to college basketball? Question—Is Depaul a BCS school and therefore to be feared or what?

Technically, you are correct, and BCS is a college football term. However, since the six conferences that dominate college football also dominate college basketball, the term has been used to refer to those six conferences when discussing college basketball. I suspect you already knew this, and you either have your butt up your head about technical accuracy in blog postings, like those whose arguments focus on minor misspellings or grammatical mistakes in a blog post rather than the merits of what is posted (or my inappropriate use of “since” - a reference to time - rather than “because”) or you have chosen for your name an admirably descriptive term for your congnitive abilities.

To wallyp, checkmate! BCS school (opponent)is a scam used to falsely justify a weak non-conference schedule. Schedule for your season ticket holders 4 or 5 NCAA TOP 50 teams at Home and you won’t have to hide under the BCS lie. And far as your kind comments go—-shove em.

Why can’t BG get BCS schools to come to the UD Arena? I’m getting sick and tired of hearing “next year”… I understand that being a mid-major puts us behind the 8 ball, but even WSU gets BCS schools to play them at the Nutter Center.

BG booked 4 hot BCS schools for this year: Savannah St. #309, Fla. A & M #329, Centrl Conn. #308 and Winthrop #229. At UD, BCS stands for, “Boring Colleges Scheduled”.
