The latest on Dayton coaching job

Been working the phones throughout the day and have heard from some reliable sources a few names being linked to the Dayton coaching job.

Of course, things can change from day to day, but here’s who’s being mentioned prominently as of now:

• Drexel coach Bruiser Flint: In his 10th year at the Philadelphia school, he led Drexel to a 21-10 record this season with a win at Louisville. He’s been the Colonial Athletic Association coach of the year three times. He split with VCU in the regular-season and lost to the Final Four participant in the league tourney.

He knows the Atlantic 10 terrain. A former Saint Joseph’s player, he was the UMass coach from 1996-2001 and went 86-72 (52-28 in A-10). He is 256-206 in 14 seasons overall.

• Steve Wojciechowski. The Duke associate head coach has been on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff since 1999. He was named national defensive player of the year at Duke in 1998.

• Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett. Seems a stretch, but his credentials are unquestioned. He’s had an impressive run with the Gaels, going 25-9 this season and 106-29 over the last four years, reaching the NCAA tourney twice and advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2010.

Prior to Saint Mary’s, Bennett was the top assistant at Saint Louis for two years under Lorenzo Romar from 1999-2001.

• Sedric Toney, the former Flyer star and Hall of Famer, has told UD officials he’d like to be the next coach. He’s worked in an NBA front office, but he’d have to be considered a longshot.

• There also are top assistants at big programs who are highly interested in the job, but they don’t want their names revealed because they know at this point they’re not in the primary candidate pool.

Please, if there is a God, and he’s Catholic, don’t hire Bruiser. This will send UD basketball back into the Dark Ages.

Not Flint…been there in the A-10, done that. Move on. X loses their head coach as much as we do. The difference is they have an assistant coach in waiting so the program has continuity. That is the problem we have had….start over every 5 years or so.

How in the world did I get defensive player of the year when Wayne Turner beat me like a rented mule to win the Regional Finals that year?

Steve Lavin got a raw deal (IMO) at UCLA and is looking pretty good at St. John’s. Who else fits the bill as a coach that had success and maybe got the axe prematurely at next stop? Fraschilla, Lickliter, Gottfriend, Gaudio come to mind. If Bruiser is getting looked at over those guys … you’ve GOT to be kidding me! Bennett would be an OKAY choice. But every other name on this list would be VERY disappointing to me. You mean to tell me Majerus wouldn’t jump over the Arch to come to UD?

YGBSM. I had heard Flint was going to get an interview, but thought it was a courtesy. Please, please, please, hire Bennett from St Marys, Tyndall from Morehead State, Gotfried, or Lickliter. We need a head coach who’s proven himself.

I have always thought that Doug Harris doesn’t write articles with much meat on it…. I am sure that there is alot more going on than these 4. There are several coaches that say they are interested but have not been contacted… when was the article written… I hope they have a list of “A” coaches like Ted K had. I have confidence in the selection process… there are companies who come up with recommendations — I don’t know if UD is using them or not… Goooooo Dayton Flyers….

betspin is just a tool by the ddn to create racial issues in dayton. that’s the only way this paper can remain revelent—report on a major local issue. go to ud pride, blackburn review, or other internet sites to get better insight into ud hoops. make the google your firend. those ud sites is where doug harris gets 90% of his scoops anyhow. go to those sites and get the news 24-36 hours sooner about ud hoops and don’t play into the ddn racial ploy.

Emily Katz: Add to your list John Groce of Ohio U. Excellent “coaching” background also.I like your list (though I’m not convinced any and all assistants or great players from power schools become successful coaches. For ex. I don’t know that Collins really has that much assistant coaching experience yet. Viperstick: Tyndall, the new Morehead St. coach seems locked in there right now unfortunately. Bennett is always the bridesmaid never the bride. Lost to Kent State in the first round of the NIT this year. Overall, would this be an improvement?

