Flyer coach, top recruit to meet

Dayton coach Archie Miller will meet with star recruit Percy Gibson in Detroit either today or Saturday, according to Gibson’s high school coach, George Ward of Detroit Southeastern.

“They’re going to sit down and maybe have a bite to eat and talk things through. I know this has been a trying time for you guys down there, but I think everything is going to work out. We’ll just have to see,” Ward said.

Gibson was ranked by the Detroit News as one of the top five players in Michigan. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward averaged 22 points and 11.5 rebounds, leading Southeastern to a runner-up finish in the Class A (big school) state tournament.

I believe this is a very important for our Dayton team. I feel good about Percy not changing his mind. We really need a big guy like Percy. I think Archie and Percy will do just fine together as well as adding good chemistry to the team. I believe the bad chemistry is now gone. Nothing but good can happen from here.

If Percy was any good, one of the big schools would have selected him.

OSU Joe, you make it sound like the player has no say in where he plays. Maybe Percy wants to play for Dayton, and maybe “big” schools would be “selecting” him all over the place if he were interested in a “big” school.

UD is a sinking ship. BG bolted. Juwan bolted. Spearman bolted. NCR bolted. Hopefully Percy can find a place where people don’t want to leave.

TO OSU JOE: ALL YEAR LONG OSU HAD BEEN LUCKY, THEN, THEY PLAYED KENTUCKY. JOE, I WOULD NOT THROW STONES AT UD WHILE YOUR FOOTBALL TEAM IS ABOUT TO LOSE ITS COACH FOR ETHICS VIOLATIONS. HOPING PERCY & LADONTE WILL DECIDE TO PLAY AT UD. GLAD UD SAID NO TO STATEN.

HEY FIFTIES FAN! No reason to yell there gramps, take it easy. OSU was lucky all year long? Losing to Kentucky showed that they were a lucky team all year? UCONN was not the best team in the country, they just wont the tourney. The tourney does not show who the best team in the country is, it’s who plays the best ball at the right time. And as for OSU, sure, Jimmy T might be gone but Urban Meyer is right around the corner, wait and see. AND STOP YELLING! MAYBE YOU NEED TO TURN UP YOUR HEARING AID so you can realize how loud (and crazy sounding) you are.

no need to slam someone who has a hearing issue - maybe it’s a sight-visual issue and he can see caps better. nevertheless, ease up. it’s just a lil’ ole sports blog.

From what I have read it was Wabler who made the decision on Staten. It would appear that Wabler was upset about Staten being a contributing factor in BG leaving. But Wablers’ days are contingent on the success of our new coach. Hard to imagine that those odds are increased in the departure of Staten. So it may be that Wabler has sealed his own fate in not letting Miller bring Staten back into the fold. If we have a terrible upcoming year then Wabler will have to take the fall for letting Staten get away. Risky move for Wabler. But maybe Wablers’ departure is as warranted as BG’s. If we have a great yaear then Wabler should be honored. Just dont think the odds are in his favor after this move. I think letting the coach make the decision would have been better for our team…and better politically for Wabler.

Why is everyone leaving UD? There is some underlying problem with the city of Dayton?

Breaking News. Juwan Staten has been seen at Georgia Tech and is going to walk on in hope of earning a scholarship. I hope this works out for JS.

I am a fan of UD and OSU. Staten situation is a classic “I think I am better than what I am” probably caused by Daddy Staten. After seeing Staten play one would conclude that, yes he takes care of the basketball and can drive and pass. With that said He can’t shoot the basketball. This is common for the UD players BG recruited. Don’t know Staten’s stats, however I do know he is a pitiful shooter and foul shooter. He will struggle to get playing time with a bigger name college team

UD will be lucky to keep a guy like Percy. He could play at a bigger name school.

I hope that BG does not take Percy Gibson with him to Georgia Tech.

If BG offers Percy Gibson to play at GT, Gibson is gone. He’d be playing against Duke, North Carolina, etc. In the A-10, the UD super bowl is Xavier. The A-10 has a bunch of high school gyms like St Joes, Fordham, St Bonaventure where only 2000 fans show up. I won’t be mad if Percy finds greener pastures since he wanted to play for BG.

If BG is able to “take” Percy Gibson to GT, then Percy isn’t worth the effort to keep him. No big man was able/allowed to develop during BG’s time at UD. Plus, Chris Wright never got any better during the Gregory era either. If I was a big man, I would never sign up to play for Gregory. And if Staten actually caused BG to decide to move on, then I think BG was definitely over his head here. He will get crushed by the GT alumni who believe GT should be a major ACC team. The number of entitled players whinning about the coach will increase significantly at Tech. If Gregory’s skin wasn’t thick enough for UD, then it will definitely not be thick enough for GT

I don’t necessarily think it was all Wabler’s decision. I truly think the returning players have given some keen insight as to what they wanted with Staten coming back. Personally, Parker and Dillard are going to do a great job at the PG position and they can both shoot better and play better D than Staten. We need the big guy Gibson if he is truly a back to the basket kind of big, this will help our PG’s and Johnson and Williams to score. The new recruits are gonna have a positive impact on our program and hopefully they will give this a chance. Yes, recruited by BG, but Dayton hoops has a lot to offer and these guys can use their ability to take it to the next level (regular NCAA bids). Hopefully, Archie can help get a better OOC schedule too. Go Flyers!

Percy Gibson signed to play under BG at UD. I am sure he’d love to play for BG at GT.

Percy or anybody for that matter would dream of playing in the ACC. That is the pinnicle of college basketball.

In comparing UD to OSU,I have yet to hear anyone mention the quality of an education one would recieve from a private university verses a state school. If a player is TRUELY a “student athelete”, it’s a no brainer chose the private school..

April 9, 2011 7:02 PM | Link to this

If you think guys are going to UD to get an education, you are kidding yourself. In D-I, players are athletes first. They all want to go to the NBA. Chris Wright is a perfect example. All athlete, no brains.

UD Dad, no UD player has made the NBA in 30 years. Do you really think UD players are so delusional that they think they can make the NBA? If they really wanted to make the NBA, then they’d go to a big school. Playing basketball at UD is like playing at Cleveland State, oh wait… Norris Cole from Cleveland State actually will play in the NBA.

THE NUTS: You should check UD’s academic ranking before you make comments like private school equals better education. I believe there are a number of public schools ranked above UD.

Flyer fans its time to stop taking about staten he is no longer a flyer. Any payer with NBA potential will not play at UD. UD is a NIT school that plays in a NIT conference. See you at the NIT next season.

…..IMHO,as a 1965 UD grad, a athlete picks a place to play that he and his family think and feel are best for him. It’s what they think not what other people think. If UD was good for them then, when coach Gregory was here, UD will be good for him now. Coach Miller and Percy will have to see how the chemistry is between them and he will probably make his decision. If Percy wants to start fresh with our new fresh coach Miller, growing and knowing together they can try and be the cornerstones to get UD to the next level, what a trip that will be for all of us….. Try to be a positive, loyal UD fan. If not ‘bag it’(forget about it)and go be a drag elsewhere. GOOO Flyers!!
