UD cuts ties with Staten, Spearman

The University of Dayton has severed ties with Juwan Staten and Brandon Spearman, a pair of promising freshmen basketball players who announced after the season they intended to transfer.

Staten has been playing in open gyms with his ex-teammates and met with new coach Archie Miller recently, leading to speculation that he might be contemplating a return to the Flyers.

When he left, his father, Bill Staten, said Juwan wanted to play at UD but just couldn’t play for coach Brian Gregory, who took the Georgia Tech job. But that door has officially closed.

“Both young men have gotten their releases from the university and are pursuing other opportunities,” UD athletic director Tim Wabler said. “Coach Miller has two open scholarships that he’s looking to fill over time.

“Coach Miller has sad what he’s doing is focusing on the team and on the two recruits in Michigan.”

Miller is on the road traveling for the first day of an open recruiting period. He didn’t entirely rule out a return by Staten during an interview Wednesday, but he said his priority was keeping the team unified and doing what he can to help his four seniors-to-be end their careers with a fulfilling season.

Staten made the Atlantic 10 all-rookie team and finished second in assists with a 5.4 average. Spearman was usually the Flyers’ top wing sub, averaging 2.5 points and playing about 11 minutes per game.

So many questions the fans want answers to…. I know quite a bit of info is privy, but… What about the coaching staff, don’t need to know who but maybe some ideas of when… what about the kids from Michigan.. don’t need details but how about — that is on the list and a visit has been made… give us a bone to chew on.. I am getting more info from Tom A.

Not surprising… but a GOOD decision! Big lesson for the Staten’s - cutting off one’s nose to spite his face. It will be an uphill climb for him at this point—which is a shame. You can bet that any coach looking to acquire Juwan will talk to Gregory first - just like people check employer references. Go UD! Fresh start! Now if we can keep the 2 new recruits, we’re in business!

Today is the first day a visit could be made. I’m guessing he either drove up last night or this morning…and you’ll know something in a day or two, or a week. Did you not read the latest article before posting?

Good, finally closure on a story that has had legs for way too long. I wish both players well and isn’ time now to get reactions from some of the returning players? Chris Johnson, for example, who seemed to be totally irritated on the court most of the last half of the season.

A coach should have say about anything the directs a team .I say keep JS and Spearman ,give them rules to abide by with Zero tolerance for misbehavior. If they cross the line they are out .Everyone deserves a second chance .This is college basketball, not a rec team .If players get a attitude about what a coach does ,sit them on the bench .Apparently BG should have did this last year but failed to control his team .A players coach he was .

Staten could have left much more gracefully, and professionally—instead, he and his father decided to say too much publicly. All coach Miller would have had to do was read the press releases, particularly those from the father. Good Talent + Bad Attitude = Bad Talent. Period. It’s clear from all angles that Juwan didn’t approach this situation with the level of maturity required. Lots of growing up to do for this kid before he can become the star that he and his father think he already is.

I would like to get this all behind us. I wish Juwan and Brandon well. BG was in an absolute no-win situation. If he had dealt with JS and BS appropriately and benched them, we fans would never have understood because all this background we have now would not have been available. He didn’t have a lot of choices and hindsight with info that was not available at the time makes the appropriate action seem so straightforward. It wasn’t! Let’s all move on. Best wishes to all involved - JS, BS, BG and the rest of the Flyers. And welcome Coach Miller. I hope you continue the UD traditions and I hope that BG comes back for Chris Wright’s graduation! That would be a very healing thing.

Good riddance. Both should as Chuck Noll, UD grad, once said “get on with their life’s work”. Like the NBA. Sure!

Who knows what really went on. Did Staten meet with Miller to ask to come back or did Miller want to ask Staten some questions? Please Mr Harris lets leave this alone unless you get some honest info. Can you get any scoops on the new assistant coaches or new recruits? That what I want to hear about…

By reading the newspaper today it stated Coach Miller was not going to make a decision on Juwan Staten until he return from Michigan. What change? The AD shouldn’t have made this decision without the coach.I agree with a previous post Juwan deserves a second chance.Do what Auburn did to Cam Newton father band Bill Staten from the building and explain to Juwan UD gave him a scholarship not his father.I have watched Juwan play basketball since he was in the second grade and he has put in the work to get to this point I just hate to see his father ruin it for him.Less be honest if Juwan was Jared Sullinger UD would take him back in a heart beat.So don’t tell me this decision can’t be overturn.

If Miller were to let Staten back on the team, his seniors would be really cheesed. Juwan is not loved in that locker room, and with Miller mentioning his seniors as a priority, then it doesn’t look good for a second bout with cancer. The first episode was bad enough.

Miller lets these Lebron wannabes back on the team, it’s curtains for UD basketball that will take years to recover. These fellas just need to take their ball back to daddy’s house and play ‘hood ball.