1st I would like to thank Doug Harris for working his hand on a topic that many are interested in seeing how it develops. 2nd I will not bash Bruiser Flint based on his past mistakes rather than his teams results because we all fall short of greatness. 3rd like many I would prefer a big name assistant because it’s proven UD for the most part is a stepping stone to a BCS conference paycheck if truth be told. I just would like the next coach to continue bringing in top local talent amongst our area (Wright, Benson, Staten) state (Roberts, M. Johnson, C. Johnson) & maybe steal a few gems from other states too (Oliver, Spearman & hopefully the Detroit studs enroute)…. Regardless I just want the new coach to sustain what BG has established in terms of being close to making the ncaa tourney year in year out & delivering road wins versus BCS conference teams…

We don’t need someone’s assistant. Believe it or not, coaching at UD is a coveted position and there are experienced head coaches out there who have proven success records who would love the job. We don’t need to be a training ground for assistants to see if they can coach. Let the assistants start out in Division II, and if they prove themselves, then UD should consider them. I agree with those who have mentioned Lickliter’s name. the coach from Oakland also sounds like a good candidate.

Duke assts. have not had good records when they’ve become head coaches. Plus, they find they have a hard time recruiting when the school isn’t Duke. Flint will set the program back. If we can’t get Grant, what about Fraschilla, Gillen, Johnson from Princeton, or Bennett. Forget Hurley, he’s not leaving the metro NYC area

I don’t care if we hire a black coach, white coach, or martian coach. Number one question in the interview should be: “Coach, other team has been playing 2-3 zone for the first half and your ‘weave’ offense isn’t working. How do you now make adjustments at halftime to overcome this difficult defense?” If the answer is: “Why, chuck up more 3’s of course”….then PASS on that coach…

We went the top assistant route last time, wasn’t impressed. I want Greg Kampe. Bruiser Flint doesn’t seem to have the chops. Kampe is on record saying he wants the job and thinks he can take UD to the Final Four. I say we give him a chance to prove it.

Greg Kampe is a used car salesman. He will have UD on probation sooner than you can say “OH MY GOD”. Please, no cheaters. No, I do not want Kampe, and no I do not want a cheater like Bruce Pearl. Brusier Flint would be a good fit.

Read up on Dambrot’s history and I think you’ll find out why he doesn’t get the gig. I think UD is very pleased with how BG worked out overall and a young up and comer assistant from a big name university is in the cards.

Jim, just did a Google search on Kampe NCAA violations, nothing popped. What did pop was that he should be on the short list of many BCS schools, and he already said he wants to come to Dayton. Don’t care if he is a “used car salesman”, I just want someone who can win.

http://www.blackburnreview.com/ Link above details possibilities mentioned; and details Duke assistants and associates. Current and past. Their success and failures. Interesting read. As for whatever reason, Dukes’ assistants do not make good coaches. Check it out. BTW, if one Googles Bruiser Flint, coach; and looks at his entire record, thus far, none of his recruited teams (UMass or Drexel) have made it to the NCAA or past the 2nd round of the NIT. Is this the best we can do? In my post above, I meant to say Collins has limited associate experience, not assistant. Wikipedia details all the possibilities mentioned, also. Stat wise. The article on Bennett is good too at the link above. Also, not that age should matter at all, but wouldnt a younger energetic person with proven success or new ideas be better as opposed to those near retirement age of @ 60-65? Maybe not. And maybe we need to ask individuals if they’re interested, not assume they are not and only look at those who say they are interested in us and start lathering. I still say throw in the name of the new OU coach too. If you think Thad Matta is a good coach that is. He has been with him since Matta’s Butler days. Hope the link proves useful.

By Bill from DC

April 2, 2011 12:30 PM | Link to this

Grant and Smart ain’t coming (oh well). Criteria: high-energy, up and comer type, preferably a younger guy looking to make his bones rather than a retread. should be (1) a low-major head coach with success, (2)high profile assistant looking for that “right” first head coach gig or (3) a proven head coach looking for his perfect “rebound” gig (like steve lavin). Candidates for (1): No to Dambrot (too old, racial issue at CMU), Groce (inconsistent in 3 yrs at OU other than some high profile flukey wins), Kampe (too old, been at Oakland since 1984 but only recently made that program into anything), Waters (he’s 59 and he’s already at his rebound gig). Candidates for (2): No to Collins and Wojo (very poor record of Duke assts at HC jobs, trouble recruiting b/c no experience selling, duke sells itself). Boals (tOSU assistant) right age (37-38) for the high profile asst category, worked his way up the ladder from D2 to robt morris to marshall to akron to tOSU, native of central Ohio, played at OU… but does he want the job? Graves (butler asst), age 35, played at butler, really wants the job, recruiting connections in IN. downside - butler is his only experience. Candidates for (3): Lickliter would be interesting since he’s from IN and has extensive experience and success at Butler. Downside - he’s 55, three of his six years at Butler were very mediocre, complete bomb at Iowa. UD could be a great fit for him as his “rebound” gig. Bruiser Flint’s Drexel program isn’t even among the upper echelon of CAA programs, he’s already proven to be a failure in the A10. Hasn’t finished higher than 4th in the CAA since 2004 (you know, when Geo Mason, VCU and ODU got good). Can a guy who got canned at UMass really be a candidate for UD? A guy who’s won 20+ games THREE times in FIFTEEN seasons? REALLY? Bruiser would be a complete disaster. What about John Capel? Can you believe he is still just 36? He was Shaka Smart before Shaka Smart was Shaka Smart. He was Anthony Grant before Anthony Grant was Anthony Grant. 9 years head coaching experience, 4 at VCU and 5 at oklahoma where he did not excel but they did make the elite 8. Joe Dooley - top Kansas assistant. Former HC at East Carolina (4 yrs), played at GW, assistant at Kansas since 2001. A different kind of rebound candidate b/c he’s an assistant now but has HC experience and top-notch assistant exp. Bottom line - look at the pedigrees of the guys you can’t get but would love to have. UD should try to hire the guy that will be the next big thing instead of hiring the former next big thing (lickliter) or the never was a big thing (flint). So stick to the first two categories and look for the NEXT big thing! Remember Billy Donovan (age 29 when hired at Florida, 2 years as a HC at Marshall), Chris Mooney (2 years as HC at Air Force), Anthony Grant (3 yrs at VCU after tutoring under Donovan), Shaka Smart (2 yrs at VCU after several asst gigs). See a pattern here? Let’s go UD!

http://www.blackburnreview.com/ Link above is interesting read and includes details several of the considerations, incl. Duke assistants, Bennett, etc. Bruiser Flints’ teams at UMass and Drexel unfortunately, thus far have not made it to the NCAA or past the 2nd round of the NIT. All of the names mentioned can be found on the I’net in detail. I still think the OU coach should be considered too if one thinks Thad Matta is a good coach as he followed Matta from his Butler days. Seems like we are writing off the Butler assistant who is interested. Many good coaches have come from there. My error above meant to say Collins has limited associate experience. Above link is a must read IMO.

Would it not be nice for the UD administration to think outside the box? What about Bruce Perle,Jeff Capel, or Pat Knight. All three are proven coaches. Perle would be on his best behavior after Tennessee, Capel has to prove that he is a good coach after his last two seasons, and Knight comes as a proven legasy. I for one would start the discussion with these three immediately. What do you think Flyer Faithful?

By Ron

Dambrot paid for his sins in full. The guy is not a racist or no one would have hired him after Central Michigan. He is probably a better coach and person for having gone through what he did. Basketball-wise he is a gem. Check his record— It is incredible. He is the only name mentioned that stands out. The rest of the ones mentioned are mediocre at best (I thought we learned from the O’Brien debacle). Bill from DC seems to have a handle on the situation (except for his thoughts on Dambrot). Living in DC has probably given him some on the city of Dayton. It is not a place anyone would necessarily want to move to. If Dambrot is interested, what are they waiting for? And Capel is a very intelligent coach. Oklahoma was not patient enough. If Curan is even thinking along the lines of Flint, UD is desperate.

Why isn’t Blaine Taylor at the forefront of the Dayton Flyer head coaching search? He has a career record of 356-178, going 215-112 with 2nd round NCAA Tourney appearances the last two seasons at Old Dominion. His wikipedia page states his annual salary at $212,160. I say we nearly triple his salary and get him as head coach of the Flyers!