Juwan has made a very good decision in exiting from UD. Juwan is not just a passer! He is a scorer! If he is better than a Senior talent wise, why should he have to wait his turn and pay his dues? Did any UD fans see this him play at Thurgood or Oak Hill? Please!!!!UD needs Juwan more than Juwan needs UD!His AAU Team included Jared Sullinger, Adrian Payne and Jordan Siebert (ALL BIG TEN PLAYERS)He deserved better! A father is supposed to look out for the best interest of his son. Didn’t Brian Gregory look out for his own best interest by leaving UD and going to Georgia Tech-ACC? Juwan I look forward to seeing you play in a Major Conference soon and playing in the NCAA tourney, something you would have never done at UD!!!

Pay his dues? Juwan did not shoot very well and got tons of playing time for a player of any age, but especially for a freshman. Sure wish he had made more of those jumpers, 3’s and FT’s…he needs more practice. And he needs to learn the definition of PG—distribute to who is open, AND IT MAY NOT ALWAYS BE YOU!

I don’t wish either of these prima donna’s well. I hope Juwan dies a painful death. Same goes for Spearman. Let’s not pretend that we like these cancer like guys. We all want to see them fail. Let’s be honest here.

I’m sure Archie Miller wasn’t impressed with the lack of commitment and loyality with these two freshman. UD is better off without the ditractions. Once you take a position you can’t go back. Both these young men took a position that they both are going to have to live with. THATS LIFE!

Juwan took the 3rd most shots on the team and was the second worst shooter out of anyone that took over 100 shots this year. He shot 39% from the field and 15% from 3 pt line(Chris Wright shoots 3s better so enough said about that). Is that really the guy you want taking a lot of shots? Juwan is very talented but his offensive game is limited. His ability to get to the basket is the only reliable offensive move he has at this point. Oh and to those saying his dad is just looking out for him—— please. Gregory was dumb for letting Bill Staten have any say. The only conversation they should have had was, “I don’t discuss playing time with parents, thanks for your concern, have a nice day.” I wish Juwan well but he and UD are both better off parting regardless of how good Staten becomes in the future.

I agree with you Hank.Offensively he his shooting was lousy at best.As far as second chances goes why should UD give him anything except his released.I think now he realizes his mistakes as probably most other major colleges are saying thanks you but we don’t need you or your dad to tell us how to run our basketball program.Another kid future ruin by a overbearing parent. He would have done better to transfer mid-season and kept his mouth shut caused I see no major or mid-major offering him a scholarship and I doubt his dad can come up with the money for a year for him to be a walk-on.Even if he did I doubt he could stay quiet for that year so maybe they would take a risk on him.

Staton was obviously a bad fit for UD.Most flyer fans recognised his lack of offense, poor shooting percentage from the field and the foul line by mid season.Kevin Dillard is a better PG and Staten knew his playing time next year would be shared with KD…AND THAT IS THE NUTS “PLAYING TIME” all he cared about…As for Spearman ; he just drew the wrong roommate and the cancer spread, even though his future looked promising as shooting guard if he had been more patient…I predict those two will never be impact players on any major college team….EVER

Since Juwan and Spearman failed at a small school like UD, no big school will want them. The Staten’s should have figured that out long ago. Did they really think that a big school would be interested? Maybe, a big school will let them walk on, but there is no way they’d get a schollie.

Excuse me but Rudy whoever you are, you are a real a*s hole and you too, Harry the pony if you condone what this ignorant Rudy guy said. The Staten kid is just that he is a kid who has a father who doesn’t know how to play the game (not basketball)! And from all the blogs I have read I am 100% sure that with a father like he has he is just listening to his father, so don’t hate on the kid. He deserves a second chance, if not with the University of Dayton, some other university. Good luck Staten (son)!

Good luck to those freshman leaving the UD team.If they are good enough they might find a coach that will will give them another chance. Coaches get paid to win and at the college level you want to do it with guys you know.Coaches don’t need someone elses problems.Distractions are a waste of a coaches time. Now coach Miller has 2 more scholarships to give and knows what he wants.’New broom sweeps clean’ in the business world and this is big business, especially if you are to go at the next level.Coach Miller may be young but his backroung indicates he has been in a situation as this before….GOOOO Flyers!!

Staten wasn’t loyal to his high school so why would he be loyal to UD. Already we see Miller has more character than BG and will recruit like his brother Sean good basketball players, with good attitudes and team players. To those that think Staten will go to a big time school and be a star-no chance. The bad press generated with his leaving and his dad knowing it all will preclude that outcome. Miller probably told Staten the way it was going to be and of course he or his dad didn’t like it as he was not going to be babied so they are taking their ball and leaving. When you have cancer you have it cut out. You don’t baby it and hope it gets better. Miller was smart enough to realize that. I think Spearman is really the bigger loss and would guess he will get better offers that Staten and his dad.

Hey EXPRESSION you must be Staten’s daddy or a very ignorant basketball fan. To say Staten is a scorer…lol Let me explain this to you as I would a 4 year old. To score in basketball you better be a good shooter, particularly if you are only 6 foot tall. Staten’s inability to shoot will eliminate him from getting an opportunity to play at a higher level of college basketball. Let me make this simple for you. Staten can not shoot a basketball!

Juwan will not be missed at UD. I watched him play in middle school as well as in high school. His father has always been a distraction. His skills are not what he and his father think!
